Is it possible to be content with our spouse and yet want them to be more godly?

A question while I’m overseas: Is it possible to be content with our spouse and yet want them to be more godly?

Are the two contradictory and are both possible?

I think so.

As a Christian, we should be godly and content with our spouses.

But we are to desire people to grow and change.

Spouses should be content with their spouse on the on one hand in the sense of loving their spouse As a person.  Do you love the actual person who has a heart, a mind, a soul, and body?

If you are married you should ask do you love your spouse and not just the idea of a spouse you imagine as best for you?

Yet if we really love someone we want what’s best for the person.  And that should include changes for their benefit and the glory of God.

But if we think we love someone but in actuality it is for our selfishness, we show affection then we won’t be content at all with the other spouse.  The symptoms would be an annoyance.  Also, there will be bitterness.  And we would be controlling.

How do you tell you truly love someone for who they are, and yet hope they change?

Do you love the person still, even if they don’t change right away, or even if they don’t ever change this side of eternity?

God is the perfect example of balancing both.

His love for us never changes in one sense it is not based on what we do to earn it.  That is the gospel.  Our justification is constantly the same.  But there is also sanctification!
