“Seek the Lord’s righteousness”
Blue jays, cardinals, robins, meadowlarks, and hawks, (and more!) are on a constant hunt for food and water. They don’t keep stores for the winter or stash emergency food supplies. Yet I rarely find birds that die of starvation… they are usually the victim of a hawk, a cat, or their own stupidity.
Flowering plants stretch upward toward light as the roots press into the soil seeking nutrients. They never worry about what shade they’ll turn or what petals to put on. They simply bloom.
There is no doubt that God designed birds and flowers to behave the way they do in order to survive. Birds and flowers do what they do without much fuss. God provided them the genetic code to thrive and provides for them externally in the form of sunlight, food, and water. At times, God employs us in that provision too!
The birds and flowers don’t worry… they just live.
What about you and me?
Do you expend all your energy on getting more than the basic necessities—trying to be more, have more, and do more?
How would you compare that with the energy you spend working for the Lord and attending to the needs of His kingdom? Would you separate the two?
Is your work only for yourself or do you hope to glorify God in your job?
Are your efforts to clothe and feed your family merely motivated by fear that they will be looked down on if they aren’t tall enough, happy enough, or stylish enough?
How often are my efforts selfishly motivated and not glorifying the Lord?
To seek His kingdom and His righteousness involves dragging each thought and each motive before the mirror of His word and adjusting them for His glory and His purposes.
Every day, O Lord, help us to remember to seek You, Your kingdom, and Your righteousness.
“Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’
or ‘What shall we drink?’
or ‘What shall we wear?’
For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Matthew 6:31-33 (ESV)
