God is My Refuge: January 2024 Scripture Writing Plan

Every so often, we get raging thunderstorms in Texas. Instead of a light sheet of rain, it’s as if someone decided to dump a river over a few square miles in 10 minutes. Wind and hail tear things to pieces. Lightning shoots across the sky. Thunder roars.
When such a storm strikes, you don’t want to be outside. Even in a car, it sounds like someone is trying to break your windows.
Even though such storms are brief, they can feel endless (just ask my dog). Even though I have experienced many storms, I always feel unsettled when they occur because I never know how damaging that particular one will be. Sometimes there is no damage at all, while at other times, an entire neighborhood requires home and car repairs. The trials we endure in life are a bit like these storms–overwhelming, dangerous, and potentially destructive.
Where do you go when life is overwhelming?
To whom do you take your deepest fears?
What do you do when your closest friends or family cannot or will not help you?
People will disappoint you; safety nets will fail you; But God will never leave you.
As we enter another new year, let’s take time to focus on the reliability of God in this unreliable world. This month, we will write through passages about God being our refuge. If you have a paper planner, you could add your favorite passages in the margin of each upcoming month to remind you to stay in the shelter of His refuge each day. I hope you will join us as we write down these scriptures this month. As usual, I try to reflect on each day’s passage on Facebook and Instagram (@elihuscorner). Let’s be intentional about choosing the Lord not only when we need help, but also in times of great joy. May he always be our refuge and dwelling place, as Moses wrote:
“There is no one like the God of Jeshurun,
who rides across the heavens to help you
and on the clouds in his majesty.
The eternal God is your refuge,
and underneath are the everlasting arms.“Deuteronomy 33.26-27, NIV
