Only One Way

I had a wonderful talk with my 6-year-old daughter the other day. She had so many spiritual questions, from “Who is Satan?” to “How do we know the Bible is true?” This was certainly a God-appointed encounter. I was not expecting it, and it reminded me how I need to be ready in season and out. I worked through all the questions that she had, trying my best to explain it to her and looking at the Word with her, and our conversation eventually ended with the gospel. I asked her, “If God asked you, ‘Why should I let you into my heaven?’ what would you say?”

“Because Jesus loves me.”

That was her reply. Nothing more, nothing less. And, I was reminded of how beautiful childlike faith is. Didn’t Jesus say, “Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” (Luke 18:17)?

When I was first faced with the question I had asked my daughter, I had an endless list of reasons why I should go to heaven. And, each one of them began with me. But, Christ has warned us about such presumptions.

“On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.'” (Matthew 7:22-23)

It is a sobering thought. There is only one reason why a wicked sinner, like me, would even find herself in heaven, in the presence of God Himself.

Because Jesus loves me.

On the cross, He loved me. And one day, I will see Him, the lover of my soul.
