Guest Post: Verse Reflection of Romans 5:3-5

Romans 5:3-5 (NKJV)

And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Looking at these verses reminds me of how I can give glory to the Lord even in the midst of difficulties. I can know that God has a purpose for each trial that I face; even if He has not revealed what the reason is. He gives trials to believers to help us change and grow. As a believer, I need to be sanctified and turn to the Lord quickly when trouble comes my way. He is faithful and compassionate to give us what we need and to answer our prayers.

Perseverance is the product and result of spiritual trials. My desires need to be for holiness and growth in my understanding of God and His word. I need the Lord to continuously point out my sins and faults because of my own spiritual blindness. Only He can make me holy and reflect Christ and His character. The Holy Spirit works in my heart to change my sinful and stubborn ways. Knowing His promises are true, I can have confidence and pray for holiness, and cry out to God for help.

Our hope is in Christ, and He can give us the love that we need to share the gospel with others. The gospel is our standard and our encouragement. Christ is our perfect example of how to respond during tribulations. He used Scripture, meditated on His Father’s promises, and prayed continuously, and His desires were to please God the Father in all things. May each new day we seek Him and be thankful for another chance to serve our Lord and King. May we begin each morning in prayer, meditation on Scripture, and in praise to the Lord for His goodness.

The Most Comfortable and Pleasant Life

August 22, 2024 by Nancy Ruegg

Jeremy, Age 3

When our younger son Jeremy was about three, and people would ask, “What would you like to be when you grow up?” he offered a unique response: fire truck.

Well-meaning folks tried to amend his answer. “You mean a fire fighter?”

“No!” he’d state emphatically. “A fire truck!”

No doubt the blaring siren and rumbling engine appealed to our rambunctious little boy who liked all things noisy, but didn’t understand the parameters of adult vocation.

There’s another response to that quintessential question of adults-to-children, one that would also surprise: “I want to be a servant!”

Truth is though, scripture has a lot to say about all of us taking on the role of servant. One website lists one hundred verses on the topic [1].

And though serving others may require sacrifice, God is quick to bless us when we do. The list of benefits happens to make a tidy acrostic too.

To be a servant of God produces the following in our lives:

S atisfaction

Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than receive”[2], which applies to money and gifts, of course, but also to the giving of time and effort.

Life is more meaningful when we touch and bless the lives of others”

—Carole Ladd, Thrive, Don’t Simply Survive, 186.

E nablement

We tend to look at our feeble capacities and forget that results don’t depend on our competence, but God’s perfect proficiency working through us.

In fact, God has promised to equip us with everything we’ll need in order to serve according to his directives [3].

R eward

Scripture makes clear: Upon our arrival in heaven, our gracious heavenly Father will reward us for our good deeds—rewards that will be just as good and perfect as he is.

But some rewards come immediately, such as the joy and satisfaction mentioned above. God has engineered our spirits to be refreshed as we seek to refresh others [4].

V alue

God values servanthood. He sent his own beloved Son, the King of the universe, to this earth in order to serve others.

And know this: nothing we do for him will be a waste of time or effort [5].

A ccolades

When Jesus returns to earth, “each will receive their praise from God” (1 Corinthians 4:5). Note the Apostle Paul doesn’t say the only ones to receive praise will be the best-of-the-best with a long list of impressive achievements.

No, God will praise each of us for the good we’ve accomplished—the kind words we’ve spoken, the attentive listening we’ve offered, even the menial tasks we’ve completed—because “faithfulness with a small thing is a big thing” (Hudson Taylor).

And one day we’ll hear that glorious commendation from God himself: “Well done, good and faithful servant” [6].

N obility

No, God’s servants don’t become lords and ladies or dukes and duchesses. It’s another definition for nobility that applies here, a definition that includes virtue, goodness, and honor.

Actually, the title of “Lord’s servant” is a high honor bestowed upon just a handful of people in the Old Testament, including Abraham, Moses, David, and Isaiah [7].

It’s a title we can wear with righteous pride!

T hriving

In 1714 pastor/Bible commentator Matthew Henry lay dying. He was only fifty-three, and had already buried his first wife and three of his children.

Henry might have been bitter, but he said to a friend, “A life spent in the service of God, and communion with Him, is the most comfortable and pleasant life that one can live in the present world” [8].

And that gift of “a most comfortable and pleasant life” may be ours also, as we choose to live in communion with God and spend our lives in His service.

*     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *

Lord God, may I contentedly express my love for you by serving others, delighting in what you empower me to do for your sake.

P.S. That little guy who wanted to be a fire truck? He’s now a pastor.

Coping with a Crisis

May 1, 2024

coping with a crisis

On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us.      2 Corinthians 1:10 (NIV)

Through the course of life, the average person can encounter the loss of a loved one, being fired, betrayal at the hand of a friend, family calamity, rejection, bankruptcy, divorce, being ostracized, terminal illness, and so on. You may not be in a crisis now, but sooner or later you will be. Here are five biblical principles for coping with a crisis:

  1. Release your emotions. Fear, anxiety, anger, depression, bitterness, helplessness, grief, despair, resentment, and shock, go hand in glove with a crisis. It’s vital to acknowledge these emotions before God. If you deny, downplay, or dismiss your emotions, you’re excluding God. So let God in. Be honest with Him about how you feel. Matthew 5:4 says, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (NIV).

  2. Receive help from others. Galatians 6:2 tells us to; “Bear (endure, carry) one another’s burdens and troublesome moral faults, and in this way fulfill and obey perfectly the law of Christ” (Amplified). It’s a mistake to isolate yourself when you’re going through a crisis. God uses other believers to extend practical support, encouragement, sympathetic understanding, mercy, and wise counsel. “Two are better than one . . . If one falls down, his friend can help him up” Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (NIV).

  3. Reject negative feelings. You can’t choose to avoid a crisis but you can choose how you’ll let it affect you. You’re as happy as you choose to be. You can choose to be bitter, depressed, blame others, or rise above it. If you succumb to negative feelings, you’ll end up hurting yourself and shutting the door on your own happiness. So “fix your thoughts on what is true and good and right” Philippians 4:8 (LB). And “give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV).

  4. Rely on God’s Word. The Bible is an unparalleled source of comfort. There’s no crisis known to man that isn’t addressed by the Word. The Scriptures are sufficient, full of succor, and an unending source of strength. Read, meditate, and live by the Word.

  5. Rebuild around what really matters. The Chinese character for crisis consists of two characters – one representing danger and the other representing opportunity. In every crisis, there’s an opportunity to restructure your life. Crises occur to help us clarify our values, discover the things that really matter, and develop our character. Which begs a question. Who and what are you living for? Crises exist so that we can learn to become more like Christ. That’s what really matters . . .

WHERE DO YOU BELONG?

Posted on April 29, 2022 by Pastor Randy

The longing to belong is one of the most basic human emotions! I know there are those we call hermits who cut themselves off from all human contact. They achieve this by building a stone wall around that desire to belong to keep it under control. But this does not negate that most basic desire: the longing to belong! So, let me ask you this morning, “Where do YOU belong?” The answer lies in our true identity. And this is where all the chaos and problems begin.

Some think their identity is found in who they want to have sex with. No, this Preacherman isn’t afraid to talk about sex. Others think their identity is found in those who think just like them. Still, others think their identity is found in those who have the same fashion taste as they do. Still, others think their identity is found with those whose societal norms have declared they are the “in” group. Still, others think their identity is found with those who have the same political views. Still, others think their identity is found in those who like to do the things they like to do. Still others think. . .get my point?

But what if I told you that the longing to belong isn’t in any of these types of things? It’s the truth, whether you believe me or not. Remember that the longing to belong is one of, if not the most basic human need. Where does it come from? Glad you asked! It comes from The One who created us–God! God the Father! God the Son! God the Holy Spirit! Why do I say this? Because of all that God created only one thing bears His Image–and that’s us Human Beings! Not the trees, not the skies, not the stars, not the fish or any other critter. It’s Us Human Beings!

And why is this truth so important? (And it is very IMPORTANT!) God created us for intimate friendship and fellowship with Him and all the other Image Bearers! But with the introduction of sin (thanks, Adam and Eve!), that friendship and fellowship was broken. But don’t despair! God did something about that sin. He didn’t change His mind about sin! Au contraire, my friend. In fact, He showed us how damaging and destructive Sin is when His Son, Jesus, died on that Roman Cross. And through our faith in His act of grace-filled love, the disease of sin is taken out of us!

And we BELONG to God, Our Creator, Father, Savior, and Sustainer! Now some want to say that it’s love–love is what makes us holy! Whoa! Wait a second buckeroo! It isn’t love that makes us holy. It’s Holiness that makes us Love! Holiness is clearly defined by the Bible, not the so-called experts on the Bible. Holiness is more than what we do and don’t do. Holiness is the lifelong transformation back into our original image. And don’t think for a nano-second that means you have to give up your individuality. God doesn’t use a cookie cutter–that’s what Churchians and Tenured Pew Sitters do.

No, God made you uniquely YOU! Within this human form, there’s no way any one of us can fully express God’s Glorious Image! So, God gives His Image Bearers (at conception, I might add!) each a uniquely personal way to reveal His Glory. But if we let other things tell us where we belong–well–we just end up angry, bitter, and hateful. More than this, we end up empty. So don’t worry if others tell you that you don’t belong! After all, they didn’t create you. You belong to God who is working to bring HIS glory out in you!

Love God with all your heart. Love others the way Jesus loves you. And make sure all the glory goes to Him!

Question

What is the key to bearing fruit as a Christian?

Answer

In the natural world, fruit is the result of a healthy plant producing what it was designed to produce (Genesis 1:11–12). In the Bible, the word fruit is often used to describe a person’s outward actions that result from the condition of the heart.

Good fruit is that which is produced by the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:22-23 gives us a starting place: the fruit of His Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The more we allow the Holy Spirit free rein in our lives, the more this fruit is evident (Galatians 5:1625). Jesus told His followers, “I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last” (John 15:16). Righteous fruit has eternal benefit.

Jesus told us clearly what we must do to bear good fruit. He said, “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:4–5). A branch must stay firmly attached to the trunk to stay alive. As disciples of Christ, we must stay firmly connected to Him to remain spiritually productive. A branch draws strength, nourishment, protection, and energy from the vine. If it is broken off, it quickly dies and becomes unfruitful. When we neglect our spiritual life, ignore the Word of God, skimp on prayer, and withhold areas of our lives from the scrutiny of the Holy Spirit, we are like a branch broken off the vine. Our lives become fruitless. We need daily surrender, daily communication, and daily—sometimes hourly—repentance and connection with the Holy Spirit in order to “walk in the Spirit and not fulfill the lusts of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16). Staying intimately connected to the True Vine is the only way to “bear fruit in old age” (Psalm 92:14), to “run and not grow weary” (Isaiah 40:31), and to not “grow weary in well-doing” (Galatians 6:9).

One counterfeit to bearing good fruit is pretense. We can become experts at the routines, the lingo, and “acting Christian,” while experiencing no real power and bearing no eternal fruit. Our hearts remain self-centered, angry, and joyless even while we go through the motions of serving God. We can easily slip into the sin of the Pharisees of Jesus’ day in judging ourselves by how we think we appear to others and neglecting that secret place of the heart where all good fruit germinates. When we love, desire, pursue, and fear the same things that the rest of the world does, we are not abiding in Christ, even though our lives may be filled with church-related activity. And, often, we don’t realize that we are living fruitless lives (1 John 2:15–17).

Our works will be tested by fire. Using a different metaphor than fruit, 1 Corinthians 3:12–15 says, “If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.”

God is the judge of even our thoughts and motivations. All will be brought to the light when we stand before Him (Hebrews 4:12–13). A poor widow in a one-room hut can bear as much fruit as a televangelist leading giant crusades if she is surrendered to God in everything and uses all He has given her for His glory. As fruit is unique to each tree, our fruit is unique to us. God knows what He has entrusted to each of us and what He expects us to do with it (Luke 12:48). Our responsibility before God is to be “faithful with little” so that He can trust us with much (Matthew 25:21).

The Armor of God - What It Is and How to Put It On

Our Armor in Christ

The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world.

2 Corinthians 10:4

Today’s Scripture & Insight :

2 Corinthians 10:3-6

Pastor Bailey’s newfound friend shared with him the story of his abuse and addiction. Though the young man was a believer in Jesus, because of his exposure to sexual abuse and pornography at an early age, he was plagued with a problem that was bigger than he was. And in his desperation, he reached out for help.

As believers in Christ, we wage war with unseen forces of evil (2 Corinthians 10:3-6). But we’ve been given weapons to fight our spiritual battles. They aren’t the weapons of the world, however. On the contrary, we’ve been given “divine power to demolish strongholds” (v. 4). What does that mean? “Strongholds” are well-built, secure places. Our God-given arms include “weapons of righteousness in the right hand for attack and the left hand for defense” (6:7 nlt). Ephesians 6:13-18 expands the list of things that help protect us, including the Scriptures, faith, salvation, prayer, and the support of other believers. When faced with forces bigger and stronger than us, appropriating these munitions can make the difference between standing and stumbling.

God also uses counselors and other professionals to help those who struggle with forces too big to tackle alone. The good news is that in and through Jesus, we needn’t surrender when we struggle. We have the armor of God!

By:  Arthur Jackson

Reflect & Pray

Who might you reach out to for support in your personal struggle? What spiritual armor will you put on?

Dear Jesus, You’re more powerful than any force—seen or unseen. I need Your presence and power to be at work in me today.

JESUS CHANGES EVERYTHING

Posted on August 17, 2024 by atimetoshare.me

It seems the older I get, the less I know or understand. My life may seem hunky dory to most folks, but even those who seem to have it all together, face difficulties. Many times, those difficulties require smart choices, getting counseling or advice or having a strong connection with God through our prayers.

When everything runs smoothly, our stress levels are on an even keel, but when we’re faced with life-changing challenges, our whole existence transforms.  Our demeanor changes. Tears fall fast and furious. Our patience runs out. We try and fail. We try again. We feel helpless or hopeless. Anxiety and depression set in. There is only One who can relieve us of our anxiety, our suffering, our pain, our loss, our fears, and even our death.  He’s the One who brought good news to a sin-sick world – shed His blood for all sinners – suffered unbelievable physical and emotional distress and had no place to rest His head.  He’s the One who loves us unconditionally – who took our place – who died and rose again to prove that He is God and that His plan for humanity has been fulfilled. His name is JESUS.

When we reach a breaking point in life – when it seems that things will never fall into place for us – remember how important we are to Jesus.  He wants us to live good lives, but He’s got even better things in store for us in eternity. When we feel like we’re at the end of our rope or that we can’t endure one more thing, it’s time to turn to Jesus. Don’t wait until it comes to that point. He’s available right now. Once we surrender to His love and acknowledge the good news of what He’s done for us, everything changes.

“Jesus Makes Us Capable” 8/17/2024 Written by Dawn Ivey for “Drawing closer to Christ”

John 15:5 I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do

Jesus Makes Us Capable

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 NIV, “9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships,in persecutions,in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

It is human nature for us to want to be self-sufficient and in control of our lives. We think we can take care of ourselves by ourselves. But the truth is that in our own strength, we are not capable. We need God’s strength to sustain us because we fall short in many ways. Even when we go through seasons that seem like we “have it all together,” one thing can suddenly happen that reminds us we need the Lord. Life can change quickly.

Paul said that He boasted about his weaknesses because, through them, He experienced the power of Jesus Christ. We often struggle to make things happen in our own strength, but when we give our life over to Jesus, day by day, one situation at a time, we will find that through His power, we become strong and capable. Even when we experience fear or uncertainty, we can find the courage to keep progressing step by step.

Do you boast about your weaknesses knowing that through them Jesus can still use you to accomplish His will? The closer I got to Jesus, the more I understood what Paul meant. There is freedom when we begin to understand that in Christ, we don’t have to be perfect. When we humble ourselves before the Lord, He lifts us up in due time (1 Peter 5:6). Apart from Him, we can do nothing; even overcoming our weaknesses requires His help. Trust Jesus to sustain you. He loves you, even when your performance is not perfect.

Jesus is More Than a Meme

Posted on August 11, 2024 by Beth Andrews

I love roosters. I love their colors. I love how they strut. I love to hear their “cock-a-doodle-do! I love the life they represent – rural, peaceful, simple. Oh, I’ve never had a rooster. But I love them. For decoration. My kitchen and dining room are an artistic barnyard with figurines and pictures of roosters all over. I love how they look and the peaceful feeling they inspire, but that’s the extent of my connection to roosters.

Paul lamented people who go through life “having a form of godliness but denying its power” (2 Timothy 3:5). People who love the idea of Jesus and the teachings of Jesus and the wisdom of Jesus. But they don’t know Jesus. They are in a dangerous position.

Paul talked about “weak-willed women who are . . . always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth” (v. 6, 7).

As a Bible teacher, I’ve seen this too many times. Women – and men – who, like the Greeks in Athens, love to listen and talk about the latest ideas, but nothing takes hold in the soil of their hearts. They can sound Christian and post great Jesus memes, but there’s nothing of substance and no fruit growing in their lives. They like the peace and love that Jesus talked about, but they don’t want the righteousness, holiness, and suffering Jesus also talked about. My heart breaks for them because they are only deceiving themselves.

They are like the soil that Jesus said was rocky and shallow and thorny. Plants spring up, but they don’t last (see Matt 13:1-23).

If you and I are going to survive – and thrive – we need more than Jesus on our walls and t-shirts. We need Jesus in our hearts. We need Jesus on our minds. We need Jesus on our lips. We need His Word. We need His light. We need His truth. We need to know Him and love Him and believe Him. We need to put down deep roots in Him.

Beloved, if all you ever do is decorate your life with Jesus stuff but never develop a relationship with Him, you don’t know Jesus – you know about Him. I want you to know and love Him with all your heart, mind, and soul. I want you to “take hold of the life that is truly life” (1 Timothy 6:19). The life of Jesus.

Salvation: Easy as A-B-C and D

August 9, 2022brm7

by Bill Rudge

I have experienced hundreds of exciting witness encounters using insight through creative ideas and illustrations. Every encounter has its own approach and conversational style, but the final message is as simple as A-B-C and D:

A – Admit you are a sinner in need of God’s forgiveness. There is nothing you can do to pay the penalty of sin or earn your salvation (Romans 3:23). The penalty for sin is death, and only God’s righteous, sinless Son can pay that penalty. So, the only solution to your dilemma is to come to Jesus Christ in repentance, receive His free gift of salvation, and accept Him as your Savior and Lord. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12).

B – Believe in your heart that Jesus died for your sins and rose from the dead. Just believing in something doesn’t make it true, no matter how sincere you are. Nor is it the intensity of belief that makes something true. It is who and what you believe in that really matters. Jesus said, “…unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins” (John 8:24). To “believe in” is more than merely acknowledging the reality of Jesus Christ; it means “to trust in and rely on” – a belief that results in committing your life to Him.

C – Confess with your mouth that Jesus died and rose again. Tell others that you have accepted Him as your Savior and Lord. “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation” (Romans 10:9-10).

When you sincerely act on A, B, and C, something amazing happens. God’s Spirit indwells you and begins to mold you into a new creation. Your name is written in the Book of Life! And when you depart this life, you will be welcomed into God’s eternal kingdom and receive all He has prepared for those who love Him.

D – Demonstrate your faith by growing in your personal relationship with Jesus Christ through regular Bible study and prayer, fellowshipping with other believers, and being a witness to those who do not yet know Him. Demonstrate a changed life as His Spirit and Word transform you, molding you into the person you were created to be.

No Greater Love

Knowing and living for Jesus Christ is a wonderful spiritual journey with life-changing experiences and eternal blessings. Your acceptance of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord will prove to be the wisest, most courageous, and most eternally significant decision you will ever make.
