JUST FLOATING AROUND!

Posted on February 21, 2023 by Pastor Randy

“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.  Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand.  When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.” When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, or he taught with real authority—quite unlike their teachers of religious law.

Matthew chapter 7, verses 24-29; from the New Living Translation (NLT)

I know that the Chinese Spy Balloon, excuse me, “weather balloon”, is old news. But The Spirit prompted me this morning to think about that episode. And what the Spirit said was provocatively simple. “Ever think about how many people are just like that balloon? Just floating around, without any real foundation for their life?” And do you know what my response was? I was heartbroken! Know why? Because The Father is heartbroken. How do I know this? Well, this parable that Jesus shared about the difference between being anchored to the Truth and just floating around. If you doubt my connection, then here’s another one:

When He saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

Matthew chapter 9, verse 36 (NLT)

We need to have our lives anchored to Truth; not just any truth, but THE TRUTH!  Contrary to popular opinion, we humans do not process THE TRUTH. Only God; and He has chosen to reveal THE TRUTH in what we call The Bible. We have to act upon The Word–by doing what The Word tells us to do. That’s the difference in the outcome of these 2 houses built by different builders. One had the foundation and the other didn’t. Now, progressive theology wants us to believe that the only thing that really matters is love. After all, that’s what Jesus did. Forget the rest, just love like Jesus. While this may sound good, it turns us into those weather balloons, just floating around being controlled by whatever the winds decide to do.

In that powerful Sermon On The Mount, Jesus said “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.  I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved.” Friends, we must be anchored to The Word, The Bible because that’s exactly what Jesus wants us to do. It’s The Bible guides us and sets the boundaries for our lives. Without ALL of God’s Word, we build houses that simply will not stand up to life as it really happens.

And for anyone in my former tribe, the United Methodist Church (UMC), who thinks they can #StayUMC and still be faithful to God–remember this parable from Jesus, Himself. The leadership of the UMC is building a house upon the sand. And if you stay inside that house, don’t be surprised when it collapses all around you. Here’s a final question for you to consider: Do you want to build your life around human thinking, thinking that is flawed by sin? Or do you want to build your life upon the Word of the Perfectly Holy God?

Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil. Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones.

Proverbs chapter 3, verses 7 and 8 (NLT)

The Deep Cost of Sin

… So that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

Romans 6:6

Christian, why would you play with sin? Has it not cost you enough already? Burnt child, will you play with the fire? What! When you have already been between the jaws of the lion, will you step a second time into his den? Have you not had enough of the old serpent? Did he not poison all your veins once, and will you play at the cobra’s den and put your hand in the dragon’s lair a second time?

Do not be so mad, so foolish! Did sin ever yield you real pleasure? Did you find solid satisfaction in it? If so, go back to your old drudgery, and wear the chain again, if it delights you. But inasmuch as sin never gave you what it promised to bestow but deluded you with lies, do not be snared by the old fowler: Be free, and let the memory of your enslavement prevent you from entering the net again!

It is contrary to the designs of eternal love, which are all focused on your purity and holiness; therefore do not run counter to the purposes of your Lord.

Another thought should restrain you from sin. Christians can never sin cheaply; they pay a heavy price for iniquity. Transgression destroys peace of mind, obscures fellowship with Jesus, hinders prayer, brings darkness over the soul; therefore do not be the serf and slave of sin.

There is still a higher argument: Each time you serve sin you are “crucifying once again the Son of God . . . and holding him up to contempt.”1 Can you bear that thought? If you have fallen into any special sin during this day, it may be that my Master has sent this admonition this evening to bring you back before you have wandered very far. Turn to Jesus afresh. He has not forgotten His love for you; His grace is still the same. With weeping and repentance, come to His footstool, and you shall be reunited in His love; you will be set upon a rock again, and your goings shall be established.

  1. Hebrews 6:6

QUESTION

What is the biblical doctrine of illumination?

ANSWER

Simply put, illumination in the spiritual sense is “turning on the light” of understanding in some area. Throughout the ages, people in every culture and religion have claimed some kind of revelation or enlightenment from God (whether true or not). When that enlightenment deals with new knowledge or future things, we call it prophecy. When that enlightenment deals with understanding and applying knowledge already given, we call it illumination. Regarding illumination of the latter type, the question arises, “How does God do it?”

The most basic level of enlightenment is the knowledge of sin, and without that knowledge, everything else is pointless. Psalm 18:28 says, “You, O LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.” Psalm 119, which is the longest chapter in the Bible, is a song about God’s Word. In verse 130, it says “The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” This verse establishes the basic method of God’s illumination. When God’s Word enters the heart of a person, it gives light and understanding to them. For this reason, we are repeatedly told to study the Word of God. Psalm 119:11 says “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Verses 98 and 99 say “Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever with me. I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes.”

Regular study of the Word of God will give direction and understanding in the issues of life. This is the first method of God’s illumination and the starting point for us all. In Psalm 119 we also find another type of God’s illumination. Verse 18 says, “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.” These are not new revelations, but things which have been written and revealed long before, and just now understood by the reader (one of those “aha!” moments). Similarly, verse 73 says, “Your hands made me and formed me; give me understanding to learn your commands.” The plea is for personal understanding and application of God’s laws as they are studied by the individual. Fifteen times in this psalm, God is asked to teach or give understanding regarding His laws.

One passage that sometimes stirs controversy regarding illumination is John 14:26, “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” Jesus was speaking to His disciples in the upper room, giving them last instructions before His death. This special group of men was to be responsible for spreading the good news of Jesus Christ to the whole world. They had spent three and a half years with Him, watching His miracles and hearing His teachings. They would relay those things to the rest of the world, and would need God’s special help remembering those things accurately. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would teach them and remind them of what had been said, so they could give it to others (including the writing of the Gospels). This verse does not teach that the Spirit will do so with all believers (though there are other verses that speak of the Spirit’s illuminating work).

What is the Holy Spirit’s illuminating work in believers? Ephesians 1:17-18 tells us that the Spirit gives wisdom and revelation concerning Jesus Christ, and opens the eyes of understanding so we can know God’s purposes in our lives. In 1 Corinthians 2:10-13, God has revealed His plans for us by His Spirit, who teaches us spiritual things. The context here points to the Word of God as that which has been revealed. The Spirit of God will always point us to the Word of God for our instruction. As Jesus told His disciples in John 16:12-15, the Spirit simply repeats what the Father and the Son have already said. This repetition helps us remember and fully hear what God has already told us. Sometimes we have to hear things several times before we actually hear them. That’s where the Spirit comes in.

One thing that is sometimes overlooked in the discussion of illumination is the purpose of it. To hear some arguments, it would seem that the whole purpose of illumination is an accurate and academic understanding of God’s Word. There is no question that God desires us to accurately understand what He has given us. Words have meaning, and we must pay attention to the details in those words. If, however, we stop there, we simply have an academic understanding of facts or philosophies, which do no one any good.

Going back to Psalm 119, we find purpose statements connected with the illumination verses. “I will meditate on your wonders” (v. 27), “I will keep your law and obey it with all my heart” (v. 34), “that I may understand your statutes” (v. 125), “that I may live” (v. 144). The illumination always points to action. Why does God help us understand His Word? So we are able to live in its light. First John 1:6 challenges us, “If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.” We could paraphrase it to say, “If we say we’ve been enlightened, but still walk in the dark, we lie about understanding God’s Word.” The Spirit of God, who enlightens us to hear and understand God’s Word, then takes that knowledge and guides us in living it. Romans 8:14 says “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” The illuminating and leading work of the Holy Spirit in our lives is a confirmation that we are indeed children of God.

Loving Obedience

Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me.

John 14:21 NLT

Today’s Scripture & Insight :

John 14:15-21

During our wedding ceremony, our minister said to me, “Do you promise to love, honor, and obey your husband, until death do you part?” Glancing at my fiancé, I whispered, “Obey?” We’d built our relationship on love and respect—not blind obedience, as the vows seemed to suggest. My husband’s father captured on film that wide-eyed moment when I processed the word obey and said, “I do.”

Over the years, God has shown me that my resistance to the word obey had nothing to do with the incredibly complex relationship between a husband and wife. I’d understood obey to mean “subjugated” or “forced submission,” which Scripture doesn’t support. Rather, the word obey in the Bible expresses the many ways we can love God. As my husband and I celebrate thirty years of marriage, through the power of the Holy Spirit we’re still learning to love Jesus and each other.

When Jesus said, “If you love me, obey my commandments” (John 14:15 NLT), He showed us that obedience to the Scriptures would be the result of an ongoing loving and intimate relationship with Him (vv. 16-21).

Jesus’ love is selfless, unconditional, and never forceful or abusive. As we follow and honor Him in all our relationships, the Holy Spirit can help us see obedience to Him as a wise and loving act of trust and worship.

By:  Xochitl Dixon

Reflect & Pray

How does seeing obedience to God as an act of love and trust change your view of His desire for obedience? How has God proven that you can trust Him?

Dear Jesus, please help me love You and others through obedience to the Scriptures.

Fight the Good Fight: June 2024 Scripture Writing Plan

May 28, 2024Elihu

Mark Twain wrote, “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” In the fight to remain faithful and share the saving truth of the gospel, you must not be intimidated by the strength or size of the enemy (Satan). It may seem like everyone is in his court and on his team. The truth is, the Lord who lives and works within us is far mightier than the enemy (1 John 4.4). It’s up to us to keep working for Him and relying on Him.

There are five aspects of “Fighting the Good Fight” which we will focus on throughout the month of June:

  1. Be Aware. The danger from Satan is real. When you decide to follow Jesus, Satan seeks to demolish your faith and derail your efforts to share the gospel. In the U.S., where there’s still a large group of people who identify as Christians, it’s easy to slip into complacency. Be on guard!

  2. Trust the Trainer. God trains and equips you to succeed in this battleground, but you have to trust Him. He promised never to leave you or forsake you (Hebrews 13.5). As we studied last month, Jesus promised to be with us always. You are not alone and you are not unarmed; you just have to take up the armor and trust in His strength.

  3. Stand Firm.Under threat, the temptation is to yield to what seems to be the stronger power. Do not yield to evil. In Jesus, you stand on solid ground. For this section, we’ll be looking at Nehemiah and the countrymen who worked with him to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. They could have abandoned the work, but they stayed the course. Let’s imitate that example of dedication and readiness.

  4. Fight. For the sake of your soul, you must be prepared to engage the enemy. If you fail to resist the devil, you will lose. Just remember, you are not alone on the battlefield, nor does success depend solely on you. If you engage with prayer, armed with what God has supplied, He will fight with you and for you.

  5. Conquer. This fight is not a single battle, but a string of battles. You must endure to the finish line. God has a victory crown waiting for you at the end.

What God calls you to do is worthwhile. He calls you to love Him with your whole heart, to love your neighbor as yourself, and to share the truth. You will face resistance, but it is a worthy fight!

I hope you’ll join us this month as we copy scriptures about fighting the good fight against evil.

Empathy is Christlike

“Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.”                 Romans 12:15, ESV.

ROMANS 12:19-21

Empathy can be defined as follows, “Empathy is the ability to emotionally understand what other people feel, see things from their point of view, and imagine yourself in their place. Essentially, it is putting yourself in someone else’s position and feeling what they are feeling.” Empathy also seems to be sorely lacking these days and times. It looks as if the opposite is true. In large part, people only can see any given situation from their point of view. If it is not suitable for us, it just is not good!

As I read through the Book of Romans, I am once again convicted of my many shortcomings in dealing with others. As I’ve said before, this issue is important to God because he inspired the Apostle Paul to write about how we should deal with our fellow Christians and those in the world.

There are compelling reasons why Christians should practice empathy in their lives and interactions. The first is a divine command. If God inspired a man to write this down in a book for us to read, it is His explicit instruction to us. This should guide and support us in our efforts to empathize with others.

The second good reason Christians should practice empathy for others is because empathy is a Christ-like trait. Friends, that is one of our mandates as we live our lives here on earth; we are to strive in the process of lifelong sanctification, to become more like our Lord Jesus Christ. Further, Jesus, our Lord, was certainly empathetic to others. Read this from the Book of Hebrews: “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin” Hebrews 4:15

How can we put empathy into action? It is pretty easy. The next time someone is in your face, seemingly behaving unreasonably, try something besides getting back in their face. They may be completely unreasonable; on the other hand, there might be what a court would call mitigating circumstances. Maybe they were just fired from their job or got lousy health or financial news. Try to think how YOU might act out in similar circumstances. Friends, then you might find it easier to not return like for like in the face of confrontation. That is what Jesus would do!

Pull the Weeds of Worry

[They hear] the word, but the worries of this life . . . choke the word.

Matthew 13:22

Today’s Scripture & Insight :

Matthew 13:3-8, 18-23

After burying a few seeds in a planter in my backyard, I waited to see the results. Reading that the seeds would sprout within ten to fourteen days, I checked often as I watered the soil. Soon I saw a few green leaves pushing their way out of the soil. But my bubble burst quickly when my husband told me those were weeds. He encouraged me to pull them quickly so that they wouldn’t choke the plants I was trying to grow.

Jesus also told of the importance of dealing with intruders that can impede our spiritual growth. He explained a portion of His parable this way: when a sower cast his seeds, some “fell among thorns . . . and choked the plants” (Matthew 13:7). Thorns, or weeds, will do just that to plants—stop their growth (v. 22). And worry will surely stunt our spiritual growth.

Reading Scripture and praying are great ways to grow our faith, but I’ve found I need to watch out for the thorns of worry. They’ll “choke” the good word that has been planted in me, making me focus on what could go wrong.

The fruit of the Spirit, found in Scripture, includes such things as love, joy, and peace (Galatians 5:22). But in order for us to bear that fruit, in God’s strength we need to pull any weeds of doubt or worry that may distract us and cause us to focus on anything other than Him.

By:  Katara Patton

Reflect & Pray

How is God helping you grow the seeds He’s planted within you? How can you pull the weeds of worry?

Dear heavenly Father, please remind me to pull weeds often, discarding worry and deceitful thoughts so I may grow and bear fruit in You.

“No Need to Worry” 5/29/2024 Written by Dawn Ivey for “Drawing closer to Christ”

Philippians 4:6-7 Bible Verse Sign

No Need to Worry

Philippians 4:6-7 NLT, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

These are verses that are familiar to many of us. And they’ve been on my mind quite a bit over the last week. As we all know, life can be tough and gives us many reasons to worry. However, God is giving us another option. He invites us to choose to be thankful and present our worries to Him in exchange for His peace.

I am convinced that choosing not to worry takes some intentional effort. Even though we may not want to worry, worry often consumes us and we find ourselves struggling to trust God. Trusting God can be especially hard when we do not see immediate answers to our prayers. But nevertheless, we have a choice. Even when we do not see the immediate answers we hoped to see, we can still open our hearts to receive God’s peace.

Since choosing not to worry takes effort, then prayer is an essential first step. No matter where we are or what we are doing we can whisper a prayer to God. We can repent for not giving God our worries in the specific situation (repentance refreshes us, Acts 3:19-21) and then we can ask Him for His help not to worry. It is such a blessing that He is always willing to help us do the things He instructs us to do. We can also pray for discernment and wisdom in our situation and God will show us what He wants us to know or do. And through all of this, we get to receive His peace as He guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Through these verses in Philippians, God is inviting us to relinquish control of people and situations and trust Him. Trust His goodness, trust His justice, trust His mercy, trust His provision, trust His faithfulness, and trust His love.

God is a good Father, who wants the best for us. His desire is for us to walk in His perfect peace. I pray that we will quickly pray and learn to receive His peace, no matter what we are facing.

Isaiah 26:3-4, ”You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.”

“Conviction or a Guilt-Trip?” 5/28/2024 Written by Beth Andrews for “Deeper Roots”

Conviction or a Guilt-Trip?

POSTED ON MAY 21, 2024 BY BETH ANDREWS

Sun Tzu, a Chinese general, military strategist, and philosopher in the early 6th Century wrote the classic, “The Art of War,” From which came the phrase “Know thine enemy.” The full quote is:

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
― Sun Tzu, The Art of War

Paul cautioned believers with similar words saying that Satan will not outwit us if we are aware of his schemes (2 Corinthians 2:11 paraphrased). We need to know our enemy to the degree that we recognize his evil hand.

One of Satan’s favorite schemes goes like this: he presents a temptation, dangling the carrot of pleasure or power or wealth before us, enticing us until we bite. And as soon as we do he changes his tactic from temptation to condemnation. “Look at you! You call yourself a Christian? God is disgusted with you! He will never love you after what you’ve done!” Pretty soon we’re crying, “God has found fault with me” (Job 33:10).

You and I need to know the difference between Satan’s guilt trips and the Spirit’s conviction. When the Spirit speaks to us about our sin he does so with the goal of restoration. Conviction from the Holy Spirit produces “godly sorrow [which] brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret. But Satan’s accusations bring “worldly sorrow [that] brings death” (2 Cor 7:9-10).

Satan wants to tear you down and bury you under a load of shame. The Spirit wants to turn your heart away from sin and back to the One who loves you – even when you sin.

Here’s the key to recognizing one from the other. Satan’s attacks turn our attention to ourselves. The Spirit will call you out but He will always turn your attention to God and His mercy, forgiveness, and grace. And His high and holy calling on your life.

In heaven, Satan is called “the accuser of [God’s people], who accuses them before our God day and night” (Rev 12:10). But God’s not buying it. And neither should you. If you are in Christ, God sees His Son – not your sin – when He looks at you. Beloved, take His Word for it.

To Everyone Who Has ….

SEPTEMBER 29, 2023BRM7

Bill Rudge

To everyone who has been despised, rejected, humiliated, or persecuted: Jesus Christ was detested, spurned, spit upon, mocked, ridiculed, humiliated, and persecuted.

To everyone who has had a rough upbringing: Jesus was born in a cave in Bethlehem and raised in the obscure town of Nazareth about which Nathaniel said to Philip, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” (John 1:46).

To everyone who has been betrayed or abandoned: Jesus was betrayed by Judas, rejected by Peter (denying that he even knew Him) and abandoned by all His disciples when He needed them the most.

To everyone who has been bullied, abused, molested, raped, tortured or murdered: Jesus was abused, brutally beaten, tortured, and murdered.

To everyone who has ever been gossiped about, maligned, undermined, or had lies spread about them: Jesus was the victim of malicious lies, gossip, treachery, and treason.

To everyone who has felt lonely, alienated, or misunderstood: Jesus experienced loneliness, and alienation, and was frequently misunderstood by the religious leaders and, at times, even His disciples. Herod wanted to kill Him, Pilate washed his hands of Him, religious leaders envied Him, His family thought He had lost His mind, His fellow Israelites wanted to stone Him, the crowds shouted for His crucifixion, and Thomas doubted Him.

To everyone who has been tempted, tested, or experienced trials and tribulations: Jesus faced temptation, testing, trials, and tribulations of incomprehensible proportions and so is able to help us through our own temptations, testing, trials, and tribulations.

To everyone who has sinned, failed, or given up: Jesus, who never did, is gracious to offer forgiveness and restoration to those who repent and to strengthen those who persevere.

To everyone who has bullied others, acted immorally, or been a murderer, gossip, liar, or thief; you are a sinner – we all are. Jesus was none of these. He was perfect and sinless, yet He died for you and me. He obeyed God’s will in every aspect. Only through Him can we receive forgiveness and pardon from God for all the sins we have committed and gain access to God’s eternal kingdom of righteousness, peace, and joy.

To everyone who has given up wealth, fame, prestige, or family for Jesus Christ: realize that Jesus left His Father and the glory of Heaven to purchase our salvation. He will provide us an eternal inheritance beyond comprehension!

Jesus is Who everyone needs. Believe in Him as the Messiah; receive Him as your Savior; and live for Him as your Lord!
