Colossians 2:6-8… As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. If you are a Christian, are you equipped to discern spiritual truth from error ?? The Bible is filled with warnings about false prophets in the Old, as well as the New Testament. Here is an example of the Lord warning the prophet Jeremiah about this, in the Old Testament…
Jeremiah 14:14… And the Lord said to me, “The prophets prophesy lies in My name. I have not sent them, commanded them, nor spoken to them; they prophesy to you a false vision, divination, a worthless thing, and the deceit of their heart. (NKJV)
And here is Jesus Himself, warning us about false prophets, in…Matthew 7:15… “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. (NKJV)
The Apostle Paul pens this about how deceiving these false teachers can be, in…2 Corinthians 11:13-14… For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. (NKJV)
Any church or person who teaches church doctrine that cannot be found in the Bible, is teaching based on their own agenda, what has been handed down from generation to generation through tradition, or some other false teaching. The opening scripture has the Apostle Paul warning us of this, when teaching is based on “philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.“
There are churches today that are filled with people, and growing in numbers…because the people going to them are made to feel good when they leave. There is no spiritual biblical truth being preached from God’s Word, because it would convict them that they are sinners. They leave church believing they have fulfilled their weekly obligation to the Lord, and proceed back into the world of sin and deception until the following Sunday morning.
The Apostle Paul warns his protegé Timothy about this, in…2 Timothy 4:2-4… Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. (NKJV)
Teaching about God’s grace through understanding and obeying the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, should be taught in any church that God would approve of. And there is only one gospel of Christ. Heavenly Father, I pray that eyes would be opened to the truth found in Your Word, and spoken by Your faithful servant Dr. Stanley. Help all of us Lord, through the power and the conviction of the Holy Spirit…to be able to discern the truth You want us to understand from Your inerrant Word, the Bible. I pray for this spiritual guidance in all of our lives, in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…
