God Won’t Forget What You Have Done

“For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do”  Hebrews 6:10

HEBREWS 6:9-13

How often do we see someone respond to an altar call, profess salvation, and then disappear until Christmas or Easter? Their salvation ticket is punched in their minds, and their work for the Lord is done. We cannot blame them totally for this, as they probably do not know better in the first place. It is the responsibility of mature believers to teach the young in the faith what their responsibilities are after they come to Jesus.

God does have expectations of us; our salvation is not so much for us (although the benefit to us is enormous)! God saves us to showcase his great glory. In a nutshell, God has two broad expectations of his children after they are saved. One, He expects us to live holy lives and increase in holiness; He expects us to turn from our sin physically and quit doing what we did. Two, He expects us to serve. God has a plan and a place for each of us that help His plan come to fruition, and He expects us to answer his call on our lives.

In Hebrews Chapter 6, Paul has had several conversations. He warned unbelievers what their lack of salvation might look like and issued them some warnings. Then, in our devotional passage, Paul tells us what salvation looks like. Salvation serves. God expects it, and God will reward those who do. Further, Paul attempts to assure the believers he was writing to that he had confidence in their salvation in Jesus Christ.

What do assurance of salvation and good works have to do with each other? Friends, we do not work for our salvation and contribute nothing to it. Further, works do not secure our salvation; we are kept by God’s decision and power.

My point is this: if you are working to get or keep salvation, stop it. Both endeavors are doomed to failure, and both only happen by God’s grace through Jesus Christ. On the other hand, if you are saved, you have no need to worry about work to keep that salvation; you can concentrate on the works God wants you to do. Are you ready to lay down your burden of work and enter into the joy and freedom of work?
