God Rewards Perseverance

Hebrews 10:36 NLT, “You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.”

According to dictionary.com, the meaning of persevere is: “to persist in anything undertaken; maintain a purpose in spite of difficulty, obstacles, or discouragement; continue steadfastly.”

I saw a few definitions for persevere, however, I like this one a lot because it mentions being persistent, and maintaining our purpose, even in the midst of difficult challenges or any discouragement we may feel.

Rather we are going through trials or doing good things such as pursuing goals or helping people, remaining steadfast and staying the course does take perseverance. God will give us strength each day, so we can do what we need to. We can rely on Him for our our daily bread and the wisdom we need to make good decisions and take needed actions.

My word for 2024 is persevere. (Thanks Bridget for encouraging us to pray about a word). I am looking forward to experiencing the many ways that God will continue to be faithful in this new year. When we persevere in the will of God, God will give us what He has promised. May we continue to walk by faith as we persevere in our trust in God. His love never fails.

Before and After

POSTED ON JANUARY 13, 2024 BY BETH ANDREWS

Some time ago I ran across some old photos of myself. I laid them out in the progression of ages from about 3 to my high school years, watching myself grow taller, with a variety of hairstyles and some very strange fashion sense. I saw something else. Somewhere between 10 and 18, the girl in those photos took on a dark demeanor and I remembered my past – things that had been done to me, and things I did to myself. Glancing up into the mirror on my dresser, I thought about how much I physically looked like the girl in the pictures, but I no longer recognized those dark eyes. I heard a whisper in my heart, “That is because that’s not who you are anymore. Then you were a victim and a rebel. Now you are Mine.”

In Ephesians 5:8, Paul wrote, “You were once darkness . . .” Then he gives the contrast: “. . . but now you are light in the Lord.”  He was using words to paint a before and after portrait.

One of Satan’s favorite ploys is to assault us with our past, to tell us that we will always be who we were and there is no point in trying to resist those old familiar sins. “You know deep down, you still want it. You haven’t changed. You are bound to your past. You are bound to your sin.”

But if you belong to Jesus Christ, you are free from your past. You are a child of light, purified from all your sins (1 John 1: 7). Where you were once held captive to sin, you are now bound up in God’s love. You have the power to say no to sin.

In Philippians 3:13, Paul gave the secret to walking in our new identity: “One thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on…” We can forget what is behind us because “as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.”   (Ps 103:12)

Beloved, I want so much for you to understand that because Jesus Christ has completely removed all your transgressions; you are a new creation in Christ, no longer bound to a painful, sinful past or those dark desires. You have light in your eyes, and God’s love shines on your face. Because you are not who you once were. Now you are His.

Hearing God’s Voice & Knowing His Will

JANUARY 19, 2024BRM7

Bill Rudge

Every day we are faced with decisions. Some we must decide spontaneously, such as: What am I going to eat today? What should I wear? Do I stop for this yellow light or go through it to avoid sliding on wet pavement? Other decisions require more time to consider, such as: Where do I go to college? Which job offer should I accept? What house do I buy? These “life-determining” decisions are ones for which I earnestly depend on the Lord for direction – getting on my knees before the Lord so I can stand in confidence and assurance.

Several years ago, I lectured at a Bible college in California on the topic of hearing God’s voice and knowing His will. I shared biblical principles and personal illustrations of God’s leading, and the impossible circumstances He has enabled me to overcome throughout the years.

The Bible college professor, as well as the students, knew I was in the middle of an impossible situation at the time. Our ministry building sat unsold, yet I testified that the Lord had not only led me to sell it, but also to step out in faith that very month –– without any finances –– and begin construction of new facilities. The students and professor were encouraged by my testimony of faith and confidence that the Lord would meet the needs of this endeavor. However, because there was no human way this faith venture could be accomplished without the Lord’s miraculous intervention, the professor said he would wait to see how it turned out.

Almost two years later, I spoke at this Bible college again and shared many of the amazing things the Lord did in fulfilling what He had led me to do. The students and professor were greatly encouraged that, in spite of overwhelming obstacles, the Lord was faithful, and the end result was ultimate victory.

Tell Me God’s Will

I remember when I was a brand-new Christian, I went to Rev. Guy Bongiovanni, a man I greatly respected. I said, “You are so close to the Lord, He speaks to you so much. Would you pray and tell me what God wants me to do?” I wanted a quick, easy, convenient way to get God’s guidance. He said, “Bill, it is your responsibility to seek God’s will for your life. You had better learn right now to get into God’s Word and get on your knees to seek God’s will and know His voice.” Although I was at first disappointed, he taught me a very crucial biblical principle.

This Is Not Sorcery

In sorcery, practitioners attempt to manipulate the spirit world to do their bidding. By using the right rituals, formulas, incantations, or spells, the person attempts to change their circumstances and accomplish their purposes. So, too, many Christians attempt to coerce or force God to give them what they want. Others pray over a Bible and then whatever Scripture they happen to open to becomes their guidance. There are times God may speak to our hearts or confirm something through random searching of the Scriptures, but to use it as the Ouija board or tarot cards is extremely dangerous.

In contrast, a biblical Christian should submit to the Lord’s will through study of Scripture and prayer. God has a plan and purpose for our lives, so our desire should be for Him to fulfill it (Philippians 2:13, 1 Thessalonians 5:24, Romans 8:28).

Our current circumstances –– which we may want to change immediately –– could have a crucial purpose. What happens in me while I am waiting is sometimes more important than what I am waiting for. The waiting and seeking could be a time of refining and purifying; learning trust and perseverance. Therefore, as I seek His guidance, my prayer is that the Lord’s will and timing –– not mine –– prevails.

Be Led By His Spirit

Instead of determining what I want God’s will to be, then hoping He blesses my decision, I seek the Lord with all my heart through prayer, fasting, and reading Scripture. My desire is to be led by His Spirit; to be sensitive to hear, know, and obey His voice.

When I am certain of what He is leading me to do, I step out in faith and obedience, then persevere until He fulfills what He leads me to do. He has always been faithful –– often at the last minute. For instance, the Lord spoke to my heart to write 25 books (14 brand new books and 11 major rewrites) in two years (January 1, 2022 – December 31, 2023). It was 11:47 p.m. on New Year’s Eve when I finally completed this arduous endeavor.

I have received hundreds of requests from pastors and missionaries around the world wanting me to come and speak. They write or call saying, “We need you here to minister at a convention or pastors’ conference.” It is impossible to accept all of the requests, but when the Lord speaks to my heart to go, I obey.

Every day, I face dozens of decisions that must be made. It is obviously not realistic to seek the Lord intensely for each of these. I use wisdom and strive to live by biblical principles. James 1:5 says: “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” It is amazing how in various situations His Spirit brings a biblical passage or principle to mind or speaks to my heart what to do. There are also many decisions which do not have to be made immediately, and, due to their far-reaching implications, require special consideration. These I put on my prayer and fasting list and keep them there until the Lord gives clear direction.

There are also situations where a crucial decision must be made immediately. All I have time for is a brief prayer for guidance and help. I trust the Lord to help me make the right choice. I strive to base my decisions on such questions as: Is it consistent with biblical truth? Does it honor the Lord? Does it advance His Kingdom?

There are some situations so complex that all I can pray is: “Lord, You know the future and what is best. Please give me wisdom of what to do and line up the circumstances as You desire so that Your will prevails and Your name is glorified.”

How The Lord Leads Me

So, how does the Lord lead me? First, I make a prayer and fasting list of special concerns and ministry opportunities. Then, I consistently and persistently pray and seek the Lord’s guidance concerning where He wants me to go and what He wants me to do. All the while I am saturating my mind and heart with Scripture. I try to have Bible study and prayer three times a day which keeps my heart yielded and receptive to Him. I also have a time of prayer and fasting –– usually one day a week. Every January, I have a time of intense prayer and fasting as I seek the Lord’s will for the coming year.

Whether immediately or after weeks or months, the Lord speaks to my heart concerning various requests on my prayer list. Then, it becomes crystal clear what He wants me to do.

Countless times while reading Scripture, praying, waiting on the Lord, and meditating on His Word, issues I am dealing with and decisions I must make are resolved. I know in my heart this is what I am supposed to do.

Many times, I have sought the Lord concerning a certain decision I needed to make and have received no clear direction. During those times of silence, until He gives me assurance and peace concerning what He is leading me to do, I wait upon the Lord. Just as the Israelites stayed right where they were encamped until the Lord led them to move (Numbers 9:18), usually I stay right where I am until the Lord leads otherwise. This gives me opportunity to pray and ponder the options. However, when He stirs my heart, I am ready to step out and obey.

Circumstances Do Not Deter Me

People have often asked if maybe I should cancel an upcoming mission trip or Holy Land Adventure because of the potential dangers. I responded, “When the Lord leads me to do something, circumstances do not determine whether I change it or not. If circumstances determined my course, my ministry would have ended in its first year.”

As has been proven countless times on all my mission trips and in other faith ventures, God fulfilled what He led me to do. He did some awesome things because I sought His will –– not mine –– and obeyed it. He has honored, blessed, and protected in incredible ways because I have sought Him and His will with all my heart and desired to honor and glorify Him with every aspect of my life.

Once God leads me to do something, nothing and no one can stop me. I will persevere until it is accomplished. He has instilled within me the determination never to give up until what He has led me to do is completed.

Despite frequent and overwhelming obstacles that usually rise up after I step out in faith to obey, the Lord somehow makes a way where there is no way. He has always been faithful to fulfill what He has led me to do, and the end result has always been ultimate victory.

Twelve Most Important Principles

A summary of the principles I adhere to, while seeking His will, follow. They have been shared with many pastors, missionaries, chaplains, and Christian leaders, and are relevant for all believers:

  1. Saturate my heart and mind with His Word and prayer.
  2. Have a time of fasting.
  3. Seek His will, not mine –– I do not try to coerce or force Him to do what I want, but submit by being willing to do His will. God has a plan and purpose for you; so be certain that your plan is according to His purpose!
  4. Unless a decision must be made immediately, I wait upon the Lord to give clear direction by speaking to my heart or confirming it in some other way, before stepping out on a faith venture.
  5. Until He gives clear direction, I live by the principles in His Word and pray for wisdom.
  6. All decisions and guidance must be consistent with Scripture and truly glorify Him.
  7. Once I am certain of what He is leading me to do and I have His peace, I step out in faith and obedience. I share with others what He has led me to do and testify in advance that He will bring it about in His time and way.
  8. Attempt to maintain an attitude of faith and trust no matter what my circumstances. I continue to trust and honor Him, even when it seems hopeless, by strengthening myself in the Lord with His past faithfulness.
  9. I will not compromise my convictions to help my God-given goal to be fulfilled.
  10. I do not let circumstances deter me.
  11. Until what He has led me to do is fulfilled and His purpose is accomplished, I never give up but persevere in faith.
  12. Upon achieving ultimate victory, I testify of His faithfulness.

Put Me On Trial

The River Walk

by Aaron

Read: Exodus 13:17-15:18, Matthew 21:23-46, Psalm 26:1-12, Proverbs 6:16-19

Put me on trial, Lord, and cross-examine me.
Test my motives and my heart.

Psalms 26:2

RelateI remember reading Les Misérables where the main character was in court for his actions, and he was guilty. One thing I am certain of is that the main character did not want to be in court. He felt just like any guilty person would in that situation. However, David, a sinner like all of us, was asking the Lord to put him on trial. How close was David to the Lord? He was so close that he was not afraid for the Lord to put him on trial and examine his deeds.

ReactThere are some days when I get so busy with life that I feel desperate. I start to focus only on myself and try to finish all the work. It’s a time when I shift my focus from God to all things unrelated to Him. It feels like everything around me is falling apart; I don’t want the Lord to put me on trial for what I’ve done, let alone examine my heart and my motives.

However, that doesn’t need to be the case. We are sinners, and we are being saved by Jesus. Instead of focusing on ourselves, we could focus on God, so that our motives and our hearts are influenced by Jesus, not by our sinful nature. We need to spend time with the Lord. How can we be Christ-like if we don’t spend time with Him? How can we be like King David, who wants the Lord to examine him and test his motives, without spending time with the Lord?

Respond:

 Dear Lord,
You know each of us, and You see all of our motives, our innermost thoughts. Lord, I need Your help, I need You to change what my heart focuses on the most. Help me to focus on You. Forgive me for the sins I have committed. Strengthen my faith when it is weak, and give me hope amidst desperate situations. Help me to seek You more when I am troubled by the work that I have to finish, and when I am distracted by things that are happening around me. Help me to be more like You, let me be like King David, examine my thoughts, and my heart. In Jesus’ name, I pray,

Amen.

FORGIVENESS , GOD’S LOVE , SCRIPTURE WRITING PLANS , STUDY , THANKFULNESS

Abundant Mercy: Scripture Writing Plan February 2024

January 31, 2024Elihu

Have you ever been punished and knew you deserved it? How did you feel about your punishment? Were you resentful? Upset? Resigned?

On the flip side, have you deserved punishment and been spared? How did it feel? Were you relieved? Grateful? Or did you take it for granted?

How one receives both justice and mercy speaks volumes about conscience and character. If we resent true justice, there is a lack of intellectual honesty. Conversely, if we feel mercy is “owed” to us because we are “basically good,” we have a warped sense of reality.

Justice is what we deserve. Mercy is what we receive.

To come to God, one must first accept the truth: “all have sinned” and deserve His just punishment. You cannot receive God’s mercy unless you recognize that you need it in the first place. The longer you walk with God, the more you will realize how much you continue to rely on His mercy.

In this month’s plan, we will be considering the abundance of God’s mercy. While I have divided this into sections, you’ll likely notice there is an overlap in the concepts. As you write through these passages, consider the contrast between justice and mercy. When you arrive at the section, “What I should give,” think about how you can give mercy to people in your own sphere of influence. We should always aim to lead people to Jesus, but we cannot lead people to Jesus if we don’t live like Jesus.

“Cast ALL of your cares upon the Lord !!”

Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

1st Peter 5:7

It IS true this morning, WAS true YESTERDAY, and WILL be true tomorrow, that nobody has ever cared for you and I like Jesus cares for us. You see, we just aren’t capable of giving the kind of care that God gives to us.

We have plenty of people around us that need to be cared for. In fact, I can’t remember a time when I’ve had so many friends, relatives, and acquaintances who are sick. Our prayer list is long. And it is growing longer. Seems like when 2 friends get well, 4 more get sick. But we can be certain that God is never unaware when we are sick, hurting, or grieving. And everyone CARES. But no one cares like God cares.

This morning I thought about sick folks. I pray for them. I remember folks whom God healed as prayers were answered. And I was compelled to ask God to forgive me for not fully considering and appreciating His unending care and concern for us. Give thanks unto Him and bless His name. For the Lord is good, full of tender mercies and forgiveness. And He cares, more than you and I could ever care. We love you, Lord!

Know God

Agree with God, and be at peace.

Job 22:21

In order to properly “agree with God, and be at peace,” we must know Him as He has revealed Himself, not only in the unity of His essence and subsistence, but also in the plurality of His persons. God said, “Let us make man in our image”1—man must not be content until he knows something of the “us” from whom his being was derived.

Endeavor to know the Father. Approach Him in deep repentance, and confess that you are not worthy to be called His son; receive the kiss of His love; let the ring that is the token of His eternal faithfulness be on your finger; sit at His table and let your heart rejoice in His grace.

Then press forward and seek to know much of the Son of God who although He is the brightness of His Father’s glory humbled Himself and became man for our sakes. Know Him in the singular complexity of His nature: eternal God, and yet suffering, finite man; follow Him as He walks the waters with the tread of deity, and as He sits down at the well-tired in the weariness of humanity. Do not be satisfied unless you know much of Jesus Christ as your Friend, your Brother, your Husband, your all.

Do not forget the Holy Spirit. Endeavor to obtain a clear view of His nature and character, His attributes, and His works. Behold the Spirit of the Lord, who first of all moved upon chaos and brought forth order, who now visits the chaos of your soul and creates the order of holiness. Behold Him as the Lord and giver of spiritual life, the Illuminator, the Instructor, the Comforter, and the Sanctifier. Behold Him as He descends upon the head of Jesus, and then as He rests upon you.

Such an intelligent, scriptural, and experiential belief in the Trinity is yours if you truly know God; and such knowledge brings peace indeed.

Where Are Your Idols?

Reading: Psalm 115:1-8

Not to us, LORD, not to us
but to your name be the glory,
because of your love and faithfulness.
Why do the nations say,
“Where is their God?”
Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him.
But their idols are silver and gold,
made by human hands.
They have mouths, but cannot speak,
eyes, but cannot see.
They have ears, but cannot hear,
noses, but cannot smell.
They have hands, but cannot feel,
feet, but cannot walk,
nor can they utter a sound with their throats.
Those who make them will be like them,
and so will all who trust in them

Reflection
Where are your idols? “I have none,” you say. Are you sure? Most readers of this post would deny being idol worshippers, but perhaps we have more idols than we care to admit.

Idolatry was commonly practiced during Israel’s kingdom era. In Old Testament times, the nations around God’s people all practiced various forms of idol worship. One might assume God’s redeemed people, who were rescued from slavery, would have nothing to do with such vile practices. But you would be wrong. Time and again Israel fell into idolatry.

King Solomon, who was revered for his wisdom, is a prime example of someone who condoned idol worship. Here’s what we read about this ‘esteemed’ leader: On a hill east of Jerusalem, Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the detestable god of Moab, and for Molek the detestable god of the Ammonites. He did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and offered sacrifices to their gods (1 Kings 11:7-8).

When leaders go astray, there will be many who follow. In the church today we have many leaders who have fallen captive to the god of Mammon—material goods. Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money” (Matthew 6:24).

Before we claim to be free from idols, we need to examine our hearts. Are we yielding to the Holy Spirit, or are we controlled by our desire for what this world has to offer?

Response: Father God, show me if there are idols in my life. In love, correct me when I stray. I want to serve you—put you first in my life. Lord Jesus, be my master. It’s an honor to serve you. Amen.

Your Turn: What things have become idols in your life? What actions can you take to establish Jesus as your Lord?

This Sunday at Church: Pray for the completed Winter 2024 training of pastors would be used by God

January 28, 2024 by SLIMJIM

church scene

This Sunday at Church I want to encourage you to do the following: This Sunday at Church: Pray for the completed Winter 2024 training of pastors would be used by God.

Two weeks ago I posted “This Sunday at Church: Pray for my Winter 2024 training of pastors.”

Thank you all who have prayed for the last two weeks.  I admit that I’m exhausted from the trip.

I am now back from that trip to train pastors.

I thought it would be good to ask for prayers that God use what we taught.

These are poor men and guys with limited education.  Some are also tribal people and many are persecuted for their faith.

As a result of the training of the men will step up with preaching to help their pastor’s ministry.

Also, two men are going to start a church plant together.

Other pastors who are already doing the ministry have expressed they are equipped.

Pray that the things learned would be applied to preaching and teaching God’s Word, not just for a few weeks but for a lifetime.  But also pray that they improve in their teaching and studying skills, and that the lessons learned are just only the beginning!

Where Was God?

I suspect a lot of people wrestle with the problem of evil and why God allows bad things to happen? I think everyone has to find their own answers to those questions and those answers are going to be personal, tailor-made to each individual.

I can’t offer a pat answer from God or some kind of theological explanation that fits because God is not the one asking the question. He already knows what’s going on, we do not. So the question is actually all about us and not about Him at all.

For me, I learned that those questions are not so much about discovering the nature of God, but rather about discovering the nature of myself. I had huge abandonment issues stemming from childhood. The nature of God never changes, He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. I, however, have huge wounds, emotions, and traumas that influence my perception of who God is.

So one of the best ways to get answers to one’s questions about the problem of evil is to simply go ask Him. That sounds kind of silly but it’s very effective. Talk to God in prayer, tell Him how you feel, ask for Him to help you heal and discover the truth about yourself that is keeping you separate from Him. Sometimes it takes a while and lots of asking, discovering, and prayer. Somebody smart once said, “faith is an inside job.“

I really enjoy the revelation to be found in Psalm 22. As Jesus is dying on the cross He says,  My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

I had always thought that meant God had abandoned Him on the cross, and turned away from Him in His time of greatest need. I thought, well if

He’d do that to His own Son, I want no part of Him. Well, what if Jesus was not accusing God of turning away from Him at all, not lamenting about His own separation and suffering, but rather quoting prophecy? Psalm 22 contains those very same words. It’s a Psalm proclaiming victory, mission accomplished, not one declaring abandonment.

I had to change some of my deeply rooted perceptions and preconceived notions in order to understand better and to get to something that was more akin to the truth rather than just a trauma reaction. We tend to be hurt and angry, so we attack or withdrawal, accuse God in a retaliatory or vengeful way, rather than trying to listen and understand so as to gain some peace within ourselves.

So those are my thoughts on the first day of 2024. I really wish I could offer some more concrete answers for what can be a really painful subject. The thing is, “faith is an inside job” and you really need Jesus to help you sort it all out, personally.
