Reading: Psalm 117

Praise the LORD, all you nations;
extol him, all you peoples.
For great is his love toward us,
and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever.
Praise the LORD

Reflection
Psalm 17
is the shortest of all the psalms. It reminds me of tabasco sauce. It’s concentrated; you don’t need much to set your mouth on fire.

What’s so great—so powerful—about Psalm 117 you ask? Well in 29 short words, it sums up the call and global appeal of the entire Bible.

Let’s consider this opening sentence: Praise the LORD, all you nations; extol him, all you peoplesThis call to worship is for all people; it’s universal. The message of the Bible is for all people. It’s not limited to a single nation, race, or people group.

This universal call for praise is unusual because it draws all humanity into a common faith in the LORD. The Jewish faith was and is a very exclusive religion. This is the faith of the chosen people—God’s chosen people. They did not choose Him, but rather they were uniquely selected by God to bear His name before the nations of the world. Throughout the Old Testament we have a clear sense that God was dealing with his own special people, and they were to walk separate from the nations. They received God’s laws and were the guardians of His word. They were instructed not to intermarry with other nations, nor be polluted by them and their idol worship. The worshippers of Yahweh were an exclusive group, a unique people, but they were not evangelistic. They kept the message to themselves.

But here in Psalm 117 the constricted, exclusive God of the Old Testament appears to break out of His narrow nationalist cocoon. We see that He is a God for all nations, not just for the descendants of Abraham. Here we catch a glimpse of the big picture—the global perspective.

All the nations of the earth are to praise Him. The longstanding intent of the God of Israel is that every people group should know his ways and experience His salvation.

But why should all nations praise the LORD? The second verse of this miniature psalm provides the answer. For great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Where did the LORD demonstrate His great love for us? We see God’s love most vividly on the cross. There the Son of God poured out His blood to redeem men and women, boys, and girls, from every nation under heaven. Their love flowed down in a crimson stream. There God fulfilled His Abrahamic promise. “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son” (Genesis 22:8). There the prophecy of John the Baptist was achieved. “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).

Concentrated within the shortest Psalm is enough truth to set the world on fire.

Response: Father God, I just want to praise You. Thank You for Your great love and faithfulness as revealed by Jesus on the cross. I love You, Lord Jesus. I am grateful that Your love encompasses all. Amen.

Your TurnWhy is racism contrary to anyone who claims to love God? If God has a universal love for humanity, why do we sometimes try to put limits on that love?

Shun the Shame

by Denise Pass | Jan 29, 2024 | Shame

Shun the Shame

I have a confession. Not everybody loves me. Some people talk about me and spread false rumors. And this still hurts. How about you? Even though I have learned and grown so much in the area of shame, other people shunning and rejecting me has been something I have struggled with for most of my life. But when we are shunned, we don’t have to be shamed. We can shun the shame instead.

Shun the Shame

The reason we feel shame for people shunning us is because our very identity is questioned, and we feel judged as being “not good enough.”

People—even professed Christians—can treat you horribly and seem to feel no shame themselves for their sinful behavior. This rejection is the stuff of the schoolyard when bullies and mean kids pronounce others as deficient in some manner. One would think that adults would know better, but we cannot stop the shame we feel by making others behave. We have to deal with our response to their shunning.

We can shun the shame when we release their rejection and replace it with God’s affection. YOU are loved so very much by God, Who went to radical measures to tell you so.

Shun the Fame

Shunning is only powerful if we are seeking the approval of others. Questioning why their approval means so much to us begins to peel back the layers to the truth: their shunning brings up other painful rejections that maybe we did not deal with. But anyone’s rejection does not define our worth. We don’t need to be famed by everyone. Truth be told, we are not a fan of everyone. Laying down the pursuit of man’s praise is such a beautiful moment of freedom. Don’t give people the power to define your worth. And when we can love people who don’t love us, God is glorified, and the shunning cycle stops. We don’t have to shun others just because they shun us.

“But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”         —Matt 5:44

Revelation!

Sometimes it really does feel as if we are living in some kind of apocalyptic dystopian nightmare that is downright Biblical. However, never mind the “Left Behind” series, I wanted to return to the word “revelation” and its original definition. It means, “a surprising and previously unknown fact, especially one that is made known in a dramatic way” or, “the divine a supernatural disclosure to humans of something relating to human existence or the world.”

I call a revelation, “a close encounter of the God kind.” It has absolutely nothing to do with aliens, it is just a woefully inadequate phrase attempting to describe, “a divine supernatural disclosure.” All in good humor here, some people like to mark the day they found Jesus or were born again, and nothing wrong with that, it’s a good thing. I just happen to prefer to be born again just yesterday, kind of like one might claim to have just fallen off the turnip truck. That’s how I try to remain open to the idea of ongoing revelation. While it’s true that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, my own ability to understand and perceive things is always growing.

Recently Chado from ConnectHook shared a comment and linked to a poem about Drowning versus Dead that I really appreciated. I think sometimes there is a lot of confusion about what it means to become a Christian, but it really is like becoming alive. Being resurrected, finding new life. We are not going from a “bad person” to a “good person,” we are going from dead to alive. I hate to use the term “woke,” because that carries such cultural baggage, but it really is kind of like waking up. Coming out of a coma. Depends on how romantic your personality is, but some people have described finding Jesus as having found, “true love’s kiss.”

We tend to have a close encounter of the God kind in a somewhat individual way. It is unlikely one will encounter God with thunderbolts and Charleston Heston parting the Red Sea, although anything is possible. Some people actually do have “Road to Damascus” experiences.

For the most part, however, I’d say God is very gentle in softly making His presence known to us. “Be still and know that I am” is one of my favorite verses. The modern world sometimes tries to place value on what has the loudest, biggest, grandest special effects and that is not true at all. That is really just Hollywood.

So I just wanted to put this out there, I just wanted to reaffirm the idea that Christians do not really go from a, “bad person” to a, “good person,” it is more like stepping from death to life. I still love the hymn “Amazing Grace” for that very reason, “I was lost but now I’m found, was blind but now I see.”

Jesus said, “I come that they may have life and life more abundant.” Romans 6:4 tells us, We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

These are challenging concepts to put into words and also they are spiritual notions, and analogies. It just makes me sad sometimes when non-believers (and even sometimes believers) think that our faith is all about what happens after we die. Or that it’s just all about having your sins put on a scale next to your “good works” and seeing if you have scored enough gaming points to reach the next level. Or that our faith is somehow about depriving ourselves of everything in a punitive manner because one is a miserable wretch. Or that it’s somehow related to being “good” or “bad” with a Divine parental authority figure ready to dole out punishment.

Something that often makes me laugh, a point I like to try to make, “judgment” in ancient days was not criminal court as we see in the modern world. We are not criminal defendants being sentenced, we are receiving a judgment like one might get in civil court. “Judgement” was once about restoration, restoring freedom, restoring property, or giving one back their rightful children as we see in King Solomon’s tale. The Persistent widow was eager to go to court, so eager that she made a nuisance of herself just to get heard. That’s a much better analogy for what “judgment” actually looks like in a Biblical context.

Sometimes a few Christians get cranky with me, they worry that without the perpetual threat of judgment, hell, without using fear to force people to be good, the world will just go to hell in a handbasket. Well, all I can say is, so how is that working out for you? Is the faith growing? Are we producing good fruit? Is there an epidemic of Christ-like behavior going on out in the world?

S-l-o-w Looking

Most visitors to an art museum spend fifteen to thirty seconds looking at a painting, but art enthusiasts insist that’s not near long enough to fully enjoy each work.

Take for example da Vinci’s world-famous Mona Lisa. You’ve seen photographs; some of you may have viewed the original at the Louvre. Besides the model’s haunting expression, what makes this painting stand out from others?

First, note da Vinci’s use of shadow to give contour to the face and clothing. As a result, da Vinci achieved more realism than other painters of his time.

Second, enlarge the image above and study da Vinci’s masterful attention to detail—the intricate gathers of the bodice, the graceful tendrils of her hair, the next-to-nothing veil.

Third, focus on the background. Mona Lisa appears to be sitting in front of a window with a lovely view of mountains, trees, and a lake. Da Vinci used a technique called foreshortening to condense the wide scene onto his narrow canvas.

Fourth, note the hazy atmosphere, created as da Vinci blurred the edges of his almost undetectable brushstrokes.

Of course, additional features also contribute to Mona Lisa’s magnificence. Yet even this short list makes clear: there’s more to the Mona Lisa than most of us realize.

And to know more makes us appreciate more and enjoy more. But such results require close observation through slow looking.

The same principle applies to God. To know God more will allow us to enjoy and appreciate him more.

But how do we observe closely Someone who’s invisible?

We begin with evidence of the Unseen. One example, his presence and character traits revealed in the events of our lives:

  • Caring protection from harm on numerous occasions
  • Generous provision of countless necessities, gifts, and blessings
  • Perfect wisdom, as certain desires of our hearts haven’t come true, recognized in hindsight
  • Unfailing faithfulness to see us through disappointment, difficulty, and uncertainty
  • Gracious goodness in every joyful moment, every delightful surprise. They all come from him.

Every day provides much evidence of his benevolent presence in the lives of each of his children. The more we look, the more we’ll find. And as each discovery is turned into praise our spirits fill with joy.

Another way to practice slow looking is to spend time in God’s presence, learning more about him through his Word.

It makes sense: “Delight in God cannot occur in an intellectual vacuum” [1].

“But I don’t know where to start!” someone might say.

The internet offers a variety of reading plans, and once a plan is in place, we apply the practice of slow-looking as we read.

Writing the answers to such questions as these hone our observation skills:

  • What does this passage say about God and his character?
  • What truths does he teach?
  • What does God promise here that offers hope and encouragement?
  • Is there a prayer that applies to my life? (Write it out, perhaps in your own words, and personalize it.)
  • Has God included an example to follow or not follow [2]?

Slow looking through the act of writing also helps deepen our understanding and appreciation, expanding our capacity to enjoy God.

Another benefit? Taking joy in God and all his excellencies increases our strength to endure.

What moment of slow looking has led you to a recent discovery about God? Please share in the comment section below!

Paid in Full

JANUARY 8, 2024

He (Jesus) is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world 1 John 2:2. (NIV)

Czar Alexander loved to disguise himself as a commoner in order to mingle with his subjects. On one of his outings, he visited the army barracks and, passing a tent, observed a young officer slumped at a table, sound asleep. Something drew the Czar in to take a closer look and as he peered over the soldier’s shoulder he saw a revolver and a sheet of paper with a long list of gambling debts. Below the column of figures the soldier had written, “Who can pay so much?”

The Czar was no fool. It was obvious the young officer had gambled away everything he had. Now, deeply in debt, he had no way to meet his obligations. The only way out was to use the revolver and bring his life to an end. After writing the words, “Who can pay so much?” he had fallen asleep but would soon awake and then . . .

The Czar’s first thought was to report him, but then he recognized the young man as the son of a friend. So, changing his mind, he took the pen lying next to the paper, dipped it in the ink, and then wrote “Alexander” underneath the question, “Who can pay so much?”

Some time later the young officer awoke, picked up the revolver, and with grim determination raised the barrel to his temple. Before pulling the trigger he glanced at the list of debts for the last time, and as he did he saw that something else had been written after the question, “Who can pay so much?” It was Alexander’s name. Dropping the revolver, he snatched up the paper with a mixture of bewilderment and joy.

Early the next morning a messenger arrived from the palace with a bag of money and greetings from the Czar. To the ruble, his debts were paid in full.

Like the young officer, we too have a list of debts that can never be paid. It’s the debt of sin, and in much the same way as the soldier couldn’t pay his debt, there is no way we can pay our debt. It’s a dismal situation and appears to be a dead end (cf. Romans 6:23).

But impossibilities become possibilities with God. There is One who can pay the debt. One greater than Czar Alexander. One who has in fact already paid for the sin of all humankind and has paid it in full. For Jesus “is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world” 1 John 2:2. That’s good news! In Jesus, our debt of sin is cancelled once and for all. It simply remains for us to accept His gift through faith. So “confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord’, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead,” and “you will be saved” Romans 10:9.

There Can Be Hope in Grief

We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.

Sooner or later, you will face grief as a loved one leaves this life. The question is not whether you will grieve; the question is how.

Some of the Thessalonians were confused about the return of Jesus Christ and the resurrection of the dead. Their lack of understanding was causing distress. How were they supposed to think about fellow Christians who had died before Jesus returned? Where were these Christians now, and what would become of them?

Paul begins by reminding believers of the distinction between God’s people and the rest of mankind, “who have no hope.” We were once like everyone else; we should “remember that [we] were at that time separated from Christ … having no hope and without God in the world” (Ephesians 2:12). Now, though, we have been redeemed and transformed. We have been brought from hopelessness to hope. This change ought to be a great encouragement to us. It is this living personal faith that distinguishes us from the “others.”

Additionally, in referring to “those who are asleep,” Paul emphasizes the temporary nature of death for the believer; it is not a permanent condition. Yet while the metaphor of sleep helps us to grapple with what will happen to our bodies in the moment of death, it does not explain the totality of what happens to the soul. It is not intended to convey the idea that the soul is unconscious in the interim period between death and resurrection. Jesus plainly taught that after death there would be an instantaneous awareness of happiness or pain (see, for instance, Luke 16:22-24). It is clear in Scripture that death brings the believer immediately into a closer, richer, fuller experience of Jesus (23:42-43; Philippians 1:21-24).

This focus on death’s temporary nature informs our understanding of Christian grief. For the grieving unbeliever, death brings only the dreary wail of despair and a deep emptiness that no amount of wishful thinking or resorting to cliché can fill. For the believer, there is genuine, tearful sorrow, but it should always be accompanied by an exalting psalm of hope, for when the Lord returns, He will “bring with him those who have fallen asleep.” A Christian’s funeral is not a time to say goodbye forever but to say, “See you again.” The absence of your loved one is temporary; the reunion will be permanent.

When life’s most puzzling questions tempt us to despair, we can find comfort in knowing that God’s word is sufficient for all things, including our understanding of death. Take these verses to heart and imprint them on your memory, for the day will come when you need to cling to them. And make this your prayer: “Lord Jesus, help me to become a student of the Book, to no longer live with confusion or uneasiness but to be filled with Your knowledge as one who resides in Your company, that I might live and grieve with hope.”

What Is Spiritual Discernment? A Bible Study | Jack Wellman

 Posted by www.gotquestions.org

Original post @  How can I increase my spiritual discernment? | GotQuestions.org

QUESTION

How can I increase my spiritual discernment?

ANSWER

Discernment is defined as “the quality of being able to grasp and comprehend what is obscure; an act of perceiving something; a power to see what is not evident to the average mind.” The definition also stresses accuracy, as in “the ability to see the truth.” Spiritual discernment is the ability to tell the difference between truth and error. It is basic to having wisdom.

Arguments and debates surround spiritual truth because it is obscure. Jesus, speaking to His disciples about the Pharisees, said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given” (Matthew 13:11). Satan has “blinded the minds of unbelievers” (2 Corinthians 4:4), so God must shed light on the human mind to enable us to understand truth. It is impossible to attain wisdom without God. He gives discernment or takes it away (Job 12:19-21).

Some have mistakenly defined spiritual discernment as a God-given awareness of evil or good spiritual presences—the ability to tell if a demon is in the room. While some people may possess this capability, it is not the biblical meaning of discernment. Spiritual discernment ultimately has to do with wisdom and the ability to distinguish truth from error.

Wisdom is personified in Proverbs 1 and described as someone that we can “get to know” (vv. 20-33). The Bible says that Jesus Christ is “wisdom from God” (1 Corinthians 1:30). Therefore, wisdom, or spiritual discernment, is something that comes from knowing Jesus Christ. The world’s way of getting wisdom is different from God’s way. The learned of the world gain knowledge and apply reason to knowledge to solve problems, construct buildings and create philosophies. But God does not make the knowledge of Himself available by those means. First Corinthians 1:18-31 says the “wisdom of the wise” is frustrated by God who delivers wisdom to the “foolish” and the “weak” by way of a relationship with Jesus Christ. That way, “no human being can boast in His presence” (verse 29). We learn to be spiritually discerning by knowing Him.

It is not wrong to possess knowledge or have an education, and it is not wrong to use reason and logic to solve problems. However, spiritual discernment cannot be attained that way. It must be given by the revelation of Jesus Christ to the believer, and then developed by way of training in righteousness (Hebrews 5:14) and prayer (Philippians 1:9). Hebrews 5:11-14 shows how spiritual discernment is developed. The writer speaks to those who had become “dull of hearing,” meaning they had fallen out of practice discerning spiritually. The writer of Hebrews tells them that everyone who lives on “milk” (rather than the “solid food” desired by the mature) is unskilled in the word of righteousness; however, the mature Christian has been “trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.” The keys, according to this passage, are becoming skilled in the Word of God (by which we define righteousness) and “constant practice” (through which we gain experience).

So, how does one increase spiritual discernment? First, recognizing that God is the only one who can increase wisdom, pray for it (James 1:5Philippians 1:9). Then, knowing the wisdom to distinguish good from evil comes by training and practice, go to the Bible to learn the truth and, by meditation on the Word, reinforce the truth.

When a bank hires an employee, he is trained to recognize counterfeit bills. One would think that the best way to recognize a counterfeit would be to study various counterfeits. The problem is that new counterfeits are being created every day. The best way to recognize a counterfeit bill is to have an intimate knowledge of the real thing. Having studied authentic bills, bank cashiers are not fooled when a counterfeit comes along. A knowledge of the true helps them identify the false.

This is what Christians must do to develop spiritual discernment. We must know the authentic so well that, when the false appears, we can recognize it. By knowing and obeying the Word of God, we will be “trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.” We will know God’s character and will. This is the heart of spiritual discernment – being able to distinguish the voice of the world from the voice of God, to have a sense that “this is right” or “this is wrong.” Spiritual discernment fends off temptation and allows us to “hate what is evil; cling to what is good” (Romans 12:9).

The Righteous City

May he produce in you . . . every good thing that is pleasing to him.

Hebrews 13:21 NLT

Today’s Scripture & Insight :

Hebrews 13:14–21

On New Year’s Eve 2000, officials in Detroit carefully opened a hundred-year-old time capsule. Nestled inside the copper box were hopeful predictions from some city leaders who expressed visions of prosperity. The mayor’s message, however, offered a different approach. He wrote, “May we be permitted to express one hope superior to all others . . . [that] you may realize as a nation, people, and city, you have grown in righteousness, for it is this that exalts a nation.”

More than success, happiness, or peace, the mayor wished that future citizens would grow in what it means to be truly just and upright. Perhaps he took his cue from Jesus, who blessed those who long for His righteousness (Matthew 5:6). But it’s easy to get discouraged when we consider God’s perfect standard.

Praise God that we don’t have to rely on our own effort to grow. The author of Hebrews said it this way: “May the God of peace . . . equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ” (Hebrews 13:20–21). We who are in Christ are made holy by His blood the moment we believe in Him (v. 12), but He actively grows the fruit of righteousness in our hearts throughout a lifetime. We’ll often stumble on the journey, yet still we look forward to “the city that is to come” where God’s righteousness will reign (v. 14).

Reflect & Pray

For what Christlike attributes would you like to be known? How can you encourage others to seek God’s righteousness?

Dear God, please work in me what’s pleasing to You.

WINSOME WEDNESDAY

Posted on January 24, 2024 by atimetoshare.me

“Winsome” is one of those words we don’t use in daily conversation anymore, but it’s a lovely word. It’s an adjective that means – sweetly or innocently charming. Maybe that’s why we don’t use it much.  Our world has become less innocent, more bitter and less charming. What happened to those days of innocence – when thoughts were on simple things that would amuse or entertain? Oh, well, that isn’t the reason for this post really. I’ve done my share of complaining about the state of our emotions lately. It’s time to be winsome. At least a little winsome.

Yesterday, we had a meeting with Paul’s primary doctor. Another trip to ER required a follow-up. The day before I received a knee injection and was feeling a little sorry for myself. We all have days like that. Where things don’t always go as planned. We’re traveling through life with a feeling of being on track and something happens to disrupt that. It seems to happen a lot as we get older. However, if I’m honest with myself, life has always put detours in our way, but with God’s help, we’ve managed to get through them. Life tests can be difficult. There’s no getting around that fact. No matter what we do, or how hard we try, things happen that disrupt your daily living. Some days, you just wait for the axe to fall, because you know it will.

So how do we get back on track? I guess the best way to do that is to return to the Bible for advice. God has a plan for each one of us. He has control over that plan and will direct it for our benefit. He has paid a great price to redeem us. He will never leave us. His love is indescribable. The example His Son lived during His time on earth can serve us well. We can never live up to it, but He has shown us how to treat others. We learn so much about our Heavenly Father through Jesus. When we trust in His direction, His will, His consistency, His presence, His kindness, His empathy, His love, we will be able to get through the tough times. Life is not going to be perfect in this world. The rulers of planet earth are not winsome. The politicians may be charming, but they don’t truly have our best interests in mind. Many people have lost their ability to smile, to laugh at themselves, to have fun. Confusion and dissension are all around us, but GOD is still in control. Trust in His complete love for you.

“The importance ‘That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith'”

That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

Ephesians 3:17

It is important that you remain rooted in God’s love. Remember that this is what your Christian life is based on in the first place. There is no life without God’s love. May you also ensure that your faith is always in Christ, so that He may continue to dwell with you. As you focus on Christ, you will continuously be blown over by how far, how wide, how deep, and how great God’s love is for you.

Prayer:

Dear God, I will always be in awe, and filled with joy, when I think of how great Your love for me, and anyone else in this world, is. It is because of Your love, O God, I know that everything will be alright. You truly are a Good, Good, Father. I will forever be grateful for You and Your love, O Lord. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
