Matthew 5:37…  But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.  (NKJV)

This opening scripture was recorded by Matthew, when Jesus was speaking about oaths that were taken in the name of the Lord, in His “Sermon on the Mount” teaching, in…Matthew 5:1 thru 7:29…  John MacArthur states in my study notes, that he believes Jesus was suggesting “that ALL of our speech should be as if we were under oath to tell the truth”…   When we knowingly make a promise to someone, when we have absolutely no intention of keeping the promise…this is of course is a lie, and would be a sin in God’s eyes…

Today I write, targeting the younger generation in particular, to impress upon them what I have learned over my 30+ years in the business world…  I dealt with all kinds of people while working for only 2 companies, since I graduated from college way back when…  I can’t begin to tell you how many times I was promised something…and promises were broken over and over again…

My friends, when we tell someone we are going to do this or that…though it is not an oath made in the name of the Lord…our promise or commitment should be kept as best we can, or the person we have made that promise to should be called with a reason for not following through…  Of course its possible that one can simply forget to make a written note of the promise to remind themselves…but when this happens time and time again, it is something (at least for me) that lowers the level of personal integrity of the person breaking the promise…

Here is the definition of a Google search of “integrity”… 1.the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.  “he is known to be a man of integrity”
synonyms:
honesty, probity, rectitude, honor, good character, principle(s), ethics, morals, righteousness, morality, virtue, decency, fairness, scrupulousness, sincerity, truthfulness, trustworthiness
“I never doubted his integrity”
As a nerdy engineer out of college, I always had a plastic pocket protector in my dress shirt pocket at work, to keep pens and markers from leaking on my shirt…  I used to make notes of any promise or commitment I would make on a piece of paper, and stuff it in my pocket to be sure and not forget about it…  My integrity has always been an important part of my personal make-up…I guess because it was instilled in me by my loving and caring parents, from the time I was old enough to understand its importance…

Thank goodness today I have my smart phone and a PC with a Microsoft Outlook Calendar !!  Without these aids to help me remember appointments and commitments…I would be just one of those people not living up to the words that have come out of my mouth…

It takes time to develop personal integrity…  It’s important for me personally, to never have someone ask me why I didn’t follow through with what I had told them…  If I tell someone something, they can be sure I meant what I said…  But it wouldn’t take but a few times of going back on my word, to ruin my integrity that has taken years to develop…

When you have someone who fails to do what they say they are going to do for you, especially a family member or a friend…do you love them enough to explain how important it is to follow through on their commitment ??  There is neglect in many of this younger generation to think about the long-term effects, which not following through on promises and commitments could create, especially in their work environment…  And the personal relationships they have with family and friends can also suffer because of their lack of following up on the commitments they have made…

I urge all readers, before they make a promise or commitment to anyone…to be reasonably certain they can fulfill their obligation…  In the business world, keeping our word is perhaps one of the most important character traits we need to be concerned about…  Corporate management likes to promote those employees that they can trust, who have developed an integrity that they can depend on, no matter what…

Heavenly Father, I pray that learning to follow through on promises and commitments becomes an important part of all of our lives…  Help us Lord, to understand that making knowingly false promises, twisting the truth, or misleading others by telling only a partial truth is not only a sin against the person we are misleading…it is a sin against You…  I pray that our yes will always be yes, and our no, always be no…in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…

Blessings in Christ,  bruce r mills
