Reading: Psalm 81:1-9

For the director of music. According to gittith. Of Asaph
.

Sing for joy to God our strength;
shout aloud to the God of Jacob!
Begin the music, strike the timbrel,
play the melodious harp and lyre.
Sound the ram’s horn at the New Moon,
and when the moon is full, on the day of our festival;
this is a decree for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob.
When God went out against Egypt,
he established it as a statute for Joseph.
I heard an unknown voice say:
“I removed the burden from their shoulders;
their hands were set free from the basket.
In your distress you called and I rescued you,
I answered you out of a thundercloud;
I tested you at the waters of Meribah.
Hear me, my people, and I will warn you—
if you would only listen to me, Israel!
You shall have no foreign god among you;
you shall not worship any god other than me

Reflection
Psalm 81 begins with a call for God’s people to celebrate: Sing for joy to God our strength; shout aloud to the God of Jacob! Begin the music, strike the timbrel, play the melodious harp and lyre.

Why should we break forth in music and song? Well, we have a good reason to celebrate. We have been set free from our burdens. Because of the victory of Christ, we have been set free from slavery to sin. The psalmist expresses this thought with these words: I heard an unknown voice say: “I removed the burden from their shoulders; their hands were set free from the basket. In your distress you called and I rescued you.”

Who is that unknown voice? That unknown voice belongs to the LORD. He is the One who set the people free from bondage in Egypt. God went out against Egypt. He opposed the most powerful nation of the world at that time and claimed a people for Himself by rescuing them from the hand of Pharaoh.

Our heavenly Father has done the same for us. At the cost of his life, Jesus redeemed us from bondage to sin and Satan and he brought us into his Kingdom. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1:13-14). We have plenty of reasons to celebrate and break forth into music and song. Let nothing hold you back. The joy of the Lord is our strength.

Response: LORD God, I thank You for rescuing me from a life of sin and futility. I praise You for redeeming me, Lord Jesus. I rejoice in Your continual goodness. Your mercies are new every morning. Amen.

Your Turn: Do you find it difficult or easy to break into song as you think of the Lord’s love for you?
Take some time to worship the Lord today.

He will cover you with his feathers... (Psalm 91:4, NIV)

Hidden in God

Play hide-and-seek with a two-year-old and chances are when it’s your turn to do the seeking, you won’t be looking for long. Their understanding of true concealment is limited.

Some people play hide-and-seek in life. They’re looking for places to hide from such situations as financial ruin, hurtful relationships, and danger. But their understanding of true concealment is limited.

They may build up a hefty bank account, move from one relationship to another when the first difficulty arises, and purchase every means of protection against physical harm.

But these hiding places still leave a person exposed. Not all problems can be solved with money. Shallow relationships don’t satisfy in the long term, and physical protection can fail.

Just as our granddaughter in the first picture needed something bigger to cover her, we need something bigger than bank accounts, a few casual friends, and state-of-the-art alarm systems to cover us.

In addition, we face a number of monumental problems in America that leave all of us greatly exposed: rising drug addiction, increased violent crime, failing schools, the demise of Judeo-Christian values, inflation, supply chain failures, the national debt, and more.

There is only one place where we’re completely hidden and protected: in God himself.

Not that we’re shielded from every difficulty in this life. God hasn’t promised to prevent all trouble. But he is the One who can provide complete coverage no matter what we face, including the security of eternal life and blessings in the midst of trouble.

When God is our Hiding Place, he makes available to us his:

  • Strength

When tumult rages,

We have in him a strong citadel of calm.

–Herman  Lockyer (1)

  • Peace

The very act of breathing in his presence [is] balm.

Jan Karon (2)

  • Help

Be assured, if you walk with Him and look to Him

and expect help from Him, He will never fail you.

–George Mueller

  • Truth, including his unfailing promises

The roots of stability come from being grounded in God’s Word.

–Unknown

  • Hope

God has given no pledge that he will not redeem

And encouraged no hope that he will not fulfill.

–Charles Spurgeon

Rest assured, my friends, once we’ve placed our faith in Jesus Christ, we are completely covered—hidden in God. He is our steadfast and reliable Rock of refuge (Psalm 31:3).

*     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *

I praise you, O God, for sheltering me in the Rock-cave of your refuge. I’m surrounded by your unfailing love and compassion, your all-sufficiency in all situations, and your empowering presence.

I also take refuge in the truth of your Word that affirms you will put all things right when the time is right. In the meantime, I nestle into the protective shadow of your wings.

(Psalm 32:10b; Psalm 116:5; Philippians 4:1; Psalm 23:4; Romans 8:28; Psalm 17:8b)

The Path to Power

MAY 19, 2022

the path to power

To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

2 Corinthians 12:7-10  (NIV)

As with a number of spiritual truths, there’s a paradox in the above text. The path to power isn’t through growing stronger, it’s through growing weaker.

That’s hard to swallow, isn’t it? Living in a self-centered and self-indulgent culture folk struggle with the idea that the power of God is shown most fully in human weakness. For the world teaches us to never give up and never give in. We’re told to dig deep, to look for the resources within ourselves. Self-help books talk about realizing your potential, self-actualization, finding synergy, and discovering your inner strengths. It’s all about success, never about surrender – all about overcoming, never about yielding. So when folk has been taught that power comes from grasping every opportunity that comes their way, they find it most disturbing to hear that the way up is actually down, that we win by being defeated, and that we conquer only when we submit.

It’s not just the world that has the wrong understanding of power. Christians seem to have some strange ideas as well. There’s the perception that all you have to do is pray and then God will act on your behalf and heal you from any sickness, trial, or struggle in your life. “Just name it and claim it,” some will say. But most of the time, God doesn’t work that way. God usually makes His children into walking wonders of patience, wisdom, love, and helpfulness despite the sickness, trial, or struggle in their life.

Paul’s “thorn in the flesh” is an excellent example. He had some kind of painful personal disability that tormented him. Maybe it was a problem with his eyes (cf. Galatians 4:14-15). Whatever it was, it caused him considerable anxiety. So much so, that he pleaded three times with the Lord to take it away. But God didn’t heal Paul. Not because of a lack of prayer on Paul’s behalf. The text indicates that Paul prayed three times for God to remove the thorn in his flesh. Nor was it because of a lack of sovereign power on the Lord’s behalf. We know that God isn’t limited in any way (cf. Job 11:7). He heals every disease and sickness he chooses to heal. No, the reason God didn’t heal Paul’s thorn in the flesh is that He had something better for Paul.

Now that may be hard to understand. You may be saying to yourself, “What could be better than having a painful disability healed?” Paul may well have asked himself the same question because God provides the answer. In 2 Corinthians 12:8, He says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

Stop and think about what you’ve just read. Isn’t this God’s way of saying, “Paul, I know you want me to heal the thorn in your flesh but I’m not going to do that. I’m going to go one better. I’m going to display my power in your continuing weakness in such a way that the things you fear like the loss of your ministry, credibility, or usefulness, will not occur. The thorn in your flesh will make it more obvious than ever before that I am the One who gives you strength. Through your weakness I will be exalted, all honor and glory will be mine.”

You may be struggling with some thorn in the flesh right now. Maybe there’s a financial struggle, maybe you have an ongoing problem with your health, maybe you’re going through a painful time in a relationship, maybe you’re battling with some form of mental illness, or maybe you’re mourning the loss of a loved one. Whatever it is, here’s the reality: God’s “power is made perfect in weakness.” The Lord has allowed the thorn in your flesh for your personal blessing and the enriching of your ministry because He knows you’re better off with it than without it.

The film, A Beautiful Mind, is based on the true story of John Forbes Nash. In 1958 Nash was described as “the most promising young mathematician in the world.” But, being a brilliant mathematician isn’t a guarantee against mental illness. Nash contracted paranoid schizophrenia. Even after receiving shock treatment, he spent three decades struggling with delusional states of mind. Day in and day out he had to live with the imaginary invading his reality. However, with the help of his dedicated wife Alicia, Nash embraced his weakness and managed to hold down a job at Princeton and go on to win the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize in Economic Science for his work on Game Theory.

Now I don’t know whether Nash is a Christian, yet his story does illustrate how success doesn’t necessarily come through growing stronger, but through growing weaker.

To pursue the path to power you must begin with a recognition of your weaknesses. Paul identified the thorn in his flesh. You need to say to yourself, “What’s the thorn in my flesh? What’s my weakness?” Then, having identified the “thorn” you need to cry out as Paul cried out. You need to say, “Lord, I can’t handle this. Lord, please take this away from me.” At this point, one of two things will happen: The Lord will either remove your burden and use some other weakness through which to make His power perfect, or He’ll say something like, “I’m not going to take it away. I’m going to use your weakness to display my power. I will strengthen you to handle it. Your ‘thorn’ is going to point other people to me.” This is when the power of God is unleashed. If you accept your weakness, if for Christ’s sake you “delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties” (2 Corinthians 12:10), then Christ’s power will rest on you (cf. 2 Corinthians 12:9).

Don’t be cavalier about this. The path to power is a narrow one. Pride gets in the way. Few experience the power of God because few are prepared to admit their weaknesses and submit to Christ’s enabling, through the Holy Spirit, to keep on keeping on.

This may be a staggering revelation for some Christians. Some believers have come to believe that God’s power is easy to possess. They never equate it with weakness. They’ll tell you that it comes along when you get saved. Others think that all you have to do is ask for the baptism in the Holy Spirit and then you’ll be able to draw on God’s power whenever you want it. But that’s not entirely true. J. I. Packer says in his book, Rediscovering Holiness, “God does not give us His power as a possession of our own, a resource to use at our discretion. It should not be necessary to say that, but the amount of talk today about using the power of God shows that this misconception is common. God uses us, calling into play the powers He has given us, as channels through which His own power flows. We are not storage units like batteries, or receptacles like buckets, in which the potential for power in action can be kept until needed. And we do not use God’s power, as we use electricity, switching it on or off as we like.”

Yes, it’s only when we are weak that we are strong (cf. 2 Corinthians 12:10). It’s only when we admit that our natural strength and fortitude are insufficient that God pours out the sufficiency of His grace. It’s only when we keep on in situations where what is being asked for seems beyond our ability or endurance, that we are strong. And it’s in the day to day struggle to overcome pride, to be patient, to go the extra mile, to hold steadfast under pressure, to love our enemies, to be positive when we’d rather be negative, or to get up after a failure, that God’s power is manifested in our lives.

There you have it. The way to become stronger is to grow weaker. The path to power is to refuse to rely on your position, your education, your abilities, your connections, your personality, your good health, your bank balance, etc. The path to power begins when you accept the obstacles, accidents, oversights, obtrusions, afflictions, and obstructions of the day as God’s way of making you acknowledge your weaknesses and dependency on Him. So do that today. Choose to live in humble dependence on God and His Word. Accept the thorn in your flesh. And recognize that it’s only when you’re weak that you’ll be strong, and it’s only when you yield that God gives you the power to overcome.

WHERE DO YOU BELONG?

Posted on April 29, 2022 by Pastor Randy

The longing to belong is one of the most basic human emotions! I know there are those we call hermits who cut themselves off from all human contact. They achieve this by building a stone wall around that desire to belong to keep it under control. But this does not negate that most basic desire: the longing to belong! So, let me ask you this morning, “Where do YOU belong?” The answer lies in our true identity. And this is where all the chaos and problems begin.

Some think their identity is found in who they want to have sex with. No, this Preacher man isn’t afraid to talk about sex. Others think their identity is found in those who think just like them. Still, others think their identity is found with those who have the same fashion taste as they do. Still, others think their identity is found with those whose societal norms have declared they are the “in” group. Still, others think their identity is found with those who have the same political views. Still, others think their identity is found in those who like to do the things they like to do. Still, others think. . .get my point?

But what if I told you that the longing to belong isn’t in any of these types of things? It’s the truth, whether you believe me or not. Remember that the longing to belong is the one of, if not the most basic human need. Where does it come from? Glad you asked! It comes from The One who created us–God! God the Father! God the Son! God the Holy Spirit! Why do I say this? Because of all that God created only one thing bears His Image–and that’s us Human Beings! Not the trees, not the skies, not the stars, not the fish or any other critter. It’s Us Human Beings!

And why is this truth so important? (And it is very IMPORTANT!) God created us for intimate friendship and fellowship with Him and all the other Image Bearers! But with the introduction of sin (thanks, Adam and Eve!), that friendship and fellowship were broken. But don’t despair! God did something about that sin. He didn’t change His mind about sin! Au contraire, my friend. In fact, He showed us how damaging and destructive Sin is when His Son, Jesus, died on that Roman Cross. And through our faith in His act of grace-filled love, the disease of sin is taken out of us!

And we BELONG to God, Our Creator, Father, Savior, and Sustainer! Now some want to say that it’s love–love is what makes us holy! Whoa! Wait for a second buckeroo! It isn’t love that makes us holy. It’s Holiness that makes us Love! And holiness is clearly defined by the Bible, not the so-called experts on the Bible. Holiness is more than what we do and don’t do. Holiness is the lifelong transformation back into our original image. And don’t think for a nano-second that means you have to give up your individuality. God doesn’t use a cookie-cutter–that’s what Churchians and Tenured Pew Sitters do.

No, God made you uniquely YOU! Within this human form, there’s no way any one of us can fully express God’s Glorious Image! So God gives His Image Bearers (at conception, I might add!) each a uniquely personal way to reveal His Glory. But if we let other things tell us where we belong–well–we just end up angry, bitter, and hateful. More than this, we end up empty. So don’t worry if others tell you that you don’t belong! After all, they didn’t create you. You belong to God who is working to bring HIS glory out in you!

Love God with all your heart. Love others the way Jesus loves you. And make sure all the glory goes to Him!

And I leave you with this song:

“Eternal security – is it biblical?” 5/24/2022 Posted by www.gotquestions.org

Once Saved Always Saved - Fact or Fiction?

Eternal security – is it biblical?

ANSWER

When people come to know Christ as their Savior, they are brought into a relationship with God that guarantees their eternal security. Jude 24 declares, “To Him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy.” God’s power is able to keep the believer from falling. It is up to Him, not us, to present us before His glorious presence. Our eternal security is a result of God keeping us, not us maintaining our own salvation.

The Lord Jesus Christ proclaimed, “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand” (John 10:28-29b). Both Jesus and the Father have us firmly grasped in their hand. Who could possibly separate us from the grip of both the Father and the Son?

Ephesians 4:30 tells us that believers are “sealed for the day of redemption.” If believers did not have eternal security, the sealing could not truly be unto the day of redemption, but only to the day of sinning, apostasy, or disbelief. John 3:15-16 tells us that whoever believes in Jesus Christ will “have eternal life.” If a person were to be promised eternal life, but then have it taken away, it was never “eternal” to begin with. If eternal security is not true, the promises of eternal life in the Bible would be in error.

The most powerful argument for eternal security is Romans 8:38-39, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Our eternal security is based on God’s love for those whom He has redeemed. Our eternal security is purchased by Christ, promised by the Father, and sealed by the Holy Spirit.

The Fruit Sells the Tree

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Galatians 5:22–23

Today’s Scripture & Insight:

Galatians 5:22–26

A nursery owner set out to sell peach trees. She considered various approaches. Should she line up leafy saplings in burlap sacks in a beautiful display? Should she create a colorful catalog picturing peach trees in various seasons of growth? At last, she realized what really sells a peach tree. It’s the peach it produces sweet-smelling, deep orange, and fuzzy-skinned. The best way to sell a peach tree is to pluck a ripe peach, cut it open until the juice dribbles down your arm, and hand a slice to a customer. When they taste the fruit, they want the tree.

God reveals Himself in a wrapper of spiritual fruit in His followers: love, joy, peace, forbearance (patience), kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23). When believers in Jesus exhibit such fruit, others will want that fruit as well, and, therefore, will seek the Source of the fruit that’s so attractive.

Fruit is the external result of an internal relationship—the influence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Fruit is the dressing that beckons others to know the God we represent. Like the bright peaches standing out against the green leaves of a tree, the fruit of the Spirit announces to a starving world, “Here is food! Here is life! Come and find a way out of exhaustion and discouragement. Come and meet God!”

By:  Elisa Morgan

Reflect & Pray

What first drew you to Jesus? How are you exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit in your life so that others are attracted to its Source, God?

Holy Spirit, I welcome You to continue to grow Your fruit in my life that others might see You and want You in their lives.

Learn more about walking by the Spirit.

SUNDAY SANCTUARY

Posted on May 15, 2022 by atimetoshare.me

Where is your sanctuary? Is it hidden in nature like the one pictured? Is it a beautiful landscape overlooking a magnificent sunrise? Maybe you find shelter and safety in the inside of a large cathedral with all the trappings of Solomon’s Temple? It could be a simple country church with benches for pews and a wooden cross on the altar. Wherever you receive comfort, peace and solitude, you are within a shelter. When God is there with you, you are in His sanctuary.

At the end of a busy week, after all the chores of Saturday have left you spent, it just seems logical to spend Sunday in thanksgiving and praise to the Creator of the universe. Yet, when we grow old, our eyes may be failing us and the light from the stain glass windows can cause distraction and even a migraine headache – when your ears are growing less effective, and words become mumbles – when your aging is getting in the way of your worship, you often have to make do with online services. The fact of the matter is God’s sanctuary isn’t always found in a building. When you allow Him into your heart, you become a sanctuary in a way.

I love the fellowship time of corporal worship. You can share some of the burdens people are struggling through and perhaps encourage or be encouraged as well. We need to interact with each other. A church is a place where sinners gather to praise, thank and learn about God. It’s also a place of encouragement for all of us. When I can’t attend, I feel something is missing. Still the Spirit of God remains with each of His children. He never leaves us.

Wherever you are today, take time to praise God for your life. Thank Him for all His blessings. Study His Word. Trust that He is with you all the time.

Living in God’s Goodness

MAY 2, 2022 ~ DAWN

Psalm 27:13  I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.

The words, I remain confident” are an inspiration to keep walking in confidence regardless of the circumstances we are facing. The Psalmist chose to remain confident. Remaining confident in God’s goodness is a daily choice that we must make. His goodness is there even in the toughest of times because He has promised to work all things together for our good when we love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28)

God wants good things for His children, and He even promised us that His goodness and mercy would follow us all the days of our lives (Psalm 23:6).

When we are tempted to question God’s goodness, prayerfully, we will remember that although we may not understand the details of what we are going through, we will find comfort and peace in His promise to bring goodness into our lives here on Earth. His love for us endures forever (Psalm 136:1).

Real-Life Wisdom

Posted on April 28, 2022 by Beth Andrews

What do we do with the failures of our past? Now that we have survived some of the trials and struggles of life, now that we have lived through the results of our own mistakes, now that we have found that sowing wild oats doesn’t bring much of a harvest—what do we do with all that hard-earned wisdom?  Paul offers the best advice: “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).  We reach back and help someone else who is struggling in the same manner.  Why is AA so powerful? Because it is built on experience and a shared struggle.  It is one person who has found freedom from addiction walking alongside someone who is trying to break free. The best counselors (either formal or informal) are the one who have “been there, done that, and have the T-shirt to prove it.”

I have a lifetime of experience with the consequences of my own foolishness. But I also have a lifetime of experience with God’s faithfulness and mercy. The Lord has rescued me many, many times and now I am able to offer a hand up and a bit of wisdom and encouragement to someone else in the same kind of pit.  When God rescues us and we in turn lead others to Him for freedom, we have turned the devil’s handiwork against him.  We can say with Joseph, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives” (Genesis 50:20).

Dear friends, this is how we redeem our foolish past—we take our experiences, our failures, and our sins to the table and say to another struggling soul, “I know where you are, I understand what you’re feeling and I will take you to the One who rescued me. I will walk the whole way with you until you are free.”  Beloved, don’t let the enemy bury you in shame.  Let God use you and your scars to turn mistakes into ministry and heartbreak into hope.

Know God

Agree with God, and be at peace.

Job 22:21

In order to properly “agree with God, and be at peace,” we must know Him as He has revealed Himself, not only in the unity of His essence and subsistence, but also in the plurality of His persons. God said, “Let us make man in our image”1—man must not be content until he knows something of the “us” from whom his being was derived.

Endeavor to know the Father. Approach Him in deep repentance, and confess that you are not worthy to be called His son; receive the kiss of His love; let the ring that is the token of His eternal faithfulness be on your finger; sit at His table and let your heart rejoice in His grace.

Then press forward and seek to know much of the Son of God who although He is the brightness of His Father’s glory humbled Himself and became man for our sakes. Know Him in the singular complexity of His nature: eternal God, and yet suffering, finite man; follow Him as He walks the waters with the tread of deity, and as He sits down at the well tired in the weariness of humanity. Do not be satisfied unless you know much of Jesus Christ as your Friend, your Brother, your Husband, your all.

Do not forget the Holy Spirit. Endeavor to obtain a clear view of His nature and character, His attributes, and His works. Behold the Spirit of the Lord, who first of all moved upon chaos and brought forth order, who now visits the chaos of your soul and creates the order of holiness. Behold Him as the Lord and giver of spiritual life, the Illuminator, the Instructor, the Comforter, and the Sanctifier. Behold Him as He descends upon the head of Jesus, and then as He rests upon you.

Such an intelligent, scriptural, and experiential belief in the Trinity is yours if you truly know God; and such knowledge brings peace indeed.
