I really love that word, it’s a Greek transliteration that eventually gave us the word “eucharist.” Eucharistia itself is a transliteration of the Hebrew berekah. All these words down through time and translation basically mean “thankfulness.”
“Eucharist” is also a word sometimes used for the Lord’s supper, for Holy Communion.
Thankfulness is a bit more complicated than it seems at first glance because it has to do with receiving a blessing or declaring a blessing, or being a blessing. It’s not the more modern, more casual “thank you” that we often use when navigating doorways or collecting our change. That is certainly a good start, I am just saying “thankfulness” is more like dodging an accident on the freeway, realizing your life was just spared through no fault of your own, and being rendered speechless, rather than having someone hand you a cup of coffee you’ve just purchased.
We need a whole lot more “thank yous” in the world, it’s just kind of a shame that it’s become such an economic exchange, such a transaction. It’s almost as if “thank you” must be earned or doled out sparingly, like a tip based on someone’s performance.
Thankfulness is actually, “the giving of thanks.” We aren’t really “giving” anything when our thankfulness is made like an exchange, a transaction. I did once watch some people who did not even get their coffee, who were forced to wait patiently while this young man who clearly had no idea what he was doing, tried to make drinks. They just hit him with grace, praise gratitude, with cheerfulness, and a couple of people who walked out actually first put a tip in his jar as encouragement. It was a sight to behold I tell ya, people being decent, thankfulness a state of being rather than a reward for having gotten what I wanted.
I was quite impressed, it was an unforgettable experience because being decent and thankful before you’ve even had your coffee is downright miraculous…
I genuinely do believe that 99% of what afflicts us in the world, in this country, and often within the church herself, is this scarcity of Eucharistia, this inability to perceive thankfulness as a state of being rather than an exchange or transaction.
I really enjoy Revelation 7:12 where the angels are worshiping around the throne and they say,
“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom,
Thanksgiving and honor and power and might,
Be to our God forever and ever.
Amen.”
Wisdom and thanksgiving are directly related to power and might and we can tap right into that at any time by just hitting everything we encounter with grace and thankfulness, with Eucharistia.
