Those verses say, “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
Doing death with people who are not strong Christians can be exceedingly difficult, nearly as difficult as “doing life” with them. Ha! Yes, I went there. I said it. Life is hard sometimes, and I simply have no comfort to offer, no reassurance to give, and no encouragement to provide, without first bringing Jesus into the picture.
I can tell you Jesus loves you or I can make your coffee. Personally, I think coffee IS a clear sign that Jesus loves us, but without Him, I’m just left offering the universal comfort of some boiled bean water. Gosh, I’m sorry you lost your job, your wife left you, and your kid died. Here, have some boiled bean water.
It just feels so empty to me.
We’re having a funeral today and those words are on my mind, “Therefore we do not lose heart.…we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
Those of us in Christ know the weight of glory and that all the things of life (and death) that give us so much grief are but passing afflictions. What is unseen is eternal. Fix your eyes on Christ.
