AULD LANG SYNE – ONCE UPON A TIME

Posted on December 31, 2024 by atimetoshare.me

It’s time to kick out the old and welcome the new. As we approach the end of another year, we tend to look back at all the icky stuff that happened during that time. We hope that a new beginning will bring better things and give us hope for the future. In fact, we sing about that in the old traditional song, “Auld Lang Syne,” which literally means times long past or once upon a time. Sounds like a fairy tale to me. I guess when you’ve spent almost 83 years on this planet, you tend to have some skepticism regarding that statement. We can start out with high hopes for happily ever after, but life gets in the way. People age – their health begins to fail – and their giant goals of the past have dwindled into fleeting memories. The experiences of turning the calendar from December 31st to January 1st make you realize that all those resolutions have little merit. All your dreams of starting a new adventure have slipped away and you’re just happy to be alive.

I don’t by any means want you to think I’m being negative here, but realistically, we all go through these thoughts at the end of one year and the beginning of another. There may have been monumental changes in the past twelve months. Weddings, new birth, healthy children, good jobs, but at the same time, you may be trying to say goodbye to the ugliness of the past year. The deaths, loss of employment, failing health, and changes that you have no control over can soon accumulate into a giant ball of depression and anxiety.

Saying goodbye to 2024 will be easier for some than others. Saying hello to 2025 is looking forward with hope and new challenges. Life goes on and we all will face both. When you start a new year, you may think things are going to be so much better. You set goals that often are unachievable. Still without a plan we might wind up with a repeat of the past year.

I have discovered that it’s necessary for us to make plans for the future, but it’s also necessary to surrender to God’s plan for our lives. He laid those plans out on the drawing board before we ever came to be. He knows what’s on the horizon for us. He hears our prayers. He is always with us. He keeps His promises. He lifts us up when we are down. He has provided a perfect life and place for us after death. We can depend on Him. Get to know Him if you already don’t. Even when we think we have all the answers, we don’t. Trusting in the omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent God will lead you into a new year, a new month, a new day, and every second of your lie.

Your once upon a time-begins now. May God bless you as you continue this journey on earth and look forward to a life in heaven. Happy New Year!

Take Refuge in the Lord-Psalms 37

Psalm 37 is my favorite Psalm. I have been meditating on it over the last couple of weeks and have found comfort in its words. So I am sharing it with you and I hope it brings you comfort also. It encourages us to remember that God sees evil and injustice (which are two things we see a lot of nowadays). He will deal with wrongdoing, so we do not need to worry. It also reminds us that refraining from anger, delighting in the Lord, and trusting Him, leads to blessings.

The final two verses, 39 and 40, ensure us the Lord is our Helper and He saves those who take refuge in Him. Enjoy reading Psalm 37 and have a blessed week.

Psalms 37 NIV

1 Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong;

2 for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away.

3 Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.

4 Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this:

6 He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.

7 Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.

8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil.

9 For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land.

10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found.

11 But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.

12 The wicked plot against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them;

13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming.

14 The wicked draw the sword and bend the bow to bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose ways are upright.

15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts, and their bows will be broken.

16 Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked;

17 for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous.

18 The blameless spend their days under the LORD’s care, and their inheritance will endure forever.

19 In times of disaster they will not wither; in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.

20 But the wicked will perish: Though the LORD’s enemies are like the flowers of the field, they will be consumed, they will go up in smoke.

21 The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously;

22 those the LORD blesses will inherit the land, but those he curses will be destroyed.

23 The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him;

24 though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.

25 I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.

26 They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be a blessing.

27 Turn from evil and do good; then you will dwell in the land forever.

28 For the LORD loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones. Wrongdoers will be completely destroyed ; the offspring of the wicked will perish.

29 The righteous will inherit the land and dwell in it forever.

30 The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom, and their tongues speak what is just.

31 The law of their God is in their hearts; their feet do not slip.

32 The wicked lie in wait for the righteous, intent on putting them to death;

33 but the LORD will not leave them in the power of the wicked or let them be condemned when brought to trial.

34 Hope in the LORD and keep his way. He will exalt you to inherit the land; when the wicked are destroyed, you will see it.

35 I have seen a wicked and ruthless man flourishing like a luxuriant native tree,

36 but he soon passed away and was no more; though I looked for him, he could not be found.

37 Consider the blameless, observe the upright; a future awaits those who seek peace.

38 But all sinners will be destroyed; there will be no future for the wicked.

39 The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble.

40 The LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.

Don’t Settle for Anything Less than Jesus

Posted on December 29, 2024 by Beth Andrews

With ten years of schooling, it feels like I live with my head in a book – and I do for the most part, but all study and no play makes me slightly crazy, so I have a “color-by-number” app on my phone that I play to break up the monotony of studying. It feeds my creative cravings and allows me to create something pretty. Plus, it is easy on my brain. Last night I was working on a picture that featured a lot of jewelry. As I added in the colors for the “gold” I noticed that the yellows and oranges were drab compared to the real thing. They did not have the metallic shine of genuine gold. The same was true for the colors used for the gemstones – they were dull compared to real rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. They fell far short of what they represented.

That’s what so many people count on in life – substitute colors for the genuine thing – for Jesus. Faith that is not rooted and established in Jesus Christ is just as dull and lifeless as those flat colors on the screen.

Biblical scholar Dr. Irwin Lutzer says that true faith is three-fold. “First it involves knowledge, the fact of Jesus’ death for sinners. Second, it means we assent to the truths of salvation; finally, it involves trust, the transferring of all of our confidence to Christ alone.”[1]

You and I don’t just need a belief system, we need faith – saving faith.

Saving faith recognizes our need for a Savior, confesses that Jesus’ death secured our salvation, and believes that through God’s grace we are forever redeemed and set free. Many get to the first stage and most also reach the second. But few will go beyond knowledge and grab hold of trust.

Faith means surrendering your whole being through trust in Jesus Christ. It is radical and extraordinary and if it doesn’t transform your life, it’s probably not saving faith.

I grew up on Bible story soundbites and I knew about God and Jesus, but God had to lead me to saving faith in Christ some forty years ago and I’ve never looked back. Mind you, I’m still growing and learning to trust Him more and more. He’s proven faithful and true every single day. Beloved put your faith in the real deal – trust your life to Jesus Christ.

Another Jesus is Being Offered to the World

brm7

by Bill Rudge

There is an accurate saying that Satan will use nine truths to get one lie across. The primary lie he attempts to propagate concerns the identity of Jesus Christ – the One before whom every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess that He is Lord. Satan’s ultimate deception is to suggest you do not need to accept Christ or try to cause you to follow “another Jesus” other than the Jesus of the Bible (2 Corinthians 11:3, 4).

While some demote Jesus to merely a great teacher or prophet, others say we all have the potential to become another Christ, still others will simply substitute Jesus with someone or something else. Attempts are made to minimize, distort, deny or replace Him: All have eternal implications (John 8:24). Anyone who denies that Jesus Christ is the promised Messiah, God incarnate in human flesh and the only way of salvation can be scripturally identified as a false prophet or teacher (1 John 4:1-3; 1 John 2:22, 23 ). As Jesus ascended to heaven, two angels said to the disciples:

Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven (Acts 1:11).

Please notice: It will not be another Jesus or a reincarnation of the Christ spirit, but the same Jesus who ascended into heaven from the Mount of Olives. He will be returning in all His glory. At His Second Coming, biblical evidence, cataclysmic signs, and believers’ physical transformation will undeniably confirm Jesus Christ as the true Messiah.

The time is soon coming when “the kingdom of the world will become the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ” (Revelation 11:15). Jesus will establish His righteous Kingdom wherein true believers will rule and reign with Him for eternity and inherit all God has prepared for those who love and obey Him. Do not settle for an imitation or counterfeit when you can know the TRUE ONE Who leads to eternal life.

“Speak only words to edify someone !!” 12/28/2024 Written by Louis Mize, a good friend

DailyBibleVerse - christ-our-glory: Ephesians 4:29 (NLT) Don't use...

Written by Louis Mize, a good friend  @  https://www.facebook.com/louis.mize

“Speak only words to edify someone !!”

He that covers a transgression seeks love, but he that repeats a matter separates very friends.

Proverbs 17:7

Some people love to kindle fires. But the kind of fire they start is the bad kind of fire. They are those fires that destroy friendships and unity. I call them the devil’s arsonists.

There is another kind of person who kindles fires. They start the good fires in life, those that are beneficial and not harmful to man. Those fires keep a person warm and comfortable and help melt cold, hard, and calloused hearts.

The Lord Jesus Christ is that FRIEND the Bible tells us of who sticks closer than a brother. He is that ONE who truly seeks love. He has proven it by shedding His precious, sinless blood, that cleans and covers all our sins. He is that friend who desires people to live together in unity and peace.

This morning, I thanked God for showing and seeking true love. And I thank Him that He is that Friend who wipes away all our sins and transgressions and chooses to remember them NO MORE, as we approach His throne of mercy, grace, and forgiveness. Help us Lord, to be that kind of person who seeks love, and chooses never to repeat a matter that would separate friends, instead desiring to be a true friend to those who God may place in our path. In Jesus Name we pray. Amen.

Always There

I am with you always.

Matthew 28:20

The Lord Jesus is among His people; He walks between the golden candlesticks; His promise is, “I am with you always.” He is as surely with us now as He was with the disciples at the lake when they saw coals of fire and fish being prepared for breakfast. Not physically, but still in reality, Jesus is with us. And an important truth this is, for where Jesus is, love becomes passionate.

Of all the things in the world that can set the heart burning, there is nothing like the presence of Jesus! A glimpse of Him is so overwhelming that we are ready to say, “Turn away Your eyes from me, for they have overcome me.” Even the fragrance of the aloes and the myrrh and the cinnamon, which linger on His perfumed garments, causes the sick and the faint to grow strong.

A moment’s leaning of the head upon that gracious chest, welcoming His divine love into our poor cold hearts, and suddenly we are no longer cold but shine like seraphs, equal to every task and capable of bearing every suffering. If we know that Jesus is with us, every power will be heightened, and every grace will be strengthened, and we will cast ourselves into the Lord’s service with heart and soul and strength; therefore the presence of Christ is to be desired above all things. His presence will be realized most by those who are most like Him.

If you desire to see Christ, you must grow in conformity to Him. Bring yourself, by the power of the Spirit, into union with Christ’s desires and motives and plans of action, and you are likely to be favored with His company.

Remember, His presence may be enjoyed. His promise is as true as ever. He delights to be with us. If He does not come, it is because we hinder Him by our indifference. He will reveal Himself to our sincere prayers and graciously allow Himself to be detained by our cries and by our tears, for these are the golden chains that bind Jesus to His people.

Reading: Psalm 66:1-12

For the director of music. A song. A psalm.
Shout for joy to God, all the earth!
Sing the glory of his name; make his praise glorious.
Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!
So great is your power that your enemies cringe before you.
All the earth bows down to you;
they sing praise to you, they sing the praises of your name.”
Come and see what God has done,
his awesome deeds for mankind!
He turned the sea into dry land,
they passed through the waters on foot—
come, let us rejoice in him.
He rules forever by his power,
his eyes watch the nations—
let not the rebellious rise up against him.
Praise our God, all peoples, let the sound of his praise be heard;
he has preserved our lives and kept our feet from slipping.
For you, God, tested us; you refined us like silver.
You brought us into prison and laid burdens on our backs.
You let people ride over our heads;
we went through fire and water,
but you brought us to a place of abundance
(NIV).

Reflection
I can’t answer for you, but I for one did not enjoy writing tests at school. It’s not that I did poorly on tests, the exception being high school math. But let’s not go there. I haven’t used algebraic equations for the last forty years and have suffered no ill effects.

Simply put, tests are stressful. No matter how well you know the material, you can’t be sure of the outcome. Will there be a trick question? Will you experience a momentary brain burp? Have you studied the right subject matter?

Despite my aversion to tests and major exams as a student, I quite enjoyed administering them after I became a teacher. They provided so much information. They let me see into a student’s head and heart. Was learning happening behind those big brown eyes or were they only going through the motions?

But why would God test us since He knows the outcome in advance? For you, God, tested us; you refined us like silver (v. 10). God tests us to bring out the very best in us. When we are tested, we discover for ourselves what lies below the surface. In the furnace of affliction, God removes the dross from our lives so His glory can shine through. Only then can we properly reflect His glory.

Response: LORD God, help me appreciate the tests you bring into my life. I praise you in advance because you are working to perfect me through the hardships I face. Change me for the better. Amen.

Your Turn: How have you performed during times of testing? What have you learned during such times?

“The Perfect Gift” 12/25/2024 Written by bruce r. mills for “God’s group”

May include: A nativity scene painting depicts Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus in a dimly lit stable. Mary, in a flowing white robe, cradles the baby, while Joseph, in a dark blue robe, looks on. Warm light illuminates the scene, casting shadows on the stable walls. The painting is rich in detail and texture, with a focus on the tender moment of the nativity.

“The Perfect Gift”

Written by bruce r. mills for “God’s group”  @ www.Godsmanforever.com                       [Re-posted from 2021]

Luke 2:11…  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.  (NKJV)

Well, by now most gifts have been bought, and many have already been opened…especially for those on the other side of the world.  People go crazy trying to find just the right gift for those they love.  But many of these gifts will be returned because they are the wrong size, the wrong color, or just not wanted or needed.

When you are out buying a last-minute gift, and the lines at the checkout counter are unbelievable…you wonder what the heck you are doing ??  By the time Christmas day arrives, many are just plain worn out.

Today, as Christians…is a day for us to share the love of Christ with family and friends as we gather together to celebrate the birth of baby Jesus…born for the sole purpose of becoming the Savior of the world. What better time to show those around us the “Perfect Gift” of grace God has given to us? This gift of God’s grace not only has a lifetime guarantee…, but I believe that God’s Word is clear that our salvation is sealed for an eternity.

Ephesians 1:13… In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, (NKJV)

Ephesians 4:30… And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.  (NKJV)

We should never push Christianity on those around us who are not believers.  We just have to show those around us, who don’t have the love of Christ in their heart, that we are different.  Christians are no better than anyone else walking the face of this earth. We should humble ourselves in all situations to show God’s love for others, where it would be impossible to show love if God had not graced us with His perfect gift of salvation.

I believe the only difference between “born again” Christians, and a wretched, non-believing, drug-addicted beggar on the street…is the perfect gift of God’s grace and saving faith, given to all “born again” Christians by God Himself…Ephesians 2:8-9…  As Jesus’ half-brother James puts it…we have to live our lives to reflect who we are in Christ…

James 1:22…  But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.  (NKJV)

So today (and every day), if you are a redeemed, “born again” child of God…shine with the irresistible love and light of Christ, that God will use to bring those in need of His saving grace to you. Jesus tells us this, in…

 Matthew 5:16… Let your light so shine before menthat they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.  (NKJV)

But when God sends you someone with questions about why you are different…be ready to share your God-given responsibility (Matthew 28:19-20), to tell them about the hope that lies within you…

 1 Peter 3:15… But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;   (NKJV)

“The Perfect Gift” of God’s grace, is a gift that is just too precious to keep to yourself. Share God’s gift with others through your words, actions, deeds, and love. Allow the Holy Spirit to reign supreme in your life…(Galatians 5:16 & Ephesians 5:18-20), and light up the world as never before.

Heavenly Father, my prayer to You is that You urge Your children to spend this special day (and every day), living in Your will and Your ways.  Help us Lord, to be beacons of irresistible light to the lost and dying world around us.  Urge us to share Your “Perfect Gift” of grace, on this special day that we celebrate as Christmas and every day. I pray that Your love is spread today, like never before…in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…

Blessings in Christ,  bruce

I take this opportunity to wish all of you and your families a very “Merry CHRISTmas”…and a day that brings Christ front and center in everyone’s life, along with God’s richest blessings…

Not yet a “born again” Christian ?? Not 100% sure you will be going to heaven when you die ?? You absolutely CAN be sure you are heaven-bound when you are “born again” by God above… Open the P.S. below, and seek Jesus Christ to become your personal Lord and Savior before it’s too late…

Fear Not!

I’m being very melodramatic here, total drama queen, but the past couple of weeks have felt a bit like riding in the last car on a roller coaster that’s come off its rails. All is well, things have just been a bit charged. ‘Tis the season, I suppose.

One of my favorite things about Christmastime in the Bible are these words, “fear not.” It’s the most repeated command all throughout. I tend to believe we should hang it on banners and print it on Christmas cards. “Merry” is not actually in the Bible, but rather, “fear not.” I think it would be quite delightful if rather than saying “Merry Christmas,” we all just greeted one another in the grocery store with those words, “Fear not.” One might even say that’s the message of Christmas, that’s the “why” of it all. Jesus came and hand-delivered us a good reason to, “fear not.”

I also enjoy 2 Timothy 1:7“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” It’s a verse that helps me to remember that fear is not of God. And if it’s not “of God” then I don’t have to entertain it, in fact, I shouldn’t. If it’s not “of God” then it doesn’t belong on the menu. Spit it out.

Fear comes in a lot of different forms, some more of a subconscious anxiety, worry, distress, and insomnia. It can be quite hidden and subtle, not even recognized as “fear.” Sometimes conflicts and anger can be rooted in fear. A bit like dogs, fearful, insecure people are prone to be reactionary. Sometimes fear can be wrapped up and hidden within caring and empathy. That’s kind of a sneaky slug where one dumps all their own fears onto someone else. The plaintive greeting (or warning really,) “stay safe,” captures that sentiment for me. Dude, I’m just relaxing by the fire enjoying myself, but thanks for reminding me the world is a dangerous place and my ability to keep myself safe is quite questionable. Gee, for a moment there, I kind of forgot I was supposed to be so afraid, but hey, at least YOU feel better now.

Fear is a sneaky bugger. It’s also a spirit. An energy. It’s contagious, we spread it around, it crackles in the air. It can be felt by others. You can startle people, fear has a kind of collectiveness to it. It’s also what lurks at the root of a lot of other problems like envy, competition, abandonment, anger, and a bazillion other assorted relationship dysfunctions.

That photo above is simply because I enjoy lions very much. I enjoy them because I get to gaze upon their majesty and contemplate the nature of their Creator. There is no fear at all, just some wonder and awe. If instead, I lived where lions literally roamed about as giant predators, I might be fearful or at the very least, cautious. Note how the nature of the lion hasn’t changed at all, but rather my own geography has changed, and my placement in the story has changed. Fear is often like that, too. It is generally our attitude, our response, our perception, our location that change the entire storyline.

When we are located safely in Christ, we have nothing to fear. Jesus is our orientation. He is our geography.

I think Romans 8:38-39 really captures the heart of that matter, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

LOL!  Because this is the internet, I feel compelled to issue a disclaimer. Please be sensible. Be prepared. Do not walk out into traffic. Do not try to fly! I am speaking more of things like worry, random anxiety, and assorted other relationship dysfunctions which sometimes can get hit with a highlighter pen or draped in neon lights this time of year.

Here are 11 Psalms that praise the Lord !!  – https://www.hearthymn.com/psalms-to-praise-God.html

Christmas Praise

I praise you, Lord Jesus, for surrendering all the glorious perfections of heaven, to live among us with all our un-glorious imperfections [1].

Also astounding is your arrival as an infant, born to peasants, in a stable-cave. How ignoble for the King of kings, the Alpha and Omega who always was and always will be.

As Mary and Joseph tried to rest on scratchy straw, did they wonder, “How could this be part of your plan, Lord Jehovah? How could the Messiah fulfill his grand destiny from such lowly beginnings?”

Little did the couple know:

  • their helpless baby who could not stand “would one day walk on water” [2]

  • his little hands that could not grasp would one day break five rolls and two fish into pieces and feed five thousand people

  • their Child who could not speak would one day make the hearts of men burn within them as he spoke words of supernatural wisdom and insight

  • his flailing arms would one day spread wide on a cross, to save his people from their sins [3]

The depth of your humility and the magnitude of your sacrifice, Lord Jesus, overwhelm me.

I praise you for all the ways you demonstrated God’s character to us during your earthly ministry—his love, compassion, goodness, and more.

I praise you, Lord Jesus, for your power on display in the miracles you performed and those you continue to perform to this day, confirming who you are—not just a wise teacher or mystic but the Son of God.

I praise you for the glimpses of heaven we experience from time to time of what it will be like when all creation is “brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God,”–because of what you accomplished [4].

Such glimpses include:

  • The exquisite beauty of nature, causing us to gasp in wonder

  • The profound heart-to-heart connections we experience with other believers

  • The songs that move our spirits and cause tears of blissful joy

  • The sense of your presence—your encompassing and perfect shalom [5]

–C. S. Lewis (The Problem of Pain, 150-151)

I praise you, Lord God, that before time began, you’d already established the plan for your Son’s birth, ministry, death, and resurrection [6].I praise youLord Jesus, for withstanding horrific suffering in our place, paying the penalty for our sins [7].I praise you Heavenly Father, for your power over death, proven by the resurrection of your Son. He received a grand welcome back to heaven and now sits on his throne, receiving the honor, glory, and power he deserves [8].

I praise you for the promise—repeated many times through scripture—that upon our physical deaths, those of us who believe in Christ will live forever with you, surrounded by the wonders of heaven [9].I praise youLord Jesus, we’ll even sit with you on your throne [10]!Such an honor seems downright absurd, and yet there it is—promised and guaranteed in your infallible Word—promises we can trust, a guarantee we can believe in.I pray that many will see:

And may many embrace you, O Christ, as their Prince of Peace and King of kings, to experience your shalom and joy. May they accept your gift of gifts: eternal life!
