Mothers

MAY 6, 2022

Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving youExodus 20:12 (NIV)

This is for mothers.

For working moms, stay at home moms, single moms, married moms, divorced moms. For mothers with money and mothers without.

For mothers who’ve struggled with morning sickness and a painful labor.

For mothers who’ve sat up through the night with sick toddlers in their arms, changing diapers, cleaning up vomit, and saying, “It’s okay sweetie, Mommy’s here.”

For mothers who lock themselves in the bathroom when they don’t know why the baby is crying, and don’t know how to stop the crying.

This is for mothers who know all about sleep deprivation, preparing formula, and putting up with the smell of diarrhea.

For the mother with the ability to nurse a baby, cook dinner, and listen attentively to her husband, all at the same time.

For mothers who show up at work with spittle in their hair, milk stains on their blouse, and a soother in their purse.

For mothers who wake up with a jolt. For mothers who go from sleep to dread, from bed to crib at 3:00 a.m. to put their hand on the chest of a sleeping child.

This is for mothers at the end of their tether . . . who want to swat their two-year-old when he stamps his feet and demands ice cream for dinner.

This is for mothers who watch a son or daughter disappear into school, alone, for the very first time.

This is for mothers who, after hearing about a child that drowned, have a desperate need to seek out their own child, to hold and hug.

This is for mothers who read a favorite bedtime story. Then read it again when a sleepy voice says, “Please Mommy, just one more time.”

This is for mothers who taught their daughters to tie their shoelaces before they started school. Who taught their sons to say please and thank you. Who taught their children responsibility and respect.

This is for mothers who run car pools, make cookies, and tidy toy chests.

This is for mothers whose heads turn automatically when a little voice calls, “Mom?” in a crowd. Even when they know their own children are at home.

This is for mothers who sit on cold bleachers, cheering at sports events, so that when their child says, “Did you see what happened when . . . ?” They can say, “Yes, I saw it. Wasn’t that great?”

This is for mothers who sat down with their children and helped them learn right from wrong. Who modelled integrity and honesty. Who guarded their lips and watched their ways.

This is for mothers who grind their teeth when their seventeen-year-old gets a tattoo.

For mothers who teach their sons to cook and their daughters to sink a jump shot.

This is for mothers whose children have gone astray. Who can’t find the words or actions to reach out and restore their offspring.

This is for mothers who pick up clothes.

This is for mothers who chew their nails. Who spend time with daughters struggling to grow up. Who understand when it’s time for sons to go their own way.

This is for mothers who cry. Who cry when they’re happy and cry when they’re sad. Who cry just because . . .

This is for mothers who are going deaf. Who keep saying, “Will you turn that music down?”

This is for mothers with an empty nest. With quiet homes, with everything in place.

This is for mothers everywhere.

But it’s especially for mothers who find time to read their Bible and pray. For mothers who try to walk in the Way. For mothers who strive to follow Jesus every day.

This is for you.

For without you our children would flounder, our homes would crumble, and society would fall.

Thank you for being the best mom you can be.

Growing in Faith

Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

James 1:4

Today’s Scripture & Insight:

James 1:2–4

At the beginning of my gardening journey, I’d wake up early and run to my vegetable garden to see if anything had sprouted. Nothing. After an internet search for “fast garden growth,” I learned that the seedling stage is the most important phase of a plant’s lifespan. Knowing now that this process couldn’t be rushed, I came to appreciate the strength of small sprouts fighting their way through the soil toward the sun and their resilience to temperamental weather. After waiting patiently for a few weeks, I was finally greeted by bursts of green sprouts creeping through the soil.

Sometimes it’s easy to praise the victories and triumphs in our lives without similarly acknowledging that growth in our character often comes through time and struggle. James instructs us to “consider it pure joy” when we “face trials of many kinds” (James 1:2). But what could possibly be delightful about trials?

God will sometimes allow us to go through challenges and hardships so that we can be molded into who He’s called us to be. He waits in anticipation for us to come out of the trials of life “mature and complete, not lacking anything” (v. 4). By staying grounded in Jesus, we can persevere through any challenge, growing stronger and ultimately allowing the fruit of the Spirit to blossom in our lives (Galatians 5:22–23). His wisdom gives us the nourishment we need to truly flourish each and every day (John 15:5).

Reflect & Pray

What trials have you been working through recently? What lessons are these circumstances revealing to you?

Dear heavenly Father, sometimes the trials I face seem unbearable. Please give me the strength to persevere, and help me as I grow in faith and develop into the fruit-bearing believer that You’ve called me to be.

PRAYERS FOR UKRAINE

Posted on April 28, 2022 by atimetoshare.me

Peace is not the absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means.
Ronald Reagan

I cannot begin to imagine what the Ukrainians are dealing with in their country. The United States seems oblivious to the wars that rage around us and seem eager to send money and arms, but not really providing any kind of peace for those going through the battle. We have our own battleground right here in the USA as crime spins out of control and it seems that the devil is having a field day. Our urgency to overcome two years of isolation has caused depression, thoughts of suicide and mental issues. That in itself is a war of sorts. Children are killing other children for no reason. The family has been torn apart. Our basic rights have been put into question. We see a battle for wealth, status, and fame every single day. However, our battles could easily be won if we return to Your ways. We must begin to care about each other again.

We’re all in a spiritual battle. Some feel they can control their circumstances by themselves. Some try finding solace in a bottle or the drug of the day. Some escape to the internet as a means of forgetting about the world and all its troubles. When we put on the armor of God, we can stand firm in any battle we encounter.

Dear, Father, God,

You have shown us that your love for us is beyond our comprehension. You loved us so much, you gave the ultimate sacrifice for us. We can now stand firm in the knowledge that you will be at our side as we face the evils of this world. I pray for the people of Ukraine. They are displaced, fearful for their lives and long for a return to normalcy. When placed in such circumstances, we grow weak in our faith. Help us and those being ravaged by war put on the armor you provide to protect us all. May your Spirit fill the hearts of those who are losing heart. May you enliven all of us to care for one another – to love – to grieve for – to show compassion to – to depend on you to lead everyone in the right path. Help them and us to stand firm in our faith and call on you in every trouble. We often wait until there is no other choice available to us, but you are with us all the time. You have promised to protect us through the trials of life.

Thank you for sending Jesus to take our place on the battlefield raging within us. Help us to return to you and know that you have already planned a solution for all wars and rumors of them. I put my trust in you to deliver the people of Ukraine from the ravages of war. Keep all of us strong in our faith. Hear the prayers of your people, dear God. In Jesus holy name I pray. Amen!

What Are You Thinking?

Philippians 2:5 KJB, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:”

This tells us that we are to have the mind of Christ. His way of thinking should always be our standard. When we think like Jesus, it will keep us safe from the enemy’s wicked schemes. Because the enemy is always trying to tempt us and leads us away from the will of God.

By operating in the mind of Christ, we will walk in wisdom. We will also walk in love and kindness toward others. This verse reminds me of that popular acronym from some years ago, WWJD (What Would Jesus Do?). It does not hurt to ask ourselves this question so we can make sure our thinking is in sync with His. When we think like Jesus, we will act like Jesus, and our lives will bring Him glory.

Hebrews: Just Jesus

POSTED ON APRIL 11, 2022 BY BETH ANDREWS

History is littered with men and women quitting before the victory. Do you remember any of their names? Neither do I. We remember the ones who stuck it out and stayed the course.  The whole premise of the book of Hebrews is about not giving up; a message twenty-first-century believers need as much as first-century believers. The author said, “So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded” (10:35). That begs a question: Do you have confidence in God? I hear your “Yes!” ringing loudly through the air. So let me press you a little farther. Confidence for what? That He will fix your problems, clean up your messes, open all the right doors, straighten out your kid, and bring world peace? There’s nothing wrong with any of those things; I’m praying for some of them myself. But the author had bigger things in mind. Eternal things.

The people reading this message were being challenged by the writer to put their confidence in one thing: the grace of God through Jesus Christ for eternal life. Remember these folks are largely Jews and for centuries their confidence was in obedience to the Mosaic Law. Something tangible. Something they could do. It was a constant mantra from the cradle to the grave. But they were now expected to believe that one man bore the burden for all of their sins and there was nothing they needed to do to ensure their salvation beyond trust.  Put yourself in their sandals – you only get one shot to make the right decision about the hereafter. How difficult would it be to stake your eternal security on this – on Him?  But this is what the writer was encouraging – even pleading with them to do. It’s what I am encouraging – even pleading with you to do.

You and I can believe in God for many good things. My hope for my life is in His Word and His Name. You place your kids and your future, your struggles and heartaches, and your needs and desires in His hands and you do well to do so. But the one question that you need to answer Beloved is this: What is your hope for eternal life? If your confidence is in anything or anyone but Jesus, you have no hope and no reward. Only Jesus saves.

Proverbs 3:7-8 | Fear of the lord, Proverbs, Proverbs 3

Establish BALANCE for Optimal Health

by Bill Rudge

Luke 2:52 tells us that “Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.” He developed a balanced life. As believers, we, too, should live a balanced life. God cares about our total well-being.

Physically, our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit and should be “living sacrifices”—totally committed to the Lord in every aspect for His honor and glory. Mentally, we are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds—thinking about and dwelling on that which is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely and praiseworthy. Emotionally, we must not allow negative and destructive feelings such as worry, fear, jealousy, bitterness, hate, revenge, greed, impatience and pride to dominate our lives. Instead, they must be replaced with the fruit of the Spirit, which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Spiritually, we are created in God’s image and are to be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ, filled with and walking in the Spirit.

…May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Thessalonians 5:23).

The most important principle of health is to “Fear [reverence] the LORD and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your body and refreshment to your bones” (Proverbs 3:7, 8). Seek Him daily—preferably first thing in the morning. Find wisdom and strength for your day and your life in His Word and by His Spirit.

Do Not Neglect the Physical

Many Christians believe that exercise is of little value. They base their opinion, in part, on the words of the Apostle Paul to Timothy, “For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come” (1 Timothy 4:8). When I was a new Christian and thought I would have to give up working out after reading 1 Timothy 4:8, a wise minister said to me, “The little that physical exercise does profit is very important, and not to be neglected.” Exercise is like tires on a car—small in comparison to the rest of the vehicle, but crucially important.

From the age of 12 (1965) when I was in the seventh grade, I have been involved in some type of exercise regimen (except for the brief period just mentioned). My current fitness routine often begins at about 5:30 a.m., and after Bible study and prayer, I work out for 30 to 60 minutes, four to six days a week. I also get exercise from outside work at the ministry center, as well as pushing grandchildren around in wheelbarrows or pulling them in wagons on “adventures” through “secret” trails in nearby fields and woods.

Bodily exercise and nutrition have temporal profit and are not to be neglected, but knowing Jesus Christ and His Word have eternal benefits! Paul counseled Timothy that godliness promises benefits for this present life and for the life to come; so I spend the majority of my time (approximately 40 – 60 hours a week) in Bible study, prayer, and ministry, and a minority of my time (about 4 – 6 hours a week) exercising and working out. The simple biblical principle that has proven to be of immense value in bringing balance to me is: “Focus on the spiritual while not neglecting the physical.” Since my priority has been making certain my “soul prospers,” the Lord has blessed me in many ways and given me abounding energy to accomplish the vision He placed in my heart. My prosperity is not in material wealth, but in His peace and joy that transcend life’s circumstances.

A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones (Proverbs 14:30). A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones (Proverbs 17:22).

Like an athlete preparing for his next contest, I discipline myself and am constantly training (exercising, eating nutritionally, fasting, praying, studying Scripture, and so on) to be a more effective witness for Christ, to better handle the daily stresses of life, to be able to fulfill an oftentimes rigorous ministry schedule, to be prepared for the rigors of my next mission adventure and to participate in physical activities with my grandchildren. My goal is to have the health and vitality to fulfill God’s purpose and finish the race He has called me to run.

You Have a Choice

Since the psalmist declared, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your workmanship is marvelous and how well I know it” (Psalm 139:14), why are so many Christians sick and not walking in health? In many cases it is because we violate biblical principles: we lack self-control; have poor health habits; neglect proper exercise and sleep; have unresolved stress issues; overwork or are lazy; expose ourselves to dangerous chemicals, pollutants, or too much sun. We allow negative emotions such as jealousy, anger, and bitterness to dominate our lives. Time is the great equalizer; one day we will pay for our poor choices. Just remember, the farther you walk down the road of bad health habits, the longer the walk back towards better health.

Romans chapter 14 and other Scriptures make it clear that we have the freedom to eat whatever we want without endangering our relationship with Jesus Christ or our eternal destiny. Nevertheless, wisdom, spread throughout the pages of the Bible, reveals the importance of avoiding gluttony and other destructive indulgences. The choices we make and the things we do impact the length and quality of our lives:

  • How do you handle relationships, financial and job stress?

    • What foods do you consume?

    • Are you exposed to environmental pollutants?

    • Do you exercise or not?

    • What is your decision on the use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs?

    • Do you engage in immoral behavior?

    • Do you allow anger, bitterness, despair, and feelings of hopelessness to rule your thoughts and emotions, or do you choose to love, forgiveness, peace, and joy?

The fallout from these choices accumulates over time and determines the kind of life you will live, and even when and how you will die.

Considering the toxicity of our bodies, minds, and spirits, the fact that we live in relatively good health for as long as we do is a testimony of how wonderfully we are made.

Optimum health is dependent on each person’s circumstances. It is taking whatever your situation and limitations are and seeking, with God’s help, to improve wherever you can. Some of you may have irreversible injuries or genetic disabilities to deal with. However, we still can choose to trust and honor God and seek, as far as possible, to implement His biblical health principles.

Greater Health through Biblical Principles

From personal experience and studying health and fitness for decades, I am convinced that Scripture contains superior principles for obtaining maximal physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and the pages of our Bible divulge the ultimate way to gain health in this life, as well as the next! As believers in Christ, we await the blessed hope of the transformation of our physical bodies at the Lord’s return (Romans 8:18-25; 1 Corinthians 15:35-57; Philippians 3:20-21).

Do not settle for imitation or inferior health and healing techniques that could compromise your biblical convictions or seduce you from pure devotion to Christ. Instead, walk in harmony with, and in obedience to, God’s natural health laws and biblical principles. You will achieve your inherent optimal health, living a better quality of life with increased energy to accomplish His will and be a more effective witness for Jesus Christ! When the world sees how your faith in Christ positively affects every dimension of your life, many will want to know the Christ you represent.

Remember, “Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). As stewards of the amazing bodies, minds, and spirits God has given us, we are responsible to establish balance by seeking to be physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually fit!

“Don’t be a Fool”

He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.

Proverbs 10:18

It is a sad and hurtful thing to find out that someone has been pretending to be your friend, and then discover by their actions, ways, and words, that they were really your enemy all along. The Bible calls this kind of pretenders FOOLS. They are always found out, sooner or later, and then everyone knows they are fools. Even the people who are listening to their lying lips and slander know they are fools.

The next time someone pretends to be your friend and you discover that they really aren’t, remember that they aren’t “playing you for a fool.” They are merely showing everyone around them that they are in fact, just another fool. Don’t be caught being a fool. That’s reserved for folks like some politicians, who are only pretending and flattering with lying lips while they actually don’t really care for you us at all.

Learning Contentment: Scripture Writing Plan May 2022

April 30, 2022Elihu

True contentment is a thing as active as agriculture. It is the power of getting out of any situation all that there is in it. It is arduous and it is rare.

G.K. Chesterton

Contentment is not inherited, it is learned. Most people discover—at a very young age—that they cannot have everything they want, but that doesn’t stop them from wanting everything they cannot have. Some wiser people have also found out that getting their desires didn’t necessarily satisfy them; often it left them craving more.

When the Israelites were traveling in the desert after their glorious exodus from Egypt, they immediately started complaining about how much better life was back in Egypt (where, by the way they had been miserable slaves). During their journey, God provided manna and water and made it so their clothing and shoes never wore out. But the manna wasn’t “good enough.” The quail was boring. The desert was hot. The journey was taking too long. The promised land had great fruit but scary people.

Nothing was ever “enough” for them.

How are you and I any different?

Let’s say you’re fortunate enough to own a home. Maybe you worked for years earning the down payment and you have dreamed of this home forever. When you finally move in to this “dream home,” what happens?

“I don’t like this color.”

“I want new furniture.”

“This layout isn’t as good as I thought it would be.”

“The neighbors are too loud.”

Almost immediately, what you’ve got isn’t enough… again.

It’s not just material possessions that have the potential to cause us discontent. It happens in relationships, status, location, and more. Single people want to be married. Married people want friends. Parents want some alone time. The lonely want less alone time. This place is to crowded. This place is too lonely.

We are constantly seeking “the next big thing.”

So how do we learn contentment?

First, as a child of God, it is vital to deepen our relationship with God. I guarantee you, He has done more for you than you might recognize. The older I get, the more I see how often He has blessed my family in ways I didn’t understand until much later. The Lord is always present and faithful, always providing our basic spiritual and physical needs (not our endless wants). When we dwell on who He is and all He does, it becomes clearer that He is all we truly need–and that is when we learn contentment.

Second, we have to recognize that this life will never be “enough.” This seems contradictory on the surface, but consider: because this life is temporary and this world is NOT our permanent home, we have an innate longing for the eternal. We attempt to satisfy this longing with earthly stuff—power, possessions, pleasure—only to find out that they leave us empty and dissatisfied. Once we recognize how fleeting it all is, we are free to stop chasing these passing pleasures to pursue lasting joy.

Third, accept that this will be a “continuing education course.” As long as you and I live in this world, we are going to live through some challenging situations. Maybe you cannot find a spouse or have been recently widowed; maybe you can’t have children or maybe you have children with disabilities; maybe you are in a miserable job or school or other life situation. Such things definitely breed discontentment! Paul wrote to the Philippians, “I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4.11-13). Contentment is learned, and because the circumstances of life are constantly in flux, we will be adjusting and learning throughout all the seasons of life.

This month, we will write through Scriptures on contentment. I would love for you to share your insights as you write through these passages. You can comment on this page or on the Elihu’s Corner Facebook page or Instagram account (@elihuscorner).

Reading: Psalm 73:21-28

When my heart was grieved
and my spirit embittered,
I was senseless and ignorant;
I was a brute beast before you.
Yet I am always with you;
you hold me by my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will take me into glory.
Whom have I in heaven but you?
And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever.
Those who are far from you will perish;
you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.
But as for me, it is good to be near God.
I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge;
I will tell of all your deeds

Reflection
I love the brutal honesty of the psalmist. I always like to think I am the smartest one in the room, but the truth is I am very capable of wrong-headed thinking. And wrong thinking often leads to hurtful words or unwise actions. Take a moment to consider the psalmist’s confession: When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.

That’s brutal honesty. Are we that honest with God when our reasoning goes off the straight and narrow rails? Or do we justify our thoughts and blame God or others when we are ticked off?

We need to come into God’s sanctuary to have our hearts and minds tuned into the LORD’s thinking. The LORD reminds us that He knows the big picture. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:9).

When we are in God’s presence, we can have our affections adjusted. All too often I have my priorities all messed up. What about you? The amazing truth about God is He loves us despite our mess-ups. The psalmist knows the power of that love. Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.

What a patient, loving God we serve! This should become our humble confession: Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Response: LORD God, I want to have your perspective. I want to see as you see. Set my thoughts on the right path. Remind me to take time to be with you. But as for me, it is good to be near God. Amen.

Your Turn: How do you get your affections in tune with God? What steps do you need to take?
