Convicted and Freed

I acknowledged my sin to you.

Psalm 32:5

Today’s Scripture & Insight :

Psalm 32:1-7

“I didn’t do it!” It was a lie, and I almost got away with it, until God stopped me. When I was in middle school, I was part of a group shooting spitballs in the back of our band during a performance. Our director was an ex-marine and famous for discipline, and I was terrified of him. So, when my partners in crime implicated me, I lied to him about it. Then I lied to my father also.

But God wouldn’t allow the lie to go on. He gave me a very guilty conscience about it. After resisting for weeks, I relented. I asked God and my dad for forgiveness. A while later, I went to my director’s house and confessed. Thankfully, he was kind and forgiving.

I’ll never forget how good it felt to have that burden lifted. I was free from the weight of guilt and happy for the first time in weeks. David describes a time of conviction and confession in his life too. He tells God, “When I kept silent, my bones wasted away . . . . For day and night your hand was heavy on me.” He continues, “Then I acknowledged my sin to you” (Psalm 32:3-5).

Authenticity matters to God. He wants us to confess our sins to Him and also to ask forgiveness of those we’ve wronged. “You forgave the guilt of my sin,” David proclaims (v. 5). How good it is to know the freedom of God’s forgiveness!

Reflect & Pray

How has being authentic with God helped you? How has Jesus’ forgiveness lightened your load and changed your life?

Thank You for forgiving my sins when I confess them to You, loving Father. Please help me to always be authentic with You.

Hear of the great joy being authentic with God can bring.

Raising GenNext: Scripture Writing Plan September 2024

August 31, 2024Elihu

Even if you’re not a parent or grandparent, don’t skip this post!!

If you have been following Jesus for a long time and are a member of a local congregation, this scripture-writing plan is for you too.

Although the responsibility of training and teaching children falls into the lap of their parents, each of us within the church have a responsibility to the young –whether they are young in age or young in faith–to encourage their growth in the Lord.

We can learn much from the successes and failures of ancient Israelites. The priests were commanded to teach the people and the people were commanded to teach their children, yet soon after the death of Joshua we read this chilling section:

“And there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel. And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals.  And they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt.”

Judges 2.10-12, ESV

It’s easy to blame the Israelite parents. After all, they had direct stewardship over those souls. However, the passage implies this was a pervasive problem: the entire generation “did not know the Lord or the work he had done for Israel.” The nation as a whole had failed in their work. The Scriptures remind us that the church is the spiritual nation of the Lord, and we are in danger of drifting just as much as the Israelites were.

When I wrote about Raising GenNext eight years ago, I recommended 6 E’s:

Engage: Develop meaningful relationships with fellow Christians

Exemplify: Demonstrate how a Christian ought to live

Equip: Teach and train

Entrust: Involve in the important

Edify: Build up

Entreat: Go to the Lord on their behalf.

As you write through the scriptures this month, keep these 6 E’s in mind. Many of the scriptures are geared towards training “children,” but if you don’t have children at home, consider how you apply some principles to those who are young in the faith. Here are some parting thoughts:

Parents: teach your children! You are closest to the action. You have boots on the ground. It starts with you. If you have adult children, how are you continuing to strengthen their faith?

Grandparents: help teach your grandchildren. You have more influence than you realize. Share what God has done in your life. Share your stories about how He has been at work in your life.

College and/or Early Career Adults: set an example for the young kids in your love and zeal for God. Be present! Show that God is the center of your life even when you’ve moved out on your own. Your example (good or bad) can have tremendous influence.

Adults: Life tends to be demanding during the time between your early career and retirement, but this can be a time of great productivity for the Lord! Live your faith everywhere you are. Be an example to believers and non-believers alike. Make time for your brothers and sisters in Christ. Be hospitable.

Older adults: You may be retired from a career, but don’t retire from serving the Lord. Until He calls you home, keep on encouraging the generations younger than you. Middle-aged parents of teens need your love and support as they sail those choppy waters. Caregivers need your example of godliness. Young people need your wisdom. Testify to them all the power of God. (Side note: One of the adults in my congregation during college took me with her for regular visits to an elderly lady who was in assisted living for Alzheimer’s. That sweet elderly lady encouraged me in ways she didn’t even realize, because despite her Alzheimer’s she had not forgotten about the power and love of the Lord. She testified about His love to the very end.)

I hope you’ll join with us as we write through these passages regardless of where you are in your life. As you meditate on these truths in the Word, consider how you can encourage the upcoming generation of Christians to hold fast to the faith and be firm in their zeal.

LIFE’S MARATHON

Posted on August 12, 2024 by atimetoshare.me

“Life is a culmination of the past, an awareness of the present, an indication of a future beyond knowledge, the quality that gives a touch of divinity to matter.”   Charles Lindbergh

There’s nothing wrong with setting goals.  By planning our futures we’re being wise stewards of our time and talents.  At an early age, we learn to tie our shoes or ride a bike.  When we begin school, we realize that we don’t achieve without knowledge.  Our parents often remind us that we aren’t working up to our potential.  As we become teens we start thinking about relationships and where they will go.

Once we leave the educational system, reality sets in – and I’m not talking about the kind you see on many of today’s television shows.  We find that the goals we’re setting may be unattainable.  We run into roadblocks that slow down the race.  We get beat up by disappointment, failure, desperation, hopelessness. By the time we reach our senior years, it doesn’t seem important to set goals.  We may wonder. “What’s the use?”   The main achievement on any given day is getting out of bed.

Running a race requires watching our diet, training our minds to focus on the goal and preparing physically. Because these things tend to turn our focus inward, we forget to set our eyes on the final destination. We put all of our attention into what WE can accomplish by our own actions, rather than asking for help.

Look forward to the final destination, while keeping these things in mind:  [As a redeemed, “born again” believer]

  • The race is being run daily.  Look at each day as an opportunity.

  • We are not alone.

  • Plan each step for the future with the knowledge that there will be road blocks.

  • The Word of God, the Bible is our manual for how to live.

  • We can do all things with God’s intervention.

  • The prize has already been won.

  • Our victory is assured through Jesus, Christ.

Dear Father in heaven, I’ve already won the eternal prize through your forgiveness.  As I run through the rest of the race continue to nourish me through your Holy Word. Help me realize that you are right there beside me – encouraging, lifting me up, supporting me and giving me the hope of my future with you.  Keep my vision focused on you and your amazing grace and use me to share that wonderful message with others.  Amen!

Keep Giving Love

AUGUST 16, 2021 ~ DAWN

1 John 4:19 NIV, “We love because he first loved us.”

When loving people, especially difficult people, gets hard, this simple yet powerful verse reminds us of the love God has for us. Because of His love for us, we should give others love too. His love in our lives, enables us to extend mercy and compassion to others. Where would we be if God did not first love us? How many ways has His love changed our lives? The fact that God loves us and puts His love for us first, before all things, including our sins, is a reason to rejoice! Love is the reason Jesus died for our sins (John 3:16Romans 8:9). May we honor God by loving others in a way that brings Him glory. His love endures forever.

Doctrines of the Faith: The Church

Posted on July 28, 2024 by Beth Andrews

I grew up in the church. Cradle Roll, Sunbeams, Mission Friends, Sunday School, Girls in Action, Acteens, and of course, I attended worship every Sunday, even as a kid. I am of the pre-Children’s Church generation. My artwork adorned the bulletin every week. And perhaps a few hymnals. In the southern U.S. where I was raised, church was a way of life. People didn’t ask if you went to church, they asked you where you went to church, because almost everyone did. My, how times have changed.

When I grew up and moved out of my parent’s house, I slipped away from church for a while, but when my marriage ended and I returned home, I also returned to the little church of my childhood. It was as natural as breathing for me. Church is still at the center of my life and was my career for most of my adult life.

Not everyone shares my love for the church. Some people dismiss the church out of hand, some people criticize and mock the church, and some people hate the church. But what is the church? What was it created to do? Why would the Lord invest His plan in the church? And are we fulfilling that plan in obedience?

The church is not a building nor is it an ideology. The church is people, flawed, but saved people. God’s people. The church is “blood-bought, born again, redeemed, justified, children of God.” The first mention of “church” is in Matthew 16:18 when Jesus declared that the church would be built, not on Peter, but on Peter’s confession “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (v. 16). The church is a group of people who share Peter’s confession. The word church means a gathering of people who are called out of the world and into the Kingdom of God, though they remain in the realm of the physical world. The church is an individual congregation, and it is the collective whole of all believers in Christ. It spans generations, meaning you and me and Peter are equal members of Christ’s church.

What makes the church more than another club with a good agenda? The Spirit of Christ that fills every believer for faith and service. This is how Jesus promised to be with the church (Matt 18:20; 28:20). The church is a living, breathing, growing, working entity. It is you and me. It’s Sunday morning, Beloved – won’t you come meet with me and Jesus today?

What Is A Christian? – How You Can Know Christ

December 13, 2022brm7

Photo by Bruce Adams

by Bill Rudge

Believers in Jesus were first called Christians at Antioch (Acts 11:26). The testimony of Jesus as the Christ (Messiah) was so strong in Antioch (the largest city of the Roman province of Syria and a center for missionary activity) that His followers and disciples were identified as Christians (a term of derision in the earliest days of the church meaning “of the family of Christ” but eventually, followers of Christ came to love and adopt this name).

Today, Christian has a much broader and often entirely different meaning than its initial use. Many believe a Christian is someone who merely goes to church, believes in God, lives a good life, or tries to keep the commandments. While it is true that such things as attending church, water baptism, living a godly lifestyle, and a loving attitude should definitely be marks of a believer, these should never be misconstrued as the criteria for someone becoming a Christian. We must examine Scripture and, based upon its authority, determine what it really means to come to faith in Jesus Christ.

Not by Works

According to Scripture, doing good works or keeping God’s Law does not make someone a Christian. The apostle Paul explains that one of the purposes of the Law in the Tanakh (Old Testament), which is based upon the Ten Commandments, was to show us that we all are sinners and can never achieve the standards required by God. Because of our sinful nature, we continually fall short of the mark. This dilemma reveals our need for a Savior:

By the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin (Romans 3:20).

Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith (Galatians 3:24).

Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent” (John 6:28-29).

Paul makes it clear that God’s righteousness can only be obtained through faith, and that Israel did not attain it because they sought it not by faith, but by works:

What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; but Israel, who pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it.

Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the “stumbling stone.”

As it is written: “See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame” (Romans 9:33 NIV).

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

Isaiah 5:20

When people start trying to justify wrong behavior and wrong actions, it brings forth pride, arrogance, and the lack of humility. They start to rewrite the rule book, and then selectively enforce it without regard for what is right. They get the idea that they are smarter than everyone else, and because they are so bright, people ought to follow them in their confusion. Pretty soon, everyone is all mixed up, and they begin to call evil good, and that which is good, evil.

We need to hold on to the truth as God has revealed it to us. Then we will be able to distinguish right from wrong. And perhaps then, we will be able to keep some level of sanity without total confusion becoming the norm. May God help us to do it.

Meditations on Faith

If you believe with all your heart, you may.

Acts 8:36

These words may address any hesitations the devout reader may have about the ordinances. Perhaps you say, “I am afraid to be baptized; it is such a solemn thing to declare myself to be dead with Christ and buried with Him. I do not feel at liberty to come to Communion; I am afraid of eating and drinking judgment to myself, of failing to discern the Lord’s body.” Come now, trembling one, Jesus has given you liberty—do not be afraid.

If a stranger came to your house, he would stand at the door or wait in the hall; he would not dream of entering uninvited into your home—he is not at home. But your child enjoys complete freedom in the house; and so is it with the child of God. A stranger may not intrude where a child may venture. When the Holy Spirit has given you to feel the spirit of adoption, you may be baptized and take communion without apprehension. The same rule holds good for the Christian’s inward privileges. Perhaps you think that you are not allowed to rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory; if you are permitted just to get inside Christ’s door or sit at the end of His table, you will be content with that. But you will not have less privileges than the strongest saint.

God makes no difference in His love to His children. A child is a child to Him; He will not make him a hired servant. The son will feast upon the fatted calf and have the music and dancing as much as if he had never wandered away. When Jesus comes into the heart, He issues a general permit to be glad in the Lord. No shackles are worn in the court of King Jesus. Our admission into full privileges may be gradual, but it is certain. Perhaps our reader is saying, “I wish I could enjoy the promises and walk at liberty in my Lord’s commands.” “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” Loosen the chains at your neck and live in freedom, for Jesus makes you free!

Today’s Devotion from Psalms 365

Reading: Psalm 16
miktam of David.

Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge.
I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord;
apart from you I have no good thing.”
I say of the holy people who are in the land,
“They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”
Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more.
I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods
or take up their names on my lips.
LORD, you alone are my portion and my cup;
you make my lot secure.
The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
surely I have a delightful inheritance.
I will praise the LORD, who counsels me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
I keep my eyes always on the LORD.
With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest secure,
because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
nor will you let your faithful one see decay.
You make known to me the path of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence,
with eternal pleasures at your right hand

Reflection
In seed form, all the great truths of the New Testament are rooted in the Psalms. Psalm sixteen perfectly illustrates this little-known fact. At the start of this psalm, David declares, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.”

In his epistle to the Romans, Paul writes, “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find” (Romans 7:18). His words are a rough paraphrase of David’s opening thoughts in Psalm 16. All of Romans chapter seven reflects our great need for our God and Savior. Without Jesus, there is no redemption and no hope for victory over sin. But with Paul, we can joyfully conclude, “Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:25).

We find ourselves in full agreement with David’s words, “LORD, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure.” Our Savior is our portion and cup—our food and drink. He alone is our cup of salvation. Unless we eat and drink of Him we die. David eloquently expresses his communion with the LORD; David ate and drank in the LORD and so must we. In seed form, David grasped the New Testament concept of communion.

Jesus was echoing David’s thoughts when he said, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day” (John 6:53-54).

Response: Heavenly Father, I want to live my life in constant communion with You. I want to live in Your presence and eat and drink of You, Lord Jesus. I know apart from You I have no good thing. You are my portion and my cup. I give You thanks. Amen.

Your TurnHow are you eating and drinking in God today? How does that concept become a reality?
