“Always put others ahead of yourself !!”

Philippians 2:3-4

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Paul discourages selfish ambition and he encourages humility instead. He describes it as valuing other people more than ourselves and placing their interests before our own. This is tough because our world encourages us to spend time with people who will make us look good and, hopefully, give us some advantages.

Humility is the exact opposite. Humility is about inviting people into our lives, and homes, who need a relationship with Jesus—no matter who they are, what they are wearing, where they come from, or who their network is. Instead of thinking about how a friendship might benefit you, think about how a friendship with Jesus can change someone’s life.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, forgive me for when I have selfishly placed myself above or before others, allowing pride to guide me. I repent and humbly ask You to help me change and be one who consistently puts Your need for others ahead of my own. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen and amen.

“Always use God’s plans”

There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.

Proverbs 19:21

It is natural for us, as human beings, to come up with plans, thoughts, and goals for the future. But we need to realize that God is the only One who truly knows what’s best for us. When you have plans you would like to make, or actions you need to take about a particular decision, make sure that you go to God first. God’s plans will always outlive any plan we come up with for ourselves.

Prayer:

Dear God, I commit all my plans, dreams, and aspirations into Your hands. These are only products of my thoughts; what I truly want is what you want for me because I know that that is what will truly be best for me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

“What is the Desire of Your Heart?” 1/14/2024 Written by Beth Andrews for “Deeper Roots”

What is the Desire of Your Heart?

POSTED ON JANUARY 12, 2024 BY BETH ANDREWS

“This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven . . .’” (Matthew 6:9)

Somewhere in my life, I got the message that God, being sovereign and all, was going to do what He was going to do without any commentary from me. He had a plan and it would be enacted. I had no say in the matter. He wanted no arguments or suggestions from me.

From that, prayer became a dry, rote practice. And from that, prayer became a moot point. I mean, what could I say that would make any difference at all? And “unanswered” prayers reinforced that warped theology.

Then I looked more deeply into the idea of prayer and I realized the point of prayer isn’t changing God’s mind or gaining His approval for my desires. It is about changing my heart and aligning my desires with God’s desires so that He can answer my prayers affirmatively. In a sense, I am still subject to God’s sovereignty, but through prayer, it is not begrudging God’s plan but rather submitting Joyfully to it. And that changes everything about prayer for me.

Consider this – we all love Psalm 37:4: “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” We claim that frequently for all sorts of desires. I took it to heart through seven years of infertility. If I delight in the Lord, He will give me a baby. And I wanted a baby so much that I forced myself to be “happy, happy, happy” in God. But that is not the point of this verse at all. Like me, we tend to misunderstand the first part of the verse in the rush to get to the second part.

But the heart of this verse is – well – your heart. It is not delighting yourself in the Lord to get what you want. It is delighting yourself in the Lord so that He is your heart’s desire. And He will give you what you want – Himself. God is not about giving you everything you want. He is about giving you everything He wants for you. His presence, His peace, His Joy, His righteousness, His glory, and His home.

If your heart longs for God, your prayers will reflect His heart which loves you beyond measure and has a “good, pleasing, and perfect will for you” (Rom 12:2). When God is the desire of your heart, Beloved, you will have your heart’s desire.

Daily Devotion: 2 Corinthians 4:8-10 – CROSSROADS MINISTRIES

Stepping Out in Faith

NOVEMBER 17, 2023BRM7

Bill Rudge

The Pattern

The pattern I see in Scripture is what I have repeatedly witnessed in my life and ministry. The Lord leads me to do something, or I spend time seeking Him until His leading is clear. Then I step out in faith and obedience, and most of the time just about everything imaginable goes wrong. The task seems impossible and defeat seems imminent. Then the Lord intervenes in His time and in His way. He is faithful to bring ultimate victory. He has done this countless times.

“Hard Pressed on Every Side, but Not Crushed”

The Apostle Paul was beaten, stoned, imprisoned and shipwrecked. He experienced hunger, thirst and cold; his life often in danger of death (2 Corinthians 11:23-33), but the results were victorious and his life was not taken until God’s purpose was fulfilled.

2 Corinthians 4:8-10:

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.

Psalm 44 is intriguing. It begins with the psalmist recounting God’s faithfulness and the victories He provided in the past:

We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us what You did in their days, in days long ago. With Your hand You drove out the nations and planted our fathers; You crushed the peoples and made our fathers flourish. It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, for You loved them. You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob. Through You we push back our enemies; through Your name we trample our foes. I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory; but You give us victory over our enemies, You put our adversaries to shame. In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise Your name forever (Psalm 44:1-8).

Then at verse 9 it completely changes. The psalmist is bewildered, because even though the people of God have not forsaken the Lord, it appears that God has abandoned them. Let’s read the rest of this Psalm:

But now You have rejected and humbled us; You no longer go out with our armies. You made us retreat before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered us. You gave us up to be devoured like sheep and have scattered us among the nations. You sold Your people for a pittance, gaining nothing from their sale.

You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us. You have made us a byword among the nations; the peoples shake their heads at us. My disgrace is before me all day long, and my face is covered with shame at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.

All this happened to us, though we had not forgotten You or been false to Your covenant. Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from Your path. But You crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals and covered us over with deep darkness.

If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, would not God have discovered it, since He knows the secrets of the heart? Yet for Your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.

Awake, O Lord! Why do You sleep? Rouse Yourself! Do not reject us forever. Why do You hide Your face and forget our misery and oppression? We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. Rise up and help us; redeem us because of Your unfailing love (Psalm 44:9-26).

Not Our Ways

Has God forgotten us? Of course not. He has a broader perspective and purpose than our immediate circumstance and limited view.

The Apostle Paul, contemplating the suffering and adversity of the early Church, asks some relevant questions in Romans 8:31, 35:

If God is for us, who can be against us? Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

In the context of the suffering believer, Paul continues in Romans 8:36 by quoting from Psalm 44:22:

As it is written: “For Your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

Yet, Paul goes on to say in Romans 8:37-39:

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Whether we are blessed or whether we suffer and face adversity, our faith in Christ enables us to be more than conquerors. In spite of frustration and the threat of defeat, we can be assured that God is faithfully working behind the scenes to fulfill His purpose.

After our car was totaled in that four-vehicle pile-up in Oregon, the Lord gave me Psalm 34:19 NAS:

Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but the Lord delivers him out of them all.

As David, in his old age, affirmed his oath to Bathsheba that Solomon their son would become king, he testified of God’s faithfulness by confirming his promise with these words:

As surely as the LORD lives, who has delivered me out of every trouble (1 Kings 1:29).

And 2 Timothy 3:10-12 affirms:

You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

“Do you KNOW the ONE who really cares ??”

Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

1st Peter 5:7

It IS true this morning, WAS true YESTERDAY, and WILL be true tomorrow, that nobody has ever cared for you and I like Jesus cares for us. You see, we just aren’t capable of giving the kind of care that God gives to us.

We have plenty of people around us that need to be cared for. In fact, I can’t remember a time when I’ve had so many friends, relatives, and acquaintances who are sick. Our prayer list is long. And it is growing longer. Seems like when 2 friends get well, 4 more get sick. But we can be certain that God is never unaware when we are sick, hurting, or grieving. And everyone CARES. But no one cares like God cares.

This morning I thought about sick folks. I pray for them. I remember folks whom God healed as prayers were answered. And I was compelled to ask God to forgive me for not fully considering and appreciating His unending care and concern for us. Give thanks unto Him and bless His name. For the Lord is good, full of tender mercies and forgiveness. And He cares, more than you and I could ever care. We love you, Lord!

The Call of Christian Faith

Come to me.

Matthew 11:28

The call of the Christian faith is the gentle word, “Come.” The Jewish law spoke harshly: “Go, pay attention to your steps as to the path in which you will walk. Break the commandments, and you will perish; keep them, and you will live.” The law was a dispensation of terror that drove men before it as with a scourge; the Gospel draws with cords of love. Jesus is the Good Shepherd going before His sheep, bidding them follow Him, and leading them forward with the sweet word, “Come.” The law repels; the Gospel attracts. The law shows the distance that exists between God and man; the Gospel bridges that awful chasm and brings the sinner across it.

From the first moment of your spiritual life, until you are welcomed into heaven, the language of Christ to you will be, “Come to me.” As a mother extends her hand to her tiny child and woos it to walk by saying, “Come,” even so does Jesus. He will always be ahead of you, bidding you follow Him as the soldier follows his captain. He will always go before you to pave your way and clear your path, and you will hear His life-giving voice calling you to follow Him all through your life; in the solemn hour of death, His sweet words with which He will usher you into the heavenly world will be, “Come, you who are blessed of my Father.”1

This is not only Christ’s call to you, but if you are a believer, this is your call to Christ—“Come! Come!” You will be longing for His return; you will be saying, “Come quickly; even so come, Lord Jesus.” You will desire nearer and closer fellowship with Him. As His voice to you is “Come,” your response to Him will be, “Come, Lord, and stay with me. Come and occupy the throne of my heart; reign there without a rival, and consecrate me entirely to Your service.”

Reading: Psalm 112

Praise the LORD.
Blessed are those who fear the LORD,
who find great delight in his commands.
Their children will be mighty in the land;
the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in their houses,
and their righteousness endures forever.
Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,
for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.
Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely,
who conduct their affairs with justice.
Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever.
They will have no fear of bad news;
their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the LORD.
Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;
in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.
They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor,
their righteousness endures forever;
their horn will be lifted high in honor.
The wicked will see and be vexed,
they will gnash their teeth and waste away;
the longings of the wicked will come to nothing

Reflection
Is there a blessing to be had for those who fear the LORD? Absolutely yes, according to Psalm 112! When we put the LORD first in our lives and honor Him in all we say and do, He takes note. Blessings come from the LORD. Those blessings can come in various forms.

The psalmist begins by speaking of the blessing that flows to our children. A home where the love of God reigns is blessed indeed. Children grow up in a secure environment with loving role models and that sets the stage for their advancement as adults in society. The psalmist asserts the generation of the upright will be blessed.

Are you finding great delight in the LORD’s commands? There are positive consequences for that. You may be blessed with wealth as a result. Fearing God brings a reward, but that reward must be used wisely in the service of God and others. Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice.

But this psalm does not promise us a trouble-free life. Though bad news may come, those who fear God will trust in Him and overcome adversity. Even in darkness light dawns for the upright. Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear; in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.

Response: Father God, I thank You for every blessing that comes from fearing You and living uprightly. When my way seems dark, shine Your light on me. Lead me forward in the way of Christ. Amen.

Your TurnIn what ways have you experienced God’s blessing? Which blessings do you value most?

It’s been three years today that Bill was promoted to his eternal home. I ran across this post about “Pressing On” that he wrote on January 1, 2020, and felt as we approach a new year, someone might need some encouragement to carry them over into 2024.

I visit Bill’s blogs often as it makes me feel close to him as I laugh at his humor and digest his wisdom. As I read each blog, I can’t help but think of all his “blogger friends”, because you became his second family. Being a prisoner in his body may have isolated him physically, but because of the technology and friends he made through his blog, he was a very sociable man. Thank you all for the love and encouragement that you gave Bill (and me) in your comments. They continue to bless and encourage me. Bill started a blog to encourage others in their suffering, but God knew Bill needed encouragement from you all to keep pressing on.

When Bill wrote this blog, it was a month before the Covid lockdown. He was so optimistic about the new year. He didn’t know that COVID would take away peoples’ jobs and even their lives. Nor did he know it would be the hardest year of suffering for him, ending in his death. Yet his goal in 2020 was to give others hope as we were all isolated. He stopped writing his book and just concentrated on encouraging others even though he was very ill. He loved people and wanted everyone to know the God that gave him hope. He kept pressing on.

On another note, Bill never wanted to diminish anyone’s suffering. Sometimes we tend to compare our pain and how we react to it. We think that we can’t have a bad day because someone else has a deeper suffering. We all have different levels of pain in this life and we process and feel it differently. There were so many days throughout our journey where we were hanging on by a thread. Don’t beat yourself up on those days that you are barely hanging on. Allow yourself to feel the pain that comes with your suffering, but don’t stay there. Ask God to give you the strength and grace you need for that day and keep pressing on. I can’t promise you will get the outcome that you want, but I can promise He will be there with you in your pain as He promised:

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.”
  –Psalms 23:4

God is My Refuge: January 2024 Scripture Writing Plan

Every so often, we get raging thunderstorms in Texas. Instead of a light sheet of rain, it’s as if someone decided to dump a river over a few square miles in 10 minutes. Wind and hail tear things to pieces. Lightning shoots across the sky. Thunder roars.

When such a storm strikes, you don’t want to be outside. Even in a car, it sounds like someone is trying to break your windows.

Even though such storms are brief, they can feel endless (just ask my dog). Even though I have experienced many storms, I always feel unsettled when they occur because I never know how damaging that particular one will be. Sometimes there is no damage at all, while at other times, an entire neighborhood requires home and car repairs. The trials we endure in life are a bit like these storms–overwhelming, dangerous, and potentially destructive.

Where do you go when life is overwhelming?

To whom do you take your deepest fears?

What do you do when your closest friends or family cannot or will not help you?

People will disappoint you; safety nets will fail you; But God will never leave you.

As we enter another new year, let’s take time to focus on the reliability of God in this unreliable world. This month, we will write through passages about God being our refuge. If you have a paper planner, you could add your favorite passages in the margin of each upcoming month to remind you to stay in the shelter of His refuge each day. I hope you will join us as we write down these scriptures this month. As usual, I try to reflect on each day’s passage on Facebook and Instagram (@elihuscorner). Let’s be intentional about choosing the Lord not only when we need help, but also in times of great joy. May he always be our refuge and dwelling place, as Moses wrote:

“There is no one like the God of Jeshurun,
who rides across the heavens to help you
and on the clouds in his majesty.
The eternal God is your refuge,
and underneath are the everlasting arms.

Deuteronomy 33.26-27, NIV
