Ephesians 6:1-2… Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: (NKJV)
Today’s writing follows yesterday’s writing about suggesting that parents think about limiting the use of cell phones and iPods in the hands of their younger children; to prevent the addiction (that I have personally witnessed) that these electronic devices bring into the lives of young kids today…
I have seen first-hand, where these electronic devices cause division and strife between the children and their parents… The playing of these multitudes of video games may seem like an easy way out for the parents to keep their children busy… But studies have shown that video games can lead to an addiction to playing these games, much like drugs or alcohol; and sometimes, even added aggression in real life, because of the violence found in many of these games… One study suggested never placing video gaming equipment in the child’s bedroom…setting reasonable limits on the amount of time these games are played…and monitoring the content of every game your child plays, as well as what is being viewed on the TV and the internet… Here is a link to one of these studies, for those parents that are interested in learning more about this subject… http://www.pamf.org/preteen/parents/videogames.html
The opening scripture is the only commandment given to us by God, which includes the family (The 4th Commandment…Exodus 20:12)… But the apostle Paul goes on, to help guide the parents, in…Ephesians 6:4… And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord. (NKJV)
The Bible teaches that Christian fathers (and mothers), are not to force unreasonable demands or restrictions on their children, which will lead to anger, or despair and resentment… Yes, the parents must discipline their children…but it should be done in a loving manner, which will bring respect to the commands of the Lord… Children should be taught right from wrong, based on biblical principles taught in the Bible… Whatever God teaches His children in the Bible, will surely be the right approach for Christian parents to use on their own children…
Moses, when he went over the 10 Commandments with the Israelites a second time, wrote this in…Deuteronomy 5:16… ‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may be well with you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you.’ (NKJV)
I have seen the results of how the corrective instruction to young children, done in a loving manner by a parent who knows, understands, and uses what God teaches us in the Bible…really makes a big difference in how the children understand and respond to the parent’s corrective teaching… It’s not about using physical violence to instruct a child; though the Bible is clear that at certain times it is appropriate…Proverbs 13:24…He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him promptly. (NKJV) … (Other scripture speaking about chastening our children can be found in…Hebrews 12:5-11)…
I found this web site, that gave a clear suggestion of exactly what age mild spanking should be used to discipline young children; and what should be done to correct a younger disobedient child, before using a spanking as a last resort… It also gave the do’s and don’ts for parents, in regards to ages, and what was considered appropriate and not recommended in correcting a young child… I’m 64, and I found this article to be both interesting and informative… http://www.tldm.org/news6/child.discipline.htm
If we are Christians; correcting our children in a manner that God would deem appropriate, is but one more reason all Christians should be spending time reading God’s Word, the Bible… If we don’t know ourselves, how we are to live in a way that will please the Lord…how can we teach our children properly, to “bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.”
Heavenly Father, I pray that spending time in Your Word each and every day, would become an indispensable part of each Christian’s life… I pray Lord, that You would convict all of the hearts of those children You know as Christian’s…with the desire to open and read Your Word every day; and to help them find the time in their busy schedules to be sure and be fed by Your Word, with the knowledge and wisdom that Christ told us we needed, in…Luke 4:4… I pray Lord, that this daily spiritual feeding of wisdom from Your Word, would become part of all of our lives…in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…
