Hebrews 13:5-6… Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 6 So we may boldly say: The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me? (NKJV)
God’s promise to never leave, nor forsake His children (1), is a promise God has made throughout the Bible… Some examples of this promise God has made, found in the Old Testament, include…Joshua 1:9…Deuteronomy 31:6…and the most appropriate scripture for today’s writing…Jeremiah 32:40… (2)
Jeremiah 32:40… And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from doing them good; but I will put My fear in their hearts so that they will not depart from Me. (NKJV)
My friends, if you are filled with the Holy Spirit by God’s grace, through saving faith alone in the Lord Jesus Christ (3)…when God’s presence in your life grows dim…and fear, despair, and/or darkness have crept into your life…it is not because God has abandoned you… It is because you have broken the sweet fellowship that a Spirit filled Christian will have with the Lord…Ephesians 5:18-20…
God wants to be the most important person in life of His children… God wants His children to trust Him for everything…with absolute faith that He is always present in their life…to guide and direct His redeemed children, as they obey the Holy Spirit that God has given to each of them…John 14:26…
But God also warns Christians, that when they disobey Him…there will be consequences for their actions…Hebrews 12:5-11… (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=heb12%3A5-11&version=NKJV;KJV)
Any time a Christian sins…their fellowship with the Lord will be interrupted, until any and all sins have been confessed with true repentance (4) and godly sorrow…as they turn back to the Lord to seek practical righteousness in God’s eyes…
1 John 1:9… If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (NKJV)
Any unconfessed sin (including taking back control from the Holy Spirit), will grieve the Holy Spirit…Ephesians 4:30… I am reminded of a sermon preached by the REV. C.H. Spurgeon, back in 1859… Anyone who hasn’t spent the time to read this excellent sermon (Read at least part III), should open the link (4) to one of REV. Spurgeon’s most important sermons, and read it…
REV. Spurgeon speaks of exactly what I am writing about today… He lays out in detail, what the Christian must do, when the Holy Spirit is grieved…and decides to let the Christian flounder in darkness and despair… They will remain in this state of separation from the Lord…until they realize their predicament, and turn back to the Lord…seeking to regain their sweet fellowship with Him…
I have recently written about the first 3 of the 9 fruit of the Spirit, given by God to every believer…Galatians 5:22-23… But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. (NKJV)
The Christian’s heart must be filled with the love of Christ (Ephesians 3:19), also called filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18-20)…before they can realize the fullness of joy that will exist, because of Christ’s joy which remains in them…John 15:11… It is this same fullness of Christ…fullness of God…or Walking in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16)…which will eliminate the fear, anxiety, or despair of the Christian who has taken their eyes off of the Lord…
Once the Christian tastes and sees that the Lord is good…and keeps this “fear in their hearts”…they will “not lack any good thing”… Friend, these aren’t my words…they are the words of David, who penned this, in…
Psalm 34:8-10… Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! 9 Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him. 10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger; But those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing. (NKJV)
Heavenly Father, I pray that Your living and powerful Word, will help Your children overcome their fears, anxiety, and despair… I pray Father, that any darkness with-in Your children, can be changed into the light of life…once they become followers (disciples) of Your Son Jesus Christ…John 8:12… I pray for this fullness of Christ to bring the light of life, and a peace which will surpass all understanding (Philippians 4:6-7) into all of our hearts and lives, in Jesus’ most precious name and for His sake…Amen…
Blessings in Christ, bruce r mills

Spurgeon’s sermon should be read by everyone that we would cherish our relationship with the Lord more and not grieve the Holy Spirit. How God loves us! \o/

Bruce,
This is a wonderful posting. I appreciate the differential between the Lord’s promise to leave us and the ability to hinder our relationship to the Lord by unconfessed sin. It is just as you say… the two are not mutually exclusive. Thanks also for the reference to Spurgeon’s sermon on the subject. I’ll be trying to find it later today.
Lord bless you my friend. Thanks again for your faithfulness and your service to Christ!
