“Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” John 14:27 (NIV)
The Christian’s response in times of war should be fivefold:
Pray earnestly. “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness” 1 Timothy 2:1-2. In addition, “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven” Matthew 5:44.
Pursue peace. “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone” Romans 12:18. Peace starts with you and me. We must do whatever it takes, in the power of the Holy Spirit, to bring about peace. It starts in the home and works out from there. Pursue peace with your spouse, your family, your children, your neighbor, your colleagues at work, and so on. As the church goes – so goes the world.
Put away fear. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God” John 14:1. Jesus Christ is the “King of kings and Lord of lords” Revelation 17:14. He is in control, He can be counted on, He knows what He’s doing, and He’s looking after you and me. David says, “The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid? . . . Though an army besieges me, my heart will not fear; though war breaks out against me, even then will I be confident” Psalm 27:1, 3.
Point others to Christ. The world is looking for peace but often looks in the wrong places. Peace is found in a person, in one person, in the Lord Jesus Christ. “No God – no peace; know God – know peace” Anonymous. Peace will rule the day when Christ rules the heart. In times of war Christians have a wonderful opportunity to talk to others about the Prince of Peace and how He guides “our feet into the path of peace” Luke 1:79.
Press on. There will be permanent peace when Jesus Christ returns. “He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore” Isaiah 2:4. So press on. “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called” and do so “until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which God will bring about in his own time” 1 Timothy 6:12, 14-15.

12 As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her.
13 When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”
14 Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”
15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
16 They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.”
17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.

Jungfru Marias födelse
Helgon: Jungfru Marias födelse
Marias födelse firas som “frälsningens gryning” (jfr kollektbönen) sedan 51 600-talet av den bysantinska och romerska liturgin. Den har sitt ursprung i Jerusalem, som strax före år 500 fick en Marie födelses kyrka (senare kallad S:ta Annas kyrka).
Dagens bön:
Välsigna, Herre, dina tjänare, och skänk oss fredens gåva när vi firar den saliga Jungfruns födelse, då räddningen för hela världen dagades.
Läsningar: Mik 5:2-4, Ps 13, Matt 1:18-23
Första läsningen
Mik 5:2–4
(Tiden skall komma då hon som skall föda har fött)
Läsning ur profeten Mikas bok.
Så säger Herren: Du Bet–Lehem Efrata, som är så ringa för att vara bland Judas släkter, av dig skall åt mig utgå en som skall bli en furste i Israel, en vilkens härkomst tillhör förgångna åldrar, forntidens dagar. Därför skall de prisgivas intill den tid då hon som skall föda har fött. Då skall återstoden av hans bröder få vända tillbaka till Israels barn. Och han skall träda fram och vakta sin hjord i Herrens kraft, i Herrens, sin Guds, namns höghet. Och den skall ha ro, ty han skall då vara stor intill jordens ändar.
Så lyder Herrens ord.

Abraham var far till Isak, Isak till Jakob, Jakob till Juda och hans bröder, Juda till Peres och Sera, vilkas mor var Tamar, Peres till Hesron, Hesron till Ram, Ram till Amminadav, Amminadav till Nahshon, Nahshon till Salma, Salma till Boas, vars mor var Rahav, Boas till Oved, vars mor var Rut, Oved till Ishai och Ishai till David, konungen.
David var far till Salomo, vars mor var Urias hustru, Salomo till Rehabeam, Rehabeam till Avia, Avia till Asa, Asa till Josafat, Josafat till Joram, Joram till Ussia, Ussia till Jotam, Jotam till Ahas, Ahas till Hiskia, Hiskia till Manasse, Manasse till Amon, Amon till Josia och Josia till Jojakin och hans bröder, vid den tid då folket fördes bort till Babylon.
Efter bortförandet till Babylon blev Jojakin far till Shealtiel, Shealtiel till Serubbabel, Serubbabel till Avihud, Avihud till Eljakim, Eljakim till Asor, Asor till Sadok, Sadok till Akim, Akim till Elihud, Elihud till Elasar, Elasar till Mattan, Mattan till Jakob och Jakob till Josef, Marias man; av henne föddes Jesus som kallas Kristus.
Med Jesu Kristi födelse förhöll det sig så: hans mor, Maria, hade blivit trolovad med Josef, men innan de hade börjat leva tillsammans, visade det sig att hon var havande genom helig ande. Hennes man Josef, som var rättfärdig och inte ville dra vanära över henne, tänkte då skilja sig från henne i tysthet. Men när han hade beslutat sig för det, uppenbarade sig Herrens ängel för honom i en dröm och sade: »Josef, Davids son, var inte rädd för att föra hem Maria som hustru, ty barnet i henne har blivit till genom helig ande. Hon skall föda en son, och du skall ge honom namnet Jesus, ty han skall frälsa sitt folk från deras synder.« Allt detta skedde för att det som Herren hade sagt genom profeten skulle uppfyllas: Jungfrun skall bli havande och föda en son, och man skall ge honom namnet Immanuel (det betyder: Gud med oss).
Så lyder Herrens evangelium.
