Who Reigns in Your Life

Posted on October 14, 2024 by Beth Andrews

It is human nature to worship something or someone. We were created with a spirit that yearns to connect with and worship our Creator. Bill Bright, the founder of Campus Crusade for Christ International loosely paraphrased the 17th Century philosopher Blaze Pasquel when He wrote: “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of every man which cannot be filled by any created thing, but only by God the Creator, made known through Jesus Christ.” Pasquel called it “a helpless craving” for what was meant to be. life.

Unfortunately, men try to gratify this craving with things other than God. They seek to fill the void with “empty water” and other things – and people – that can never satisfy. They turn to the things that flesh craves or the things that their sin-sick minds and wicked hearts tell them they need. And the enemy of man’s soul – the devil himself – parades alternatives to God and weak humans grab onto those thinking they will finally be satiated. Thousands of years of human nature – down to you and me – prove that our soul longs to be at one with our source of life.

The point is whatever we try to fill that space with becomes a thing we worship. It becomes lord over us in every way. We will always bow down to the lord of our life.

Jesus Christ is the Lord of my life. He is my sovereign. All my allegiance is His. But more importantly, Jesus Christ is Lord. Period. Whether I bow the knee to Him or not, He is still Lord. My devotion does not make Him Lord and my denial of Him would not make Him less than Lord. He will rule and reign because He is Lord. And yet – He allows me the option. He does not force me to acknowledge His Lordship as so many human rulers do.

Because my response to Him doesn’t threaten His position. He is Lord with me or without me. But He invites me into that intimate relationship, and I submit to Him because of His divine nature and His overwhelming love. There are times when I wrestle with lesser things – including myself – that want to take His place, but nothing – including myself – ever can.

Because His place is not mine to give away. All “gods” are only pretenders to His throne. Because Jesus is Lord.

Proverbs 15 1 by Scripture on the Walls Wall Art

Written by Louis Mize, a good friend  @  https://www.facebook.com/louis.mize

“A Friend for Eternity”

He that covers a transgression seeks love, but he that repeats a matter separates very friends.

Proverbs 17:7

Some people love to kindle fires. But the kind of fire they start is the bad kind of fire. They are those fires that destroy friendships and unity. I call them the devil’s arsonists.

There is another kind of person who kindles fires. They start the good fires in life, those that are beneficial and not harmful to man. Those fires keep a person warm and comfortable and help melt cold, hard, and calloused hearts.

The Lord Jesus Christ is that FRIEND the Bible tells us of who sticks closer than a brother. He is that ONE who truly seeks love. He has proven it by shedding His precious, sinless blood, that cleans and covers all our sins. And He is that friend who desires that people live together in unity and peace.

This morning, I thanked God for showing and seeking true love. And I thank Him that He is that friend who wipes away all our sins and transgressions and chooses to remember them NO MORE, as we approach His throne of mercy, grace, and forgiveness.

Help us Lord, to be that kind of person who seeks love, and chooses never to repeat a matter that would separate friends, instead desiring to be a true friend to those who God may place in our path. In Jesus Name we pray. Amen

November 7

A Good Witness

And you will be my witnesses.

Acts 1:8

In order to learn how to discharge your duty as a witness for Christ, look at His example. He is always witnessing—by the well of Samaria or in the temple of Jerusalem; by the sea of Galilee or on the mountainside. He is witnessing day and night; His mighty prayers are as vocal to God as His daily services. He witnesses under all circumstances. Scribes and Pharisees cannot shut His mouth; even before Pilate He witnesses a good confession. He witnesses so clearly and distinctly that there is no mistake in understanding Him. Christian, make your life a clear testimony. Be like the stream in which you can see every stone at the bottom—not like a muddy creek where you can only see the surface, but clear and transparent, so that your heart’s love for God and man may be visible to all. You need not say, “I am true”; be true. Do not boast of integrity, but be upright. Then your testimony will be such that men cannot help seeing it. Never, on account of fear of feeble man, restrain your witness. Your lips have been warmed with a coal from off the altar; let them speak as heaven-touched lips should do. “In the morning sow your seed, and at evening withhold not your hand.”1

Do not watch the clouds or consult the wind; in season and out of season witness for the Savior, and if it transpires that for Christ’s sake and the Gospel’s you must endure suffering in any shape, do not shrink, but rejoice in the honor conferred upon you, that you are counted worthy to suffer with your Lord. And find joy also in this—that your sufferings, your losses, and persecutions shall make you a platform from which with more vigor and with greater power you will witness for Christ Jesus. Study your great example, and be filled with His Spirit. Remember that you need much teaching, much upholding, much grace, and much humility if your witnessing is to be to your Master’s glory.

Reading: Psalm 36:5-9

Your love, LORD, reaches to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the highest mountains,
your justice like the great deep.
You, LORD, preserve both people and animals.
How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!
People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They feast on the abundance of your house;
you give them drink from your river of delights.
For with you is the fountain of life;
in your light we see light
 (NIV). *

Psalm 87_7

Reflection
As mentioned in my previous post, Psalm 36 is a psalm of contrasts. David compares the wickedness of man with the amazing goodness of God. The opening portion of Psalm 36 touches on the depravity of man. In today’s reading, we behold the awesome love and kindness of God.

Your love, LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, your justice like the great deep (5-6).

The beautiful poetry of those words sends me off on a Rocky Mountain high.

God’s love is reflected in the beauty of his creation. He nestled us into a world of incredible beauty and variety. From the grandeur of the mountains to the minute sea fauna, God is there—sustaining all—reigning over all. You, LORD, preserve both people and animals. How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! (v. 7).

God’s unfailing love stands in sharp contrast to man’s rapacious capacity for hate and destruction. We glory in war, death, and bloodshed as though these are great accomplishments, when in fact they are a failure in love and forgiveness—the attributes of God. Yet despite these failures, God showers us with His love and goodness. People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights (v. 7-8).

It is worth noting that God is the source of the river of delights. Just as any good father enjoys bringing pleasure to his children, so too does our Heavenly Father delight in bringing joy to us. He is not stingy in His love, but overflowing with generosity, in many cases providing more than we can handle.

For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light (v.9). The LORD is the author and source of all life. “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day” (Genesis 1:31).

Only in Him and through Him do we see the light of day and the light of life. To God be praise forever more!

Response: LORD God, thank you, thank you, thank you for your great love and faithfulness to me. Let your light shine in me and through me today. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Your TurnHave you been drinking from God’s river of delights? List some things that bring you God-given joy.

Luke 4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

More Than Words

October 9, 2024

My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body. Proverbs 4:20-22 (NIV).

I have at least seventy Bibles and several versions downloaded on my computer – a tad more than the average North American home. Before you think of me as somewhat eccentric or such, allow me to point out that my collection of Bibles is probably not unusual, given that there are more than 900 English translations of the Bible, and my work involves Bible advocacy and encouraging Bible engagement. What is unusual, and for which I’ll gladly be labeled, is that I use some of my Bibles all of the time and others every now and again.

According to statistics collected by Gallup, the Barna Group, and others, while most of us own a Bible, most of us don’t read the Bible. Even though the Bible is readily available and 60% of us agree that it answers all or most of the basic questions of life, functionally the Bible is often little more than a shelf ornament. It is no exaggeration to say that while the Bible is in our homes, it’s rarely in our hands.

The lack of Bible engagement recently came into sharp focus when, during a presentation in an Evangelical Protestant church of about two hundred people, I asked the congregation to name the first book of the Bible. The first answer was, “The Old Testament.” My response was that the Old Testament is the collection of 39 books according to the Protestant canon and 46 or 47 books according to the Catholic canon which includes the Apocryphal books, and that I was looking for the name of the first book in the Old Testament. The second answer was, “The Book of Noah.” There is no such book, so I explained that while Noah is spoken about in the first book of the Bible the book is not named after him. Following a period of silence that was long enough to be embarrassing, another person tentatively raised their hand and asked, “Is it Genesis?” “Yes!” I replied with relief.

You may be surprised that it took three shots to get the answer to my question and even more surprised to hear that less than half of all Canadians can name the first book of the Bible, that more than 50% of people who regularly attend church will never read the Bible from cover to cover, that 12% think that Noah was married to Joan of Arc, that only 33% know who delivered the Sermon on the Mount (Billy Graham is a popular answer), and that 35% of “born again” Christians do not read the Bible at all.

All this to say; it’s high time for a new invitation to be extended to read an old book. Why? Because the Bible is more than words! I don’t say that lightly. While I admit my first few readings of the Bible were somewhat heavy going at times, occasionally boring, and more often than not raised more questions than answers, I’ve nonetheless come to the firm conclusion that the Bible is the Book of books, the most powerful story ever given to humanity – quite literally words of life … and much more. So why not pick it up, curl up in a comfy chair, and start by reading the first book – Genesis!

YOU MEAN THAT I’VE GOT TO BE THANKFUL TODAY? FOR WHAT?

Posted on November 24, 2022 by Pastor Randy

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

1 Thessalonians chapter 5, verse 18; from the New Living Translation (NLT)

In the craziness of what’s happening around us, in the pain deep inside us–it’s hard to think about being Thankful!  And it’s even harder to BE Thankful!  This morning, I was sitting on the front porch, listening to my Morning Worship playlist, and still–I was really struggling to BE Thankful.  Four years ago, my Mother died and this year my Daddy died.  And for the first time in my 66 years, I won’t be spending Thanksgiving Day with him.  For the first time, I won’t be in his home with the rest of the family for Thanksgiving Day.

Then the Tribe I’ve belonged to for those same 66 years has left me behind–and I am leaving them.  One more thing, I have good friends who long to leave this diseased United Methodist Church–but their congregations failed to garner enough votes to leave, are satisfied with the status quo, or simply chose not to think about leaving. Such is Thanksgiving Day, the twenty-fourth day of November 2022 for me. Can I be honest with you, the reader? It’s a struggle to be Thankful. Now don’t you dare tell me of all Jesus has done for me. I am aware of all He’s done for me. Still . . . I’m struggling right now.

Then good ol’ Paul tells me this morning these words: Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. Come on, Paul! Cut me some slack here! If you only had known what this morning feels like to me–surely you would have written this. What were you thinking when you wrote these words? Just now, the Holy Spirit leaned in and whispered, “Randy, that’s a great question! It’s the perfect question! Now answer your own question. This should be an easy one for you, after all. What was Paul thinking?”

I can’t speak for you, but there are moments when I despise how the Holy Spirit speaks to me. Why? Because He brings back to me the right perspective on life–even when it’s crazy. And even when it hurts. Sometimes I just want to be angry and wallow around in my pain. Lord knows I have plenty of reasons to do so! Maybe I’m the only who in this whole wide world who has ever felt this way. Back to that probing question from the Holy Spirit. What was Paul thinking?

My ESPN isn’t working this morning; all I can go by is what Paul went through–and how he responded to those difficult times. In one particular situation, Paul was desperate to get rid of what he called “a thorn in the flesh”. (You can read the passage here) Not once, not twice, but three times Paul wanted to get rid of it. And each time he asked God to remove it–God had the same answer: “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” Amazing, isn’t it? How is it that God always has an answer? And that His answer NEVER changes?

So, I will once again change my perspective. Notice I wrote “once again“; it’s not the first time, and it won’t be the last time–well, here on earth. Though I am angered at the chaos filling my “soon-to-be-former Tribe”, and though I am so sad not to be at Daddy’s house today–I Choose To Be Thankful! Not for what’s happening all around me and the things I’m feeling inside me–but for WHO is living inside me. And right now, I am experiencing His—His—trying to find another way to say it. But there’s really no other way to say it. I am experiencing His Amazing Grace! And my prayer for you is that today—-and every day, as far as that goes—-that you experience His Amazing Grace. It really is all I need. And it’s all you need.

The Spirit’s Applying Work

He will take what is mine and declare it to you.

John 16:15

There are times when all the promises and doctrines of the Bible are of no help unless a gracious hand applies them to us. We are thirsty but too faint to crawl to the water-brook. When a soldier is wounded in battle, it is of little use for him to know that there are those at the hospital who can bind up his wounds and medicines to ease all the pains that he now suffers: What he needs is to be carried there and to have the remedies applied. It is the same with our souls, and to meet this need there is one, even the Spirit of truth, who takes the things of Jesus and applies them to us.

Do not think that Christ has placed His joys on heavenly shelves so we may climb up and retrieve them for ourselves; rather He draws near and sheds His peace abroad in our hearts. Christian, if you are tonight struggling under deep distress, your Father does not give you promises and then leave you to draw them up from the Word like buckets from a well. The promises He has written in the Word He will write afresh on your heart. He will display His love to you and by His blessed Spirit dispel your cares and troubles.

Let it be known to you, if you mourn, that it is God’s prerogative to wipe every tear from the eyes of His people. The good Samaritan did not say, “Here is the wine, and here is the oil for you”; he actually poured in the oil and the wine. So Jesus not only gives you the sweet wine of His promise, but He holds the golden cup to your lips and pours the lifeblood into your mouth. The poor, sick, worn-out pilgrim is not merely strengthened to walk, but he is lifted up on eagles’ wings. Glorious Gospel that provides everything for the helpless, that draws near to us when we cannot reach it ourselves—it brings us grace before we seek grace! There is as much glory in the giving as in the gift. Happy people who have the Holy Spirit to bring Jesus to them!

Question

“Who is the Holy Spirit?”

who Holy Spiritaudio

Answer

There are many misconceptions about the identity of the Holy Spirit. Some view the Holy Spirit as a mystical force. Others see the Holy Spirit as an impersonal power that God makes available to followers of Christ. What does the Bible say about the identity of the Holy Spirit? Simply put, the Bible declares that the Holy Spirit is God. The Bible also tells us that the Holy Spirit is a divine person, a being with a mind, emotions, and a will.

The fact that the Holy Spirit is God is clearly seen in many Scriptures, including Acts 5:3-4. In these verses, Peter confronts Ananias about why he lied to the Holy Spirit and tells him that he had “not lied to men but to God.” It is a clear declaration that lying to the Holy Spirit is lying to God. We can also know that the Holy Spirit is God because He possesses the characteristics of God. For example, His omnipresence is seen in Psalm 139:7-8, “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.” Then in 1 Corinthians 2:10-11, we see the characteristic of omniscience in the Holy Spirit. “These are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.”

We can know that the Holy Spirit is indeed a divine person because He possesses a mind, emotions, and a will. The Holy Spirit thinks and knows (1 Corinthians 2:10). The Holy Spirit can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30). The Spirit intercedes for us (Romans 8:26-27). He makes decisions according to His will (1 Corinthians 12:7-11). The Holy Spirit is God, the third Person of the Trinity. As God, the Holy Spirit can truly function as the Comforter and Counselor Jesus promised He would be (John 14:162615:26).

Reckless and Careless

A fool is reckless and careless.

Proverbs 14:16 ESV

Today’s Scripture & Insight :

Proverbs 14:7-16

Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island, is a tidal island in England connected to the mainland by a narrow road. Twice a day, the sea covers the causeway. Signs alert visitors to the dangers of crossing during high tide. Yet, tourists regularly disregard the warnings and often end up sitting atop submerged cars or swimming to raised safety huts where they can be rescued. The tide is predictable, as sure as the rising sun. And warnings are everywhere; you can’t possibly miss them. Yet, as one writer described, Lindisfarne is “where the reckless try to outrace the tide.”

Proverbs tells us that it’s foolish to be “reckless and careless” (14:16 ESV). A reckless person has little regard for wisdom or wise counsel and doesn’t practice attentiveness or diligent care for others (vv. 7-8). Wisdom, however, slows us down to listen and ponder so that we’re not carried away by rash emotions or half-baked ideas (v. 16). Wisdom teaches us to ask good questions and consider the implications of our actions. While reckless people charge forward with little regard for relationships or consequences—or often truth—“prudent [people] give thought to their steps” (v. 15).

While we’ll sometimes need to act decisively or swiftly, we can resist recklessness. As we receive and practice God’s wisdom, He’ll give us the guidance we need when we need it.

Reflect & Pray

Where have you seen reckless living? How can you avoid living recklessly?

Dear God, we live in a reckless world. Please help me to be wise and live well.

Grateful for God’s Great Love: November 2024 Scripture Writing Plan

October 31, 2024Elihu

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His steadfast love endures forever.” (Psalm 118.1, ESV)

Because we live in a physical world and have physical needs, there is a tendency to focus on being grateful for our physical blessings. While it is good and fitting to be thankful for these things, it’s doubly important to remember our spiritual blessings. To have God as our Lord and Father is by far our greatest inheritance.

For the month of November, we’ll be writing through Psalm 118 and considering the goodness, mercy, and love of the Lord. It’s interesting that this Psalm is smack-dab between the shortest Psalm and the longest Psalm!

Depending on your translation, the phrase in verse 1 (which is repeated 4 additional times in the Psalm) may read:

  • “His love endures forever” (NIV)

  • “His lovingkindness is everlasting” (NASB)

  • “His mercy endures forever” (NKJV)

The Hebrew word used can be translated in various ways, and if you think about it, each word is true, and each reflects God’s goodness toward us. As you write out each verse in this Psalm, I encourage you to consider how God’s goodness is demonstrated towards His people.

I hope you’ll join us as we write out Psalm 118 this month! As always, I post regularly about our daily verses on Instagram (@elihuscorner) and Facebook. I am looking to make those posts more easily accessible, so if you have an additional social media platform which you prefer, drop a note in the comments below and I’ll investigate setting up an additional account.
