Making Space For His Presence

I took this photo on a recent walk with some loved ones. It’s just a little kiss from heaven, some heart-shaped moss on a tree. I think it looks a bit like a puppy dog, too. I see a tail about to wag.
Does God make His presence known to us? He does indeed, but we have to make room and to receive Him.
There’s this idea when it comes to scammers, con artists, and those who prey on the vulnerable, called “false urgency.” I deal with false urgency a lot on account of the fact that my circle seems to contain a lot of people with ingrained anxiety disorders. So absolutely everything in life can easily become dire and urgent when you are already plagued by free-floating anxiety. So how do you recognize a scam, a deception? It is often wrapped in false urgency. False urgency generally signifies a lie. Send money NOW! You must contact us immediately! Respond by 5 pm or we’ll cancel your social security!
“False urgency” is vile bovine poo because it exploits people’s anxiety and creates fear, so you panic and are less inclined to think rationally. It is also the precise opposite of Godly, the opposite of how God operates. He is all about calm. The peace. “Be still and know that I am.”
I used to tell my family, and still do sometimes, that unless there are bones sticking out and blood flowing everywhere, it just isn’t “urgent and dire.” That’s some dark humor off the front lines, but it simply means that unless the house is actually on fire, you’d best not try to social engineer a response out of me.
The kids these days call it, “making space.” We’re accommodating people with all their various needs and dysfunctions, making space for them, and giving them room to stretch out and relax without too much judgment. (I say “not too much judgment” because it’s not like we are required to be so open-minded our brains done fell out.)
Sometimes we miss the opportunity to do the same for Jesus, to simply make space for Him. Sometimes we get too busy so we fail to notice all the little gifts He gives us like heart-shaped moss on a tree. We really do have to quiet ourselves, still our brains to hear Him, to receive Him, to make space for Him. I like to say, “His presence is the present, in the present.” That’s kind of a tongue twister, but it helps me remember to stop lamenting the past, to stop worrying about the future, and to simply step into the present moment and enjoy Jesus.
So that’s my Christmas wish this year, that people get to have more moments of stillness, more close encounters with Jesus where He makes His presence known to us.

Sue and I have been married for more than fifty years and we are still asked, “what do you have to talk about after all that time?” The truth is, we CAN talk about anything but we also enjoy just being still in each other’s presence. The Lord is so much like that and so few people understand it. Sister Gabrielle does. This is a great and important message! 👍💗🕊📖😇
