The Effective Prayer: Scripture Writing Plan October 2023

September 30, 2023Elihu

“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”

James 5.16, ESV

Every follower of Christ knows prayer is an important facet of their life, but to what extent do you and I apply that knowledge? How often do we come before the throne of God, not only to make petition, but to also praise Him and thank Him for all He has done? Are we consistently praying like the prophet Daniel, or do we only call upon Him in times of distress?

The Old and New Testaments contain many of the prayers of “righteous people.” It is worth our time to consider how they prayed. For October, we will be writing out scriptures containing some of the prayers recorded in the Old Testament. Lord willing, we will turn our attention to prayers in the New Testament in November. As you copy out these prayers, I encourage you to do the following:

  1. Consider the context of the prayer. Who is praying? What has happened that has caused them to come before God in prayer in this passage?
  2. Consider the tone of the prayer. How can you tell if the person praying is demonstrating humility?
  3. Consider the elements of the prayer. What does this person include in their prayer? Do they honor God? Seek forgiveness?
  4. Consider the outcome of the prayer. What is the result? Does God respond to their prayer in some way?

I hope that as you meditate on these prayers, you are encouraged to continue praying in your own daily walk with Christ. It’s tempting at times to slip into the mistaken belief that our prayers really don’t make a difference. As life gets hectic, there is also a tendency to put prayer on the back burner. Prayer is our communication with the Father; without communication, it’s tough to have a strong relationship.
