Romans 8:15-16… For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” 16 The SpiritHimself bears witness with our spirit that wearechildren of God, (NKJV)
When God graces the sinner with salvation, He fills His new redeemed child with the Holy Spirit, to live with-in them as their lifelong Helper…John 14:26… When the true disciple of Jesus Christ abides in the Word of God, they will learn all about what God the Father wants from them, to be pleasing in His sight… Jesus tells us that abiding in His Word, will allow His disciple to “know the truth, and the truth shall make you free”, in…John 8:31-32… (See note at the end for more on God’s saving grace, that will set the sinner free from Satan’s bonds of sin and shame)
The opening scripture (penned by the apostle Paul) teaches us that we should not fear, if we have received the Holy Spirit…and that the Holy Spirit “Himself bears witness with our spirit that wearechildren of God”… In my last writing, I wrote about the whooping the Lord gave me, when I failed to follow the Holy Spirit’s urging to share the gospel of Christ with my neighbor… You can read about this pivotal moment in my life, by typing 3/14/2014 into the search window @ www.Godsmanforever.com
Can you hear the Holy Spirit speaking to you on a regular basis ?? I’m not just talking about your conscience speaking to you… I thank the Lord that every human being is given a conscience by God, to help them know right from wrong… I’m speaking of the living God residing with-in His redeemed children (Christ in us…Colossians 1:27), that should be speaking to us loud and clear, if we are filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18-20)… This fullness of the Holy Spirit is also known as Walking in the Spirit, in…Galatians 5:16…
In one of my favorite pieces of scripture (Ephesians 3:16-20), the apostle Paul calls walking with the Lord as a Spirit filled Christian, being “filled with all the fullness of God” (V 19)…describing the Christian who, as Paul pens in V17, is grounded and rooted in the love of Christ… And the most important verse in this scripture, explaining the love of Christ which passes our mortal knowledge (V19), especially for the younger generation…is the last verse…
Ephesians 3:20… 20 Now to Him who is able to doexceedinglyabundantlyaboveallthat we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, (NKJV) This “power that works in us”, is the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit, that is capable of opening doors, and doing miraculous things for God’s children, more than we could ever “ask or think” in our own mortal strength…
But sadly, many young Christians make choices about some of life’s most important decisions, like…where to go to college…deciding what they want to become in life…and finding the right mate to become their spouse…without seeking help and guidance from the Lord first…
You say you’re a Christian and you don’t hear the Holy Spirit urging you all the time to make godly decisions ?? Based upon everything I have personally learned the hard way (by taking back control from the Holy Spirit in my own life)…and on God’s inerrant Word…I believe a Christian will be grieving the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30) by living in unrepentant sin… Taking back control from the Holy Spirit like I did…or living with someone in a same sex or heterosexual relationship, outside of marriage…would surely be prime examples of grieving the Holy Spirit… Any sin not confessed, repented of, and turned from (1 John 1:9) will grieve the Holy Spirit…and break the sweet fellowship that an otherwise Spirit filled Christian walking with the Lord will enjoy…
I am reminded of a sermon preached by the Rev. C. H. Spurgeon back in 1859, which was titled… “Grieving the Holy Spirit”… In part 3 of this sermon, Rev Spurgeon goes into detail about what grieves the Holy Spirit…and the sorry state the Christian will find themselves in…if the Holy Spirit is grieved to the point where He takes a back seat for a time…
Here is a short piece from Rev. Spurgeon’s sermon…and I quote… “But at last, his grief becomes so excessive, that he says, “I will suspend my operations; I will begone; I will leave life behind me, but my own actual presence I will take away. And when the Spirit of God goes away from the soul and suspends all his operations what a miserable state we are in. He suspends his instructions; we read the word, we cannot understand it; we go to our commentaries, they cannot tell us the meaning; we fall on our knees and ask to be taught, but we get no answer, we learn nothing. He suspends his comfort;”
This powerful sermon is one that should be read by any Christian who finds themselves without joy…without the God given peace they should be experiencing…and without the absolute presence of the Holy Spirit speaking to them, to confirm that they are indeed a child of God…as the opening scripture alludes to… Here is the link to this possible life changing sermon, that I urge every reader to spend the time reading… http://www.spurgeon.org/sermons/0278.htm
You say you’re a Christian, but you don’t have the time ?? Read what Rev. Spurgeon has to say about this, in his sermon… “You have no time for prayer, but the Spirit sees you very active about worldly things, and having many hours to spare for relaxation and amusement. And then he is grieved because he sees that you love worldly things better than you love him.”…
My friends, if we call ourselves Christians…we should make the time to live a life that will be pleasing to the Lord… I spent a day writing about what Jesus Himself tells us we must do, to be true disciples of Christ… Go to www.Godsmanforever.com and type 11/18/2013 into the search window…
Heavenly Father, I pray that You would draw any unredeemed sinner to Yourself (John 6:44), and that Your Word would open the eyes and ears of those who can’t hear, or won’t listen to the Holy Spirit speaking to them…to help guide and direct them day in and day out… I pray for this fullness of Christ, in all of our lives…in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…
Blessings in Christ, bruce r mills
