Hebrews 4:1… Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. (NKJV)
Entering God’s “rest” in the Old Testament (or not entering it), had to do with a rebellious group of Israelites that wandered in the wilderness for 40 years, because of their disobedience to God… Only Caleb and Joshua from an entire generation of Israelites, who had been freed from slavery in Egypt, were finally allowed to enter the “promised land” of Canaan… Psalm 95 in the O.T. talks about this rebellion… Here is a link from Wikipedia.org…which gives an account of this rebellion by the disobedient generation of Israelites… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caleb
The writer of the Book of Hebrews goes on in the next verse, to give us the way for an un-repentant sinner today, bound for hell…to enter God’s rest…Hebrews 4:2-3b… For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. 3 For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said: “So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest,’” (NKJV)
Becoming a Christian in God’s eyes, takes more that just believing God exists… And it takes more than doing self-righteous works in the name of the Lord; as Jesus warns us won’t get us past those pearly white gates of heaven, in…Matthew 7:21-23… And it even takes more than hearing the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ…which is the gospel preached in this scripture from Hebrews…
Becoming a Christian takes saving faith in Jesus Christ, that requires a heart change that can’t possibly occur until after an un-repentant sinner realizes they can in no way save themselves… They must come to Christ with a repentant heart, asking for help to change their lives; as they turn from their sins, and through saving faith alone, seek Jesus Christ as their personal Lord, their Master, and their Savior… This is known as obeying the gospel of Jesus Christ… Only then, will sinners with saving faith in Jesus Christ be forgiven of a lifetime of sins…and graced with the free gift of salvation by God…Ephesians 2:8-9…
Jesus tells us about this rest that only He can provide, in…Matthew 11:29… Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (NKJV) …Anyone expecting to enter heaven must first go through Jesus Christ…John 14:6… Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (NKJV)
Understanding and obeying the gospel of our Lord Christ, is the only way to find “life”… And this “life” is eternal life in heaven with God…as one of His children, and a Christian in God’s eyes…
Heavenly Father, I pray that Your Word cuts right to the very soul of those that You do not yet know as a Christian (Hebrews 4:12-13)… I pray Father, that You would draw all of these un-repentant sinners to Yourself (John 6:44)…and that with regenerated hearts, they would obey the gospel of Your Son Jesus Christ… I thank You Father, for Your promise to all believers; that when they will become one of Your children, they will have a room in Your mansion when they die (John 14:2-3)… I pray that this life changing experience will occur for all of us…in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…
