Part of being a good father is all the funny things they have to tell their children – like the ones you see in the image I’ve chosen for today. How many times have you used phrases like, “I had to walk a mile to school every day – in a blizzard – with plastic bread bags inside my boots – with the wind in my face.” or “You have no idea how good you have it.” The things we say to our children can have a fierce effect on them as they begin their own families. It seems history often repeats itself and we find ourselves saying the same silly things.
As far as discipline is concerned, when I was a child (I really dislike that phrase as well.) spankings weren’t considered child abuse, but my dad never laid a hand on me. The piercing glare in his eyes was like a double-edged sword. Those looks were more painful than any spanking.
His sharp words were also hurtful, but in the long run, they held more clout than anything. I now realize that those looks and words were intended for my good, but at the time I didn’t think so.
Despite the fact that he wasn’t the “Father Knows Best” dad that all kids wanted their dads to be, he did the best he could. Living with three females couldn’t have been easy for him. Getting time in our one-bathroom apartment, was an accomplishment in itself. At the least he must’ve felt outnumbered, but he knew how to stand his ground. I know he loved us, even though he didn’t often say it. He would brag about us when we weren’t present because he didn’t want us to get big heads.
I learned some valuable life lessons from him even though I didn’t realize it at the time. I learned to work hard for the things I wanted in life. In fact, I learned to do more than was expected. I also found that life isn’t always easy and that we have to take the good with the bad. I discovered that I should never underestimate myself or my abilities. He taught me to dream.
My dad was only 61 years old when he died. Before his death, I wrote him a letter to express my love for him. Here is an excerpt from that letter:
“When I was growing up there were times I couldn’t understand you. I often thought you didn’t know a thing. When I became a parent, I realized that you were one of the wisest men I’ve ever known. You shaped my life into something I can be proud of. Our children are with us for such a short time and we’re never sure if we’ve done all we could for them. You did your job, Dad. I hope you know that and because of it I will love you forever.”
Being a perfect dad is impossible, just like it’s impossible to be all that God wants us to be. We can try to meet the requirements, but we always fall short. The beauty of God’s Fatherly love is that He looks beyond our imperfections and loves us anyway.

Psalm 143:8Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.
As we start each new day, we can look to God and His unfailing love. He knows what is ahead and He is aware of every moment and every detail of our lives. We can trust Him completely. He desires to lead us into what is best for us.
Doubt and fear will sometimes hinder us from casting our cares on the Lord but as we learn to trust Him, we can experience the peace that He wants to give us, regardless of our circumstances. Peace that surpasses all understanding and His peace is only a prayer away. (Phil 4:7). No problem is too big or too small. So don’t hesitate to pray. Then trust God to answer your prayer and supply your needs.
May the joy of the Lord be your strength today as you rest in His unfailing love.

Paul wrote to Timothy, “Watch your life and doctrine closely” (1 Tim 4:16). Doctrine at its root is teaching – imparting information from one person to another. That’s my calling. But I’m not just teaching history or mythology or fantasy – it is truth. It is the Word of God. And it has the power to change lives. That is why I handle it with the utmost care. It is a huge responsibility.
There are a lot of teachers out there who will try to tell you what the Bible says. I’ve sat under some excellent teachers and some not-so-great teachers. Some teach from a classroom or a lectern, and some teach with their lives. Some teach by being godly examples and some teach us by being examples of what not to do or be.
Did you know that the devil has teachers too? Paul also told Timothy, “In later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons” (v. 1). You’d better believe demons are teachers too. But they don’t always teach in direct opposition to the Scriptures. They often teach in shades of truth. They will take just enough of the Scriptures to make it sound right, then twist it to get you off track.
For example, the culture’s favorite verse is “Do not judge” (Matt 7:1). But they do not understand the context. Jesus is speaking in the sense of condemning people – judging them unworthy of God’s grace. But He affirms “judgment” in terms of discernment. Like helping a brother remove the speck of dust in their eye (after clearing out our own). He says we do not throw sacred truth to dogs or pearls to pigs (v. 6). That is a judgment call. A few verses later, He said we are to be “fruit inspectors” (v. 15). He is calling us to wise discernment.
They also love verses about loving others. But they don’t understand that the most loving thing we can do is warn them about the coming wrath of God against those who do not believe in His Son. Humans want love, but the culture demands permissiveness in the guise of love. If my granddaughter wants to play in the busy road does love mean I let her go or I protect her from harm?
Do you see why I am such a stickler for careful Bible study and true doctrine? What you believe, what you think you know, affects how you live – and it affects your eternal security. Be wise, Beloved, only the truth will set you free.

The Bible is unique among all books in the world, but it sits closed and silent in many homes. Some consider it outdated and offensive—even dangerous—or only for the uneducated or unenlightened. Yet this Divine Library of 66 books (39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament) is anything but mute, archaic, or insignificant—and is dangerous only for those who ignore its instruction and scorn its warnings.
Numerous theologians, historians, doctors, and scientists confirm that the Bible is divinely inspired: verified by remarkable historical accuracy, amazing archaeological discoveries, insightful geography, fantastic scientific facts conveyed thousands of years before science learned of them, incredible health and nutritional information, astonishing prophecies concerning Messiah’s first and second comings, undeniable evidence for the resurrection of Christ, eyewitness testimony of those facing persecution and martyrdom—refusing to recant their faith in His resurrection, practical wisdom for living, time-proven morality, perceptive judiciary laws. The Bible genuinely answers life’s questions of who we are, where we came from, and where we are going, and solves the dilemmas of evil, sin, suffering, aging, and death.
The Bible provides knowledge and wisdom far beyond what the greatest minds could ever conceive. It is a literary masterpiece, with one central theme of redemption, written over a span of 1500 years by more than 40 authors (including shepherds, kings, priests, scholars, and prophets) on three continents (Asia, Africa, and Europe) and in three languages (Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic).
All Scripture “is inspired by God” (2 Timothy 3:16) – literally “God-breathed.” John MacArthur comments: “Sometimes God told the Bible writers the exact words to say, but more often He used their minds, vocabularies, and experiences to produce His own perfect infallible, inerrant Word.” In other words, a Divine Author inspired the authors and oversaw the entire process while allowing them to maintain their own styles and personalities.
The Bible is truly the most fascinating book in the world. It has held my interest and attention—amazing me for over 50 years. The more I study Scripture, the more I am impressed by its harmony, veracity, wisdom, and revelation. Both Testaments bear witness of a promised Messiah—His first coming as our Savior and His return to establish a Millennial and Eternal Kingdom.
Dr. Blythe Robinson, a friend and colleague now gone on to be with the Lord, said:
The Bible’s durability transcends the centuries of attacks upon it. Its transforming power for good over the lives of all who accept it, continues. Few realize that it is the most expensive book in the world. It has cost the lives of untold thousands who gave their lives through the ages to preserve it and pass it on unchanged to us.
The Bible is so easy to understand that a child can grasp God’s promise of salvation, yet so complex that a lifetime of extensive study will not even begin to delve into the depths of its timeless revelations or discover the priceless jewels of wisdom contained within.
The truths in Scripture and coming to know the One who inspired it have provided purpose for the searching, and hope for the downtrodden and have transformed the lives of countless people throughout history—including mine and hopefully yours. Only a personal relationship with the Creator can truly satisfy a yearning heart as we await the day of our complete redemption and God’s creation being restored to its intended glory.
Norman Geisler and Frank Turek wrote an insightful book entitled, I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist. I completely concur because it would take more faith for me to not believe in Jesus Christ! The miraculous interventions I have witnessed confirm and validate for me the reality of the God of the Bible. I would have to be biased, weak, and foolish to deny the Creator and His Word. Surrendering my life to Christ has proven the wisest, strongest, and most courageous decision I ever made.
The Bible’s final authority is demonstrated in the fact that all of humanity will one day be judged by Jesus’ words (John 12:48). Begin today to navigate the depths of the riches of God’s Word. It will provide wisdom and hope throughout the remainder of your life’s journey and prepare you for eternity!

“For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do”Hebrews 6:10
HEBREWS 6:9-13
How often do we see someone respond to an altar call, profess salvation, and then disappear until Christmas or Easter? Their salvation ticket is punched in their minds, and their work for the Lord is done. We cannot blame them totally for this, as they probably do not know better in the first place. It is the responsibility of mature believers to teach the young in the faith what their responsibilities are after they come to Jesus.
God does have expectations of us; our salvation is not so much for us (although the benefit to us is enormous)! God saves us to showcase his great glory. In a nutshell, God has two broad expectations of his children after they are saved. One, He expects us to live holy lives and increase in holiness; He expects us to turn from our sin physically and quit doing what we did. Two, He expects us to serve. God has a plan and a place for each of us that help His plan come to fruition, and He expects us to answer his call on our lives.
In Hebrews Chapter 6, Paul has had several conversations. He warned unbelievers what their lack of salvation might look like and issued them some warnings. Then, in our devotional passage, Paul tells us what salvation looks like. Salvation serves. God expects it, and God will reward those who do. Further, Paul attempts to assure the believers he was writing to that he had confidence in their salvation in Jesus Christ.
What do assurance of salvation and good works have to do with each other? Friends, we do not work for our salvation and contribute nothing to it. Further, works do not secure our salvation; we are kept by God’s decision and power.
My point is this: if you are working to get or keep salvation, stop it. Both endeavors are doomed to failure, and both only happen by God’s grace through Jesus Christ. On the other hand, if you are saved, you have no need to worry about work to keep that salvation; you can concentrate on the works God wants you to do. Are you ready to lay down your burden of work and enter into the joy and freedom of work?

And let us not be weary in well doing for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
Galatians 6:9
Do you ever get tired or worn out? Ever thought about just giving up? The Lord knew, even before the foundations of the world, that men would grow weary, even in doing well. He taught us the value of perseverance. Sometimes we get so weary of fighting, that after a really tough round, we go to our corner and think about how good it feels just to sit there and get a few moments of rest and fresh air. It is good to rest, but God has not called you and I to rest all the time. You see, there is work for us to do while we are here on earth.
God will give us all we need to accomplish that work. Weariness is a human frailty. We need to be revived from time to time. We need encouragement, and more often than we think, we need HELP. Our help comes from the Lord, my friends. He is there to give us strength to continue, and He will come to our corner to enable us to go another round.
Spiritual warfare is hard. It is a tough fight, and we can’t endure it on our own. I encourage you this morning to not be weary in well doing, looking ahead to the due season where you and I shall reap a bountiful harvest, IF, we faint not.

Praise be to the LORD my Rock,
who trains my hands for war,
my fingers for battle.
He is my loving God and my fortress,
my stronghold and my deliverer,
my shield, in whom I take refuge,
who subdues peoples under me.
LORD, what are human beings that you care for them,
mere mortals that you think of them?
They are like a breath;
their days are like a fleeting shadow(NIV). *
Reflection Many nations have defining battles that cement their stature as a nation. For Canada that defining battle began on April 4th, 1917. Over the next three days Canadian forces captured Vimy Ridge in northern France from the German Army. Previously, French, and British forces had attempted to take the Ridge, but they were repelled.
The great battles of World War I were mired in stalemate. On the western front it is no exaggeration to say that millions of young men lost their lives for not a single meter of territory gained. How then did the Canadian troops manage to capture such a significant stronghold while suffering the loss of less than 3,500 men? A good part of the answer lies in training.
General Arthur Currie was a brilliant tactician. He had noted that in the past, battlefield advances ground to a halt when platoon commanders were killed or disabled. To overcome this predictable outcome, Currie insisted on training all his troops to reach their objective. The loss of a leader would not be a crippling blow. Every man carried a map and knew the plan to reach their objective for the day. On the day when the offensive was launched, thorough training from first man to last made all the difference. Despite many casualties, the Germans were unable to halt the steady, uphill, Canadian advance.
David, the warrior king, begins Psalm 144 with this declaration: Praise be to the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.
The church of Jesus Christ is in a spiritual battle. This is the great war of the ages. Have you been trained for battle? Do you even know there is a war raging? It’s a war for the eternal souls of men, women, and children. The Lord has provided all the armor we need. See Ephesians 6:10-20. Have you been trained in the use of your equipment? Are you knowledgeable in the Word of God? Are you familiar with the voice of your commanding officer? Do you have a map to your objective? Vimy Ridge wasn’t won by accident. It required careful planning. Taking territory from the prince of this world will require the same.
Response: LORD God, I need to be trained for battle. Help me to see and achieve the objectives You have set out for me. I want to hear Your voice and follow Your commands. Lead me to victory, Jesus. Amen.
Your Turn: Are there strongholds that God is asking you to attack? Do you have a strategy?

Life is much easier if you try to remember that the average IQ is about 100. The bad news is that means about half the population falls far below that.
One fine gentleman decided to argue that truth with me, blathering on about how I just didn’t understand the differences between “methods, means, and averages” until I felt like I was trapped in middle school math class and forced to say, “I know I am, but what are you” before just throwing a cafeteria tray of mashed potatoes at his head.
Which brings me to arrogance and pride. The existence of either automatically knocks 20 points off your score. You were a somewhat moderately intelligent human, but now your ego seems to have gone and fouled that all up for you.…
I jest a wee bit. Anyone who has read enough of me will know that I do not take IQ very seriously and that I certainly do not consider it a marker for any kind of wisdom or morality. Psychopaths can be highly intelligent and yet they are just the giant sucking sound of stupid out in the world.
A more artful way of expressing what I want to say today was once said by CS Lewis in “Mere Christianity” partially quoted here, “The bad psychological material is not a sin but a disease. It does not need to be repented of, but to be cured. And by the way, that is very important.
Human beings judge one another by their external actions. God judges them by their moral choices……..Most of the man’s psychological makeup is probably due to his body: when his body dies all that will fall off him, and the real central man, the thing that chose, that made the best or worst out of this material, will stand naked. All sorts of nice things which we thought were our own, but which were really due to good digestion, will fall off some of us: all sorts of nasty things which were due to complexes or bad health will fall off others. We shall then, for the first time, see everyone as he really was. There will be surprises.”
Life is much better if you remember that people often suffer from indigestion, trauma, and other assorted ailments and are probably not cutting you off in traffic or making your life miserable simply because they are mean, stupid, and willfully blind. I am chuckling here, but I have to embrace that notion on blind faith alone. I could give Doubting Thomas a run for his money. Just the same, I insist on it being true.
Somebody else smart once said, “our faith needs to be helping us to develop more compassion, more forgiveness, and more empathy for one another or else it isn’t really serving it’s purpose.” I really like that concept. I think there is truth there.
I personally have had to make the moral choice to expect a whole lot less of people. I kid you not, I think we should be far more advanced than we are as a human species, kindness should rule the day, and that incompetence should be exceedingly rare. You should now be able to immediately spot the nature of the problem. With those kinds of unrealistic expectations, I am sure to despair for all of mankind and just spend my life walking around muttering to myself.
I do, early and often.
I am just saying, God is faithful and the Lord has been really good at helping me to cure that, “bad psychological material that is not a sin but a disease.” That anxiety I used to feel when the whole world around me is going mad has eased up a great deal.
Just in the nick of time too, I tell ya….
All in good fun here, but I just want to give a Yelp review for Jesus. Like four stars, highly recommend it. So, so much peace for your soul. Sometimes that peace for your soul also brings some rest and good health to your body. He listens. He understands. He knows just what you need. He fixes everything, although the world around you may still be mad. Seriously, just read the Bible. Talk to Jesus. Let Him fill you with His peace.

What if you opened your mailbox one day to see a thick, cream-colored envelope among the ads and bills. Your name and address have been hand-calligraphed in gold ink, and an intricate seal is embossed upon the flap.
Inside you find an elegant invitation, announcing a grand celebration at the palace of a highly respected and beloved king.
“Come!” proclaims his request. “Come and enjoy an unlimited feast with me; come drink the finest wine. There is no cost to you.”
Would you attend? Surely you’d quickly return your R.S.V.P. with “YES” clearly marked!
Such a scenario is fiction, of course, except for one fact: God Almighty, the King of the universe, is a monarch to be highly-respected and beloved–above all others.
And he has issued an invitation to everyone–not just to a single banquet–but to a continual feast in his divine, spiritual kingdom. He bids us to come and enjoy a new, God-enhanced life.
Come, everyone who is thirsty, come to the waters;
and you without money, come, buy, and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost!
–Isaiah 55:1 HCSB
This invitation, proclaimed by the prophet Isaiah on behalf of our King, does include some puzzling statements. For example, why would he invite us “to the waters?” And what will we find there?
Just as water brings life and abundance in the realm of plants and trees, Christ’s living water provides soul-satisfying life and joyful abundance for us—the abundance of innumerable blessings [1].
And what about the wine that God says we can “buy without money?” Does it represent more than a celebratory drink? Oh yes! Wine is a metaphor here for spiritual joy, “a joy unspeakable and full of glory”[2] as we taste the goodness of God’s love.
And what about milk?
God would have us understand: that his invitation to kingdom-living includes those entities that sustain our spirits, including encouragement, strength, instruction, and help. We find all that and more in the nourishment of His Word, the Bible [3].
Puritan author and preacher, Thomas Brooks (1608-1680) wrote:
The Word of the Lord is a light to guide you, a counselor to counsel you, a comforter to comfort you, a staff to support you, a sword to defend you, and a physician to cure you. The Word is a mine to enrich you, a robe to clothe you, and a crown to crown you.–Thomas Brooks
Countless Jesus followers who read the Bible, study it, and meditate on its truths can affirm that Brooks is right; they’ve experienced time and again the life-changing power of God’s Word. That includes many of you reading this post.
In addition to his perpetual banquet invitation, God includes these instructions:
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good.
Let your soul delight in abundance.
Incline your ear [to listen] and come to Me;
hear, so that your soul may live.
–Isaiah 55:2b-3a AMP
To listen carefully includes the action of follow-through. And what would God have us do? “Eat what is good”—that is, experience the fullness of his goodness as we follow his ways, and take delight in the abundance of his blessings.
Then our souls can really live in the security and satisfaction he desires for us, in every moment of the present–and into eternity. And in the final analysis, isn’t that what we desire also?
All we need to do is come.
* * * * * * * * * *
I praise you, my King, for your open invitation to come and feast upon all the good things you offer. You prepare a table before me of forgiveness, salvation, peace, joy, strength, comfort, contentment, purpose, and more.
No amount of money on earth could purchase such priceless, heavenly gifts that you so freely give to those who simply COME.I will praise your name for ever and ever!

“The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace” Romans 8:6
People often ask me, “Pastor, how can I know God’s will … ?” My response, “It’s not as hard as it seems. Here are five principles to help you discern God’s will.”
Turn to God’s Word. God speaks to us in and through His Word. As you go about your daily Bible reading ask God to illuminate His Word so that it speaks directly into your situation. Time and again God has given me direction with a verse or verses of Scripture. It’s as if they jump off the page and in their own way say, “This is My will. Now walk in it.”
Gather counsel and advice from mature believers. In Proverbs 10:13 we’re told that “wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning” and in Proverbs 10:31 it reinforces the fact that “the mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom.” So seek out Christians who will lovingly and honestly be committed to your spiritual well-being. As it says in Proverbs 11:14, “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisors make victory sure.”
Ask God to open or close the door. When we trust God with our lives He will be the doorkeeper. Revelation 3:7 says, “What he opens, no one can shut; and what he shuts, no one can open.” Thus we discern God’s will through His control of our circumstances. Time and again I’ve simply prayed, “Lord if this is what you want me to do then open the door so that I can do it. But if it isn’t, then shut the door so that I can move onto what you want me to do.”
Seek the inner witness of the Holy Spirit. When God reveals His will He always gives us peace of mind. The Spirit within us confirms the decision. Romans 8:6 says, “The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace.”
Act in faith. Don’t vacillate. With the above four principles in place, make sure that once you’ve discerned God’s will you act on what you know. Failure to do so is sin. As we’re reminded in James 1:5-8, “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.”
