Reading: Psalm 119:105-112

נ Nun

Your word is a lamp for my feet,
    a light on my path.
I have taken an oath and confirmed it,
that I will follow your righteous laws.
I have suffered much;
preserve my life, LORD, according to your word.
Accept, LORD, the willing praise of my mouth,
    and teach me your laws.
Though I constantly take my life in my hands,
I will not forget your law.
The wicked have set a snare for me,
but I have not strayed from your precepts.
Your statutes are my heritage forever;
they are the joy of my heart.
My heart is set on keeping your decrees
    to the very end (
NIV). *

Reflection
Some stories that you read are memorable. They stick with you. You identify with the character or the event, and as a result, on a certain level their experience becomes your own.

Several years back, I read a story in Guideposts Magazine about a boy in Florida who went rambling through a field on his grandparents’ farm. On this adventurous excursion, he jumped across an irrigation ditch only to land on a deadly snake—a water moccasin—which instantly bit him. It was only through the miraculous intervention of God that this young fellow made it back to the farmhouse and survived. In this situation the old proverb, look before you leap, definitely applied.

We too are pilgrims traveling through a field—a dark and dangerous world. That’s why we need the light of God’s word. The psalmist says it best. Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

We need a light—the light of God’s word—on our path because there are venomous snakes in the grass. The psalmist uses a different analogy; he speaks of snares. But the net result is the same. On this path we are walking, our very life is in grave danger. We must see clearly to avoid disaster. The wicked have set a snare for me, but I have not strayed from your precepts.

We need to know the precepts—the principles of God’s word—if we are going to walk in His ways. This goes beyond a fixed set of rules. It involves an understanding of the reason for God’s commands. For this we need the Spirit and the mind of Christ. We are not just walking to avoid pitfalls; we are walking toward a goal. That goal is Christ Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2, NKJV).

Response: LORD God, shine the light of your word on the path of life you have ordained for me to walk. I am not on this path by accident, but through your will and purpose. Guide me home. Amen.

Your TurnHave you encountered snares or snakes in the grass? How do you know you are on the right path?

I suspect a lot of people wrestle with the problem of evil and why God allows bad things to happen? I think everyone must find their own answers to those question and those answers are going to be personal, tailor-made to each individual.

I can’t offer a pat answer from God or some kind of theological explanation that fits because God is not the one asking the question. He already knows what’s going on, we do not. So, the question is actually all about us and not about Him at all.

For me, I learned that those questions are not so much about discovering the nature of God, but rather about discovering the nature of myself. I had huge abandonment issues stemming from childhood. The nature of God never changes, He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. I, however, have huge wounds, emotions, and traumas that influence my perception of who God is.

So, one of the best ways to get answers to one’s questions about the problem of evil is to simply go ask Him. That sounds kind of silly but it’s very effective. Talk to God in prayer, tell Him how you feel, ask for Him to help you heal and discover the truth about yourself that is keeping you separate from Him. Sometimes it takes a while and lots of asking, discovering, and prayer. Somebody smart once said, “Faith is an inside job.

I really enjoy the revelation to be found in Psalm 22. As Jesus is dying on the cross, He says,  “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? ” I had always thought that meant God had abandoned Him on the cross, turned away from Him in His time of greatest need. I thought, well if He’d do that to His own Son, I want no part of Him. Well, what if Jesus was not accusing God of turning away from Him at all, not lamenting about His own separation and suffering, but rather quoting prophecy? Psalm 22 contains those very same words. It’s a Psalm proclaiming victory, mission accomplished, not one declaring abandonment.

I had to change some of my deeply rooted perceptions and preconceived notions in order to understand better and to get to something that was more akin to the truth rather then just a trauma reaction. We tend to be hurt and angry, so we attack or with drawl, accuse God in a retaliatory or vengeful way, rather than trying to listen and understand so as to gain some peace within ourselves.

So those are my thoughts on the first day of 2024. I really wish I could offer some more concrete answers for what can be a really painful subject. The thing is, “faith is an inside job” and you really need Jesus to help you sort it all out, personally.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 - Bible verse (ESV) - DailyVerses.net

Written by bruce r. mills for “God’s group” @ www.Godsmanforever.com

Revised from 12/11/2012

“Share your comfort and joy with others”

2 Corinthians 1:3-4… Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfortwho comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.  (NKJV)

The Apostle Paul wrote the opening scripture… Indeed, God the Father is the Father of mercies and God of all comfort to those that become Christians; when they are filled with the Holy Spirit the moment they are saved from their lifetime of sins…Acts 2:1-5

It is absolutely amazing to me, that the Apostle Paul could go through so much suffering for Christ; and still be able to find comfort from the Holy Spirit through all his tribulations… For those who have never read about what the Apostle Paul suffered for Christ, here is the link to the scripture…     http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2cor11:22-28&version=NKJV

Jesus, when He was telling His disciples that He was going to have to leave them to be with His Father, told them about the Helper (the Holy Spirit), that His Father was going to send down to them later…to help them remember all things He had taught them…John 14:26… But the Helperthe Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.  (NKJV)

I quote this scripture often, because it should be a comfort to all of God’s children as well…  The KJV version of John 14:26…substitutes “Comforter” in place of “Helper”…

As Christians, we should be doing exactly as the Apostle Paul tells the Corinthians, in the opening scripture…  As we are comforted by the Holy Spirit, with His Love, Peace, and Joy…we should “pay it forward”, just like the young boy in the movie…  But to be able to pass on to others this Spirit-given supernatural peace (Philippians 4:6-7) and comfort in our lives…we must first let the Holy Spirit take full control of our own lives…  We as Christians must confess, repent, and turn from all of our sins (1 John 1:9)…and allow the fullness of God to take charge of our lives…  As we walk in the Spirit, the love of Christ will fill our hearts with His agape love, and the comfort and joy of knowing we are resting in God’s hands…

The Apostle Paul explains Christ’s agape love, which goes beyond any mortal love we could possibly understand, in this scripture…Ephesians 3:19… to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.  (NKJV)

When we as Christians are filled with (totally controlled by) the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18-20), He should help us to be guided into living a life that will emulate Jesus Christ, so that we can share the comfort and joy He gives us, with those in need !!

Heavenly Father, I pray that all of Your children could set aside their own personal agenda…and do their best to humbly put You, and then all others ahead of themselves…  Help us Father, to live in a way that will allow us to bring true comfort and joy to those around us in need… I pray for Christ’s agape love to overflow from our hearts like rivers of living water that Your Son Jesus spoke about in Your Word (John 7:38)…in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…

Blessings in Christ,  bruce

“Prayers of the Heart” 3/03/2024 Written by Nancy Ruegge for “From The Inside Out”

Prayers of the Heart

For the last few weeks, we’ve seen hearts nearly everywhere we look–on TV, social media, billboards, and in stores. Merchandizers made sure: none of us lived unaware that yesterday was Valentine’s Day.

But there’s another, more obscure place, where you’ll see numerous hearts all year ‘roundmore than 500 of them. It’s the word “heart” in scripture.

And God wants to be sure none of us live unaware: his heart brims with love for us, not because of who we are, but because of who he is [1].

Such statements assuring us of God’s love appear nearly 300 times in the Bible.

And many of us find our hearts responding in love for him, the One who provides abundant life now and eternal life with him in heaven yet to come [2].

But how do we demonstrate love to an invisible Being? A good place to begin is spending time with him, in his Word and in prayer.

Scripture includes a number of prayer-prompts related to our hearts—that is, our innermost being that includes the intellect, will, and emotions.

For example:

STRENGTHEN my heart, O God, to face whatever this day may bring. Keep me mindful that “your power reaches its peak at the lowest point of adversity” [3].

ATTUNE my heart to yours so that my desires match yours. Remind me: as I spend time delighting myself in you, the love-bond between us grows stronger, as well as my delight in your ways [4].

TRANFORM my heart by changing the way I think. May your truth clear away my confusion, doubts, and fears, to be replaced with your assurance, clarity, and peace [5].

INCLINE my heart toward the righteous and trustworthy instruction of your Word, so my decisions and choices flow out of your heart’s desire for me [6].

SEARCH my heart, O God, and reveal those sins that lurk in the corners—improper thoughts, negative attitudes, faulty motives—so that I might confess, repent and be right with you [7].

FILL my heart with your joy and peace. Then there’ll be no room for worry, discontentment, or frustration. Instead, I can overflow with hope because you, my sovereign Lord, are in control of all things [8].

IMPACT my heart, O God. Take away my stubborn heart and give me a new heart that desires above all to be faithful to you. Then I’ll find your favor surrounding me like a shield [9].

ENLIGHTEN my heart with understanding of who you are, with all your glorious attributes. May such understanding form a firm foundation of contentment, so no matter my circumstances I can rest in your goodness [10].

DIRECT my heart to heed your guidance each day [11]. Help me to see the people around me with your eyes of compassion, to listen with your ears of discernment, speak your words of wisdom, and work with your hands of mercy.

In the powerful name of Jesus, I pray all these things.  AMEN.

And what will be the result of such a prayer?

ncline,

earch, and

ill our hearts

mpact,

nlighten, and

irect our hearts.

Praise God, he satisfies the longing soul and fills the hungry soul with good [12]!

Indispensable

MARCH 1, 2024

They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together Luke 24:33 (NIV)

The cross is incomparable and the cave indispensable. If the Christ of the cross had stopped at the cross His work would have been incomplete. For without the cave the cross amounts to nothing more than the story of a good man who was unjustly killed. Don’t miss the point. The cave changes everything. It separates Christianity from all other religions. For only the founder of Christianity conquered death. There’s no other man or woman who has ever, by his or her own power, come out of the grave. This shouldn’t surprise us. The Son of Man was also the Son of God. His power was given to Him from above.

When I was twelve years old, I visited Jerusalem. In my ignorance, I thought going to the Holy Land would get me closer to Jesus. I was wrong. When our family arrived at the tomb, I was dumbfounded. I expected to see something but there was absolutely nothing to see. Jesus’ body wasn’t there. We had traveled for days and queued up for hours to see zilch. The tomb was empty, just a barren rock-hewn cave. But that’s the whole point. He had risen, just as He said He would.

It’s different from other great leaders. Their corpses testify to their mortality. Going to Moscow’s Red Square, you can see Lenin’s body preserved in a tomb. In Hanoi, China, you can stand in line to view the remains of Ho Chi Minh and the mummy of Tutankhamun is still lying in the original tomb in Egypt. That’s to be expected. We know that death is irreversible. But it was different with Jesus Christ. There are no remains to be seen in Jerusalem. In fact, there are no remains to be seen anywhere. Against all odds, the irreversible was reversed!

The evidence for Christ’s resurrection is overwhelming. “After his suffering, he showed himself . . . and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive” Acts 1:3. In fact after rising from the dead Jesus made approximately a dozen flesh and blood appearances to a total of more than five hundred people.

Christ could always prove His identity. To a skeptical disciple, He said, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe” John 20:27. And to “the Eleven and those with them” (Luke 24:33) He said, “‘Why do doubts rise in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.’ When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.” Luke 24:38-40.

Yes, the cross is incomparable, but the cave is indispensable. For without the cave, there would be no Easter and no Christmas. No Lord – no faith. No Saviour – no hope. Nothing but futility and emptiness (cf. 1 Corinthians 15:32). That’s what Paul meant when he said, “If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men”1 Corinthians 15:19.

“But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ”1 Corinthians 15:57. The hope that Jesus gives goes beyond the grave. “Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive” 1 Corinthians 15:20-22.

There you have it. “The empty cave is the reason my life is so full today – full of life and audacious laughing” Jill Briscoe. For “even in death the righteous have a refuge” Proverbs 14:32. As Christ rose from the dead and lives forever, so will the bodies of believers be raised from the grave. Hallelujah! This is the unshakeable confidence that believers have because of the empty cave.

“Because He lives, I can face tomorrow. Because He lives, all fear is gone. Because I know He holds the future . . . life is worth the living, just because He lives” –  Gloria and William Gaither.

Surpassing Grace: March 2024 Scripture Writing Plan

February 29, 2024Elihu

Children—particularly little children—are more responsive to adults who are willing to speak with them face to face by crouching down to their height. There is something about that simple gesture that invites connection. As adults, we are often inclined to show kindness and favor to small children because they are weaker than we are and (admittedly) adorable.

The Almighty God, the Creator of the Universe, who knit you together, reaches down from His position of power and authority in order to listen to you and me. Like a loving human parent, He inclines Himself to hear you and to help you. In the Psalms, David made a similar comparison: “As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.” (Psalm 103.13, ESV) That favor or kindness He shows is often referred to as “grace.”

What is grace?

This term is used pretty loosely, not merely in religious circles, but secular ones as well. So what is God’s grace?

HELPS word studies defines grace as “God freely extending Himself… reaching (inclining) to people because He is disposed to bless (be near) them.” The Old Testament frequently uses words like “graciousness” or “favor,” while the New Testament frequently uses the word “grace.” (If you like word studies, the Greek (New Testament) is “Charis” (Strongs 5485) and the Hebrew is “kaná” (Strongs 2580)).

When God bestows His grace or favor it is a gift, freely given.

Grace IS…
…a free gift from God
…a reason to rejoice
…the reason we can successfully walk in the light with Christ
…something we obtain through faith

Grace is not…
…a license to sin
…a merit prize
…a result of works

Unfortunately, humans have a tendency to treat His grace lightly—sometimes to the point of contempt—by taking personal credit for the good things in their lives or feeling entitled to prosperity. God’s grace isn’t about mere creature comforts; like a wise father, God seeks the purest good of the soul (which does NOT always mean we’ll enjoy the wealth of this world).

As we learned in last month’s focus on mercy, we deserve justice, but God gives us mercy. Because He is “disposed to bless us,” He showered us with grace by sending Jesus–freely providing a means of receiving salvation.

We can’t earn it.

We can’t repay it.

We don’t deserve it.

We can receive this surpassing grace with gratitude, demonstrating our appreciation by living for Him and loving Him wholeheartedly.

Because of God’s grace, we should earnestly desire to follow Him. He reaches for us! Sometimes, like a small child does with his parents, we pursue something of lesser value, thinking it will make us happy. And it might… for a time. Only God has the power to provide us lasting grace and a joy independent of circumstances. His grace surpasses all others, and we should be thankful to be loved so deeply by One so amazing.

PIVOTAL MOMENT #3:  MAKING YOUR OWN WAY TO THE PROMISE INSTEAD OF GOD’S WAY!

Posted on January 14, 2024 by Pastor Randy

(From the current Message Series)

Here we are Week 3 of 5 in the series:  New Year, New Opportunities, But The Same Old Problems.  The Theme verse for this series is Exodus 13:21-22—The Lord went ahead of them.  He guided them during the day with a pillar of cloud, and he provided light at night with a pillar of fire.  This allowed them to travel by day or by night.  Pay Careful Attention to Verse 22:  And the Lord did not remove the pillar of cloud or pillar of fire from its place in front of the people.

Remember we are looking at those Pivotal Moments where they have the opportunity to spiritually grow—if they respond the right way.  In week 1 they didn’t—they chose the end over the beginning.  Last week we learned about Adverbs—God was ready for them—but they weren’t ready for God.  Now, we are ready for another Pivotal Moment.  But before we read about it—let’s think for a bit.

Imagine, if you will, 2 buzzards circling around, looking for something dead.  That’s what buzzards do, you know.  Nothing dead can be found anywhere.  Finally, one says to the other:  “Forget patience!  Let’s go kill something!”  What does my parable have to do with Pivotal Moments?

What’s your reaction when things come to a standstill?  What are you to do when it seems like—I said Seems Like—that God is nowhere to be seen?  Or maybe you come to a crossroads.  You’re wondering, “Do I go left?  Do I go right?  Do I keep going straight?”  But again—it seems like—God is silent.  What do you do when you’re wondering what to do?  Sounds to me like it’s another ripe Pivotal Moment.  Let’s look at what The Hebrews did when they found themselves in that situation.

1 When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron.  “Come on,” they said, “make us some gods who can lead us.  We don’t know what happened to this fellow Moses, who brought us here from the land of Egypt.”

2 So Aaron said, “Take the gold rings from the ears of your wives and sons and daughters, and bring them to me.”

3 All the people took the gold rings from their ears and brought them to Aaron. 4 Then Aaron took the gold, melted it down, and molded it into the shape of a calf.  When the people saw it, they exclaimed, “O Israel, these are the gods who brought you out of the land of Egypt!”

5 Aaron saw how excited the people were, so he built an altar in front of the calf.  Then he announced, “Tomorrow will be a festival to the Lord!”

6 The people got up early the next morning to sacrifice burnt offerings and peace offerings.  After this, they celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.

Exodus Chapter 32, Verses 1-6 (NLT)

We’ve been following the journey of a people from slavery to The Promise.  And as in every journey, there are those Pivotal Moments—where the outcome could change.  These are the moments where strength of character is found or lost—formed or abandoned.

Today we find them at Mt. Sinai—the place where Moses had encountered God—where he received his calling—his purpose—and his mission in life.  A lot of things have happened along the way.  That’s all part of being on A Journey.  And as we’ve already seen—they haven’t always responded the right way in those Pivotal Moments.

A lot has happened—a lot of different things.  But one thing hasn’t changed.  Do you remember what that was?  The Pillar!  Always visible day and night.  Always in front leading them.  Of all that changed—THIS never changed!

They are getting closer to The Promise—not there yet—but they are in the vicinity.  Don’t forget that all they’ve known was slavery.  They’ve never been a nation before—and all of that is about change.  But they aren’t going to be an ordinary nation—they are to be the Holy Nation that He will use to bring His Image Bearers back into that relationship with Him.

So, before they get there, God wants them to know how holy people are to live.  And since Moses was God’s chosen leader—God wants to meet with Moses so he can let the people know what God expects from them.  Moses lets them know what’s happening and where he’s going.  Ok, they know the where—Mt. Sinai—they know the when—right now—and they know the why—to meet with God who wants them to know things!

What else do they need to know?  Absolutely nothing!  The only thing they don’t know is how long.  Knowing how long is important to us—but—It’s Not Necessary For The Journey!  I wonder how many times Moses heard, “Are we there yet?”  Kids ask that—because they lack the maturity to understand time and distance. But when adults ask that question it’s a sign of immaturity.  And now it’s a different question: “How long is this going to take?”  And when it comes to the ways and means of God—that’s a question of spiritual immaturity.

Instead of waiting for what God wanted—Instead of WAITING for God—They chose to make their own way!  And this is exactly what is happening with is now called Progressive Theology!  People would rather make their own way to God—to The Promise—Instead of listening to God!

Have you ever known people who say they pray?  But even before they pray—they’ve already made up their mind about what God is going to tell them.  They’ve made up their mind about what they are going to hear.  And then they act upon that belief and conviction.  In life people tend to use this thing called Confirmation Bias.

Think about 2 circles.  In one circle are our beliefs, and in the other are the facts—we call that The Truth.  The only thing some people look for from The Truth is anything that fits into their beliefs.  The rest of the Truth Circle is just ignored.  It’s wanting only the things that supports our beliefs and convictions—and ignoring the rest of the truth.

Some want to say that it’s unintentional.  But that’s not true.  It’s a choice—THE Choice—to want our way.  And that’s a costly mistake—one that these people here are about to make.  Some think that the best way to learn from mistakes is to make your own.  Really?  How much sense does that make?

Here’s a novel idea:  How About Learning From The Mistakes Of Others, Too!  Wouldn’t we make fewer mistakes if we did?  Of course!  Even though The Hebrews are at Mt. Sinai where Moses received his calling, mission, and purpose—and even though they have had The Pillar with them every step of the way—they make 3 mistakes we need to learn from and avoid:

  1. THEY IGNORED WHAT GOD HAD ALREADY TOLD THEM!

Don’t forget what we learned—hopefully learned—from last week.  After they had grumbled, God said in Exodus 15:26—“If you will listen carefully to the voice of The Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, obeying His commands and keeping all His decrees, then I will not make you suffer any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians; for I Am The Lord who heals you.”

What had God decreed?  He would lead them to The Promise.  He would give them The Promise.  And now He will heal their brokenness.  That word decrees means to shout out loud!  This wasn’t a secret God was keeping from them.  He shouted it in their hearing.  When you hear something, you can pay attention to it or ignore it.  Well, they chose to ignore it.  They didn’t see Moses—but where was The Pillar?  In front of them!

And God has promised us that He will lead us to The Promise—Give us The Promise—and heal our brokenness.  And this time—He shouted it from The Cross.  Don’t ignore what He said from that Cross—That Sin Is Hideous—That Sin Is Wrong—And The Only Way We Can Be Healed From Our Brokenness Is To Surrender To Him!  Don’t make their Mistake!

  1. THEY FOCUSED MORE ON THEMSELVES THAN THE JOURNEY!

I mean—yeah—there were times they wanted to go back.  But now that they are this close—they are ready to move on.  No hesitation here on their part.  It’s going to be different.  No longer slaves but a real nation.  They just wanted to get there.  They weren’t concerned about being ready to be that nation.  They wanted what they wanted.  They didn’t see the value of The Journey—The Only Saw What They Wanted!

And how do you see The Journey where God is doing all the leading and you are doing all of the following?  Wouldn’t it just be better to get The Promise?  How does The Journey help us?  The Journey is where we learn about God—and about ourselves.  The Journey is Teaching Time—Development Time.  We can’t be ready for The Promise unless we take The Journey.  The old heart—the sinful heart—focuses on what it wants.  The New Heart—the one God puts in us—focuses on The Transformation that is happening IN The Journey.  Don’t make their mistake.

  1. THEY THOUGHT THEY COULD MAKE IT THE REST OF THE WAY ON THEIR OWN!

I mean, the worst is over.  They crossed the Red Sea.  No Egyptian Army chasing them.  Water and food whenever they need it—forget that it was God who provided it.  They’ve faced battle and won.  Some estimate that it would only take 11 more days for them to reach The Promised Land!  That’s pretty close.  But they didn’t want to wait any longer.

They took matters into their own hands.  They made the decision that they were capable of handling those 11 days themselves.  Now, I know they wanted Aaron to make them another god to follow.  But why did they want another God?  Because God wasn’t operating on their terms!  They wanted a god who would do what they wanted.

There are a lot of dangerous things we can say.  Would you like to know one of the most dangerous things we can say?  I’m telling you anyway.  “I was thinking to myself…”  Our thinking is limited.  Did you know that?  Our thinking is limited by time and space—what we understand and what we see.  But get this—God isn’t limited by any of those things.  God isn’t where we turn when we don’t know what else to do—God is where we go to find out what to do!  Their confirmation bias led them to think they could handle it themselves.  Don’t make their mistake!

At last, we arrive at Today’s Big Idea:  When Making A Decision, Always Act On What God Has Already Said!  Don’t look for a new insight.  Don’t wait for that billboard—complete with a flashing arrow sign!  When you don’t know what to do next—just do what God has already said.  And it’s all here in the Bible!

And since we can’t follow Jesus and stay where we are, Here’s Our Next Step:

MAKE ALL OF YOUR DECISIONS BASED ON WHAT GOD’S WORD HAS ALREADY TOLD YOU!

Don’t look for new insights–or explore other perspectives. Stay with and in God’s Word–you know–the one called The Bible.

True Friendship

True Friendship

A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Proverbs 18:24

No one likes to feel alone and without a friend. We all recognize the importance of friendship and the priceless gift that a true friend can be. Deep friendship—the kind marked by consistency, honesty, and sensitivity—is the standard which the Bible holds up to us.

Solomon says that a true friend is always loyal, regardless of circumstances: “A friend loves at all times” (Proverbs 17:17). We see our friends exactly as they are, and we still remain consistent in our loyalty to them. Furthermore, sincere friends are prepared to wound in order that their friends might become all that God intends them to be: “Faithful are the wounds of a friend” (27:6). We may not particularly like it, but each of us is in need of friends who will hold us accountable when we err—and each of us is called to be that kind of friend, too.

We must also consider our use of language: as Paul says, “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up … that it may give grace” (Ephesians 4:29). You can break a heart with just a word, and it can take a lifetime to repair it.

Men and women who take these principles seriously may find themselves asking, “Is there really any friend who embodies such characteristics? Is there anyone that I know who is always constant, who rebukes me in love, who will show grace and sensitivity in all of their dealings with me?” And the answer to those questions is found, ultimately, in the person of Christ. The scope of the Lord Jesus’ friendship is amazing! He befriended the strangest individuals—stopping under a tree to speak with a tax collector, asking for water from an immoral woman, reaching out to a leper. He was consistent in His love; He was prepared to speak words of truth, however challenging; He built others up. Supremely, He is the one who loved His friends enough to lay down His life for them (John 15:13). He is the friend of sinners:

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer! [1]

Jesus’ friendship is the golden standard for ours. As friends of Christ, we are called to love and befriend others as He did. In fact, Jesus said, “You are my friends if you do what I command” (John 15:14). We are to seize every opportunity to share the extent of His friendship with those who are friendless and forlorn.

We live in a world where acquaintances are often countless and “Facebook friends” are many. But that is not true friendship. Do you have friends who are constant, close, and Christlike? If you do, cherish them. If you do not, pray for some. And today, be that kind of friend to others. You may just be the answer to someone’s loneliness or the protection from someone’s ruin.

Questions for Thought

How is God calling me to think differently?

How is God reordering my heart’s affections — what I love?

What is God calling me to do as I go about my day today?

“Can a Christian lose salvation? 2/27/2024 Posted by www.gotquestions.org

The Daily Devotions of Greg Laurie    http://www.harvest.org/devotiona

Four Reasons Why We Can't Lose Our Salvation

 Posted by www.gotquestions.org

Original post @  https://www.gotquestions.org/Christian-lose-salvation.html

QUESTION

Can a Christian lose salvation?

ANSWER

First, the term Christian must be defined. A “Christian” is not a person who has said a prayer or walked down an aisle or been raised in a Christian family. While each of these things can be a part of the Christian experience, they are not what makes a Christian. A Christian is a person who has fully trusted in Jesus Christ as the only Savior and therefore possesses the Holy Spirit (John 3:16Acts 16:31Ephesians 2:8–9).

So, with this definition in mind, can a Christian lose salvation? It’s a crucially important question. Perhaps the best way to answer it is to examine what the Bible says occurs at salvation and to study what losing salvation would entail:

A Christian is a new creation. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17, NKJV). A Christian is not simply an “improved” version of a person; a Christian is an entirely new creature. He is “in Christ.” For a Christian to lose salvation, the new creation would have to be destroyed.

A Christian is redeemed. “For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect” (1 Peter 1:18–19). The word redeemed refers to a purchase being made, a price being paid. We were purchased at the cost of Christ’s death. For a Christian to lose salvation, God Himself would have to revoke His purchase of the individual for whom He paid with the precious blood of Christ.

A Christian is justified. “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1). To justify is to declare righteous. All those who receive Jesus as Savior are “declared righteous” by God. For a Christian to lose salvation, God would have to go back on His Word and “un-declare” what He had previously declared. Those absolved of guilt would have to be tried again and found guilty. God would have to reverse the sentence handed down from the divine bench.

A Christian is promised eternal life. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Eternal life is the promise of spending forever in heaven with God. God promises that if you believe, you will have eternal life. For a Christian to lose salvation, eternal life would have to be redefined. The Christian is promised to live forever. Does eternal not mean “eternal”?

A Christian is marked by God and sealed by the Spirit. “You also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory” (Ephesians 1:13–14). At the moment of faith, the new Christian is marked and sealed with the Spirit, who was promised to act as a deposit to guarantee the heavenly inheritance. The end result is that God’s glory is praised. For a Christian to lose salvation, God would have to erase the mark, withdraw the Spirit, cancel the deposit, break His promise, revoke the guarantee, keep the inheritance, forego the praise, and lessen His glory.

A Christian is guaranteed glorification. “Those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified” (Romans 8:30). According to Romans 5:1, justification is ours at the moment of faith. According to Romans 8:30, glorification comes with justification. All those whom God justifies are promised to be glorified. This promise will be fulfilled when Christians receive their perfect resurrection bodies in heaven. If a Christian can lose salvation, then Romans 8:30 is in error, because God could not guarantee glorification for all those whom He predestines, calls, and justifies.

A Christian cannot lose salvation. Most, if not all, of what the Bible says happens to us when we receive Christ would be invalidated if salvation could be lost. Salvation is the gift of God, and God’s gifts are “irrevocable” (Romans 11:29). A Christian cannot be un-newly created. The redeemed cannot be unpurchased. Eternal life cannot be temporary. God cannot renege on His Word. Scripture says that God cannot lie (Titus 1:2).

Two common objections to the belief that a Christian cannot lose salvation concern these experiential issues: 1) What about Christians who live in a sinful, unrepentant lifestyle? 2) What about Christians who reject the faith and deny Christ? The problem with these objections is the assumption that everyone who calls himself a “Christian” has actually been born again. The Bible declares that a true Christian will not live a state of continual, unrepentant sin (1 John 3:6). The Bible also says that anyone who departs the faith is demonstrating that he was never truly a Christian (1 John 2:19). He may have been religious, he may have put on a good show, but he was never born again by the power of God. “By their fruit you will recognize them” (Matthew 7:16). The redeemed of God belong “to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God” (Romans 7:4).

Nothing can separate a child of God from the Father’s love (Romans 8:38–39). Nothing can remove a Christian from God’s hand (John 10:28–29). God guarantees eternal life and maintains the salvation He has given us. The Good Shepherd searches for the lost sheep, and, “when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home” (Luke 15:5–6). The lamb is found, and the Shepherd gladly bears the burden; our Lord takes full responsibility for bringing the lost one safely home.

Jude 1:24–25 further emphasizes the goodness and faithfulness of our Savior: To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy—to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.”

God’s Transforming Word

You have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 3:15

Today’s Scripture & Insight :

2 Timothy 3:10–17

When Kristin wanted to buy a special book for Xio-Hu, her Chinese husband, the only one she could find in Chinese was a Bible. Although neither of them was a believer in Christ, she hoped he would appreciate the gift anyway. At first sight of the Bible, he was angry, but eventually he picked it up. As he read, he became persuaded by the truth in its pages. Upset at this unforeseen development, Kristin started to read the Scriptures in order to refute Xio-Hu. To her surprise, she also came to faith in Jesus through being convinced by what she read.

The apostle Paul knew the transforming nature of Scripture. Writing from prison in Rome, he urged Timothy, whom he mentored, to “continue in what you have learned” because “from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures” (2 Timothy 3:14–15). In the original language, the Greek for “continue” has the sense of “abide” in what the Bible reveals. Knowing that Timothy would face opposition and persecution, Paul wanted him to be equipped for the challenges; he believed his protégé would find strength and wisdom in the Bible as he spent time pondering its truth.

God through His Spirit brings Scripture alive to us. As we dwell in it, He changes us to be more like Him. Even as He did with Xio-Hu and Kristin.

Reflect & Pray

How have you been changed through spending time reading and pondering the Bible? When have the Scriptures come alive to you?

Author of all that lives, thank You for inspiring the Bible to be such a life-giving book. May I submit to You as I read the Scriptures.

Learn how to effectively study the Bible.
