Gods group thoughts for 5/15/2012 “A Servant’s Heart”

John 8:31-32Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.  32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”  (NKJV)

As I sat in men’s Sunday school class the other day, I saw a video from a study on the Book of Mark, that was about Jesus’ teaching His own disciples how to be true disciples (Mark 10:35-45)… Throughout the 4 gospels we see numerous times where Jesus’ disciples just couldn’t grasp what Jesus was trying to teach them… Granted, they didn’t have the Holy Spirit living with-in them yet… Jesus promised them His Father would send them the Helper (the Holy Spirit) in His name, to teach them all things; and to bring back into their memory all that Jesus was trying to teach them in the 3+ years they spent learning from Him…John 14:26

The KJV version of this scripture refers to the Holy Spirit as “the Comforter”…John 14:26…  But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.  (KJV)   … But for me, the NKJV gives a more complete description of the Holy Spirit as a Helper, not just a Comforter, which God has given to all of His children…

Mark chapter 10 has Jesus finally getting His disciples together, to put a stop to their struggles on who amongst the 12 disciples was greatest… We see this teaching in at least 4 other places in the gospels… Matthew 18:1-4…&…Mark 9:33-35…&…Luke 9:46-48…&…Luke 22:24-27

In these 4 passages, Jesus is trying to explain to His disciples (and us) that they shouldn’t be thinking like the world thinks… In the world, everyone is constantly fighting to become “top dog”, so to speak…  It is all about themselves and their struggles to make it to the top…  Jesus teaches something entirely opposite of the worlds views…  Jesus teaches that in order to become first, His disciples (and us) must become a servant for others…  We see this being taught very clearly by Jesus in the following scripture…

Mark 10:42-45But Jesus called them to Himself and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. 44 And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”  (NKJV)

Jesus was the humble servant of His Father, who paid the ultimate price of servitude for His Father by dying on the cross; so that those who put their faith and trust in Him, (by understanding and obeying the gospel of Christ), could have eternal life in heaven…  But Jesus’ disciples, even after this better explanation of what it would take to become a true disciple of His, still didn’t grasp the idea of being last, in order to be first… Jesus was running out of time; so at Jesus’ last chance to teach His disciples this servant attitude, Jesus went about washing His disciples feet at what we know as “The Last Supper”, before Jesus was crucified on the cross…

The washing of feet in Jesus’ day, was done by the lowest in stature (sometimes a slave) of the owners household; and usually always done by a woman…  For Jesus to stoop to washing the feet of His disciples…well…it was just a mind boggling sight for Jesus’ disciples to understand…  They were shocked to see their Lord and Master belittling Himself before them… I must stop here, and continue tomorrow… But I have included a 4 minute video, and I pray all readers would spend the time to watch it…

Heavenly Father, help all of Your children understand what becoming a true servant of Christ means…  Help us to see that we must always put ourselves last in every situation; no matter how hard this may seem at the time… Help us Lord, to finally see through Jesus’ servant heart and actions…just how important becoming a servant in thoughts and deeds truly is, in order to become a disciple in Jesus’ eyes… I pray that You would open all eyes to see, and all minds to understand this most basic concept of what being a Christian, according to Jesus, really means… I pray for Your Word to complete Your perfect will for all of our lives…in Jesus’ most precious and holy name, and for His sake…Amen…
