“The More That Really Matters”
“When you grab all you can get, that’s what happens: the more you get, the less you are.” Proverbs 1:19 MSGWe are a nation of people obsessed with getting more. Whether it’s more car, house, money, food, sex, pleasure, drugs, or approval many of us are wanting and sometimes willing to do anything to get more.
As we read the history of God’s people we find that grumbling and complaining for more has been an age old problem.
It started with Adam and Eve who wanted more equality with God. Although being well fed with manna from heaven, the Israelites wanted more variety of food.
The insatiable demand for more toys, games, and gadgets among our children is getting bigger and more expensive all the time. The more they get, the more they want, and the less satisfied they become with what they have.
Amidst all of the desires of our flesh that fuel our perceived needs satisfaction, we too easily forget about wanting the more that really matters.
We forget that becoming more like Jesus is the plan and purpose toward which God is working all things for our good.
The Bible calls it being transformed and we achieve it by the ongoing renewing of our minds by abiding in and becoming imitators of Christ on a day by day, year to year process of growing into spiritual maturity.
Seeking to become more like Jesus is the only more that can really satisfy. When “I would be happy if only I had more” turns into “I am happy because I have eternal peace and joy in Christ”, we will find that all surpassing peace and joy.
Father, keep me ever mindful that wanting more of Jesus should be the number one priority of my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen
