“Time to Clean House”
“So clean house! Make a clean sweep of malice and pretense, envy and hurtful talk. You’ve had a taste of God. Now, like infants at the breast, drink deep of God’s pure kindness. Then you’ll grow up mature and whole in God.” 1 Peter 2:1,2 (MSG)
Although “cleanliness is next to godliness” is one of those often quoted Scriptures that are not in Scripture, Spiritual cleanliness is what faith in God is all about.
When we come to saving faith, we are cleansed by the washing of renewal in baptism. When we become the temple of the Holy Spirit, we need to be aware that we can’t expect Him to live in a cesspool of sin. Thank God that He comes with His own janitor service to help us keep His dwelling place clean.
As babes in Christ, we haven’t been potty trained. We must rely totally on the sanctifying power of God’s Spirit to cleanse us, but we can’t expect the Holy Spirit to change our diapers forever. Somewhere along the road to spiritual maturity, we have to get off the breast and on to solid food.
We need to know that we have been made dead to sin and alive in Christ. This new life comes with a new nature, and the cleanliness of Christ becomes the model for growing into His fullness.
When we clean house, we need to check every nook and cranny in every room of our hearts to make sure that all trash, dust and dirt is removed. We need to give ourselves a frequent white glove inspection to make sure that we are providing a clean dwelling place for the honored guest Who has come to live with us.
Father, help me to keep my child like faith and trust, but to grow inwardly and outwardly into the fullness of Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen
